Pertinent Information 11/21/04 - Annie is finally negative for heartworm! Last spring we found out that Annie did indeed have heartworm. She survived the treatment, and we survived trying to keep her "quiet" for a few months-not an easy task. In the midst of all her treatment we unfortunate also found out that she has a liver condition, that has yet to be diagnosed. Her liver enzymes are off the charts, but besides having a small liver the vet isn't sure what is causing it. In the meantime we have taken her off all her anxiety medication, which wasn't truly calming her any way. I have to say Annie has certainly grown on us. She is very needy and still pees on the floor when left alone, but somehow she still has won us over. Even our other boxer, whom Annie insists on sleeping on top of, would be lost without her. Our thanks to Gary Berg and all of his help in getting Annie treated.
4/27/04 - Well it has been awhile since our last update, waiting
to see how Annie responded to some medication for her separation anxiety
and also to some more training. It seems a combination of some
medication and taking her out of the crate has helped. She and my
five year old boxer do not have run of the house when we are not home,
but they have a big laundry room that they stay in. My husband had
to build a special door because Annie was eating her way out and
escaping. It seems at least for now the chewing at the door has
stopped, but that may be because my husband coated the inside with
plexiglass-it's hard to believe, but she would have chewed thru it.
And it had to be a half door because she didn't like being closed
in-sounds crazy but it seems to have worked. The medication does
seem to have taken the edge off for Annie, but I think we may try
weaning her off it completely or trying another type of medication.
In the beginning Annie would go to the bathroom in her crate (a real
mess) and the vet related it to the anxiety, then we put her on the
medication, but she continued and still continues to pee on the floor a
lot. The vet has ruled out any other medical condition so we don't know
if she pees on the floor because she is still anxious and the medicine
is too weak or if the medicine makes her thirsty and she drinks too much
water and she just can't hold it. Everyone tells me to limit her
water which I have tried-although it is tough 10/3/03 - Well after almost three months I would love to report that Annie is adjusting as well as her twin brother, Bo, has to his new home, but she is still having major separation anxiety. She is so sweet and gentile and very obedient when we are around, but she can't handle being left alone- and in her crate, the problem is amplified ten-fold. We have tried gating her with our other boxer in a room, but they have literally eaten their way out. We are currently back to the crate and trying some medication to take the edge off. However-for the last two days she has managed to escape and eat all of the mail. We have had some very bad days, but we have fallen in love with her and we are determined to work through this with her. The good thing is that she and our other boxer are very attached to one another and are nearly inseparable. Sue has been a big help through all of this and gave me hope when there wasn't a whole lot to hope for. We are hopeful that each day will get better. We'll let you know. 8/4/03 - Well it has been just over a month since we adopted Darci (now known as Annie). She has turned out to be a great dog for my husband and me, and my other boxer, Harley, just loves her. I was worried how Harley would accept Annie, but they wrestle and play non-stop, and Harley is quite protective of her sister. We had some issues with the crate and separation anxiety, but we are working through them with the help of Sue. Annie is now in obedience classes and is a quick learner. I have plans for her to be a therapy dog and I don't think there will be a problem, everyone loves her and she is just so sweet and gentile. I have to thank Tina because Annie is such a great match for our family. 7/9/03 - I received the one week update on Darci today, she is doing great in her new home. She was frightened the first few days but mom says she is coming out of her shell quickly. As I was on the phone with her Darci ran by her with a sock in her mouth...gotta love those pups.
Mom is anxious to get her into training to be a therapy
dog and knows that Dar will be great at it.
Everyone who has met her so far just loves her and can
not believe how calm and well behaved she is. She follows her big sister
around the house and does what she does so training is going well so
far.
I expect to hear nothing but good reviews from Darci's
mom.
7/2/03 - Darci has been adopted. 6/27/03 - Darci is pending adoption. 6/15/03 - Well Darci has arrived at the Guardian Angel Boxer Haven to start her heartworm treatment. She will be going in this week for her first shot. While she is there the vet will check her over and confirm her age. I feel Little Miss Darci is much younger than 1 1/2 more like 7 months so we shall have her checked out. She is doing very well here and has settled right in. She is being kept in a room by herself and the other dogs just go in once and a while to say hello. If she remains quiet I will move her out into the living room so she can at least be with us. Please keep Miss Darci in your thoughts as she goes through her treatment. 6/13/03 - Hi...Darci here. A lot of excitement here for the first few days...I'm getting adjusted to my foster home. It's been raining and raining, so we don't get to go outside much, except to do our business. My brother and I just hang out in our room on the couch mostly. When Foster Mom goes out, she'll put us in our crate, and we don't cry anymore either. The last two nights, we've both got her up at about 3:30 AM to go out. We start crying, then bark, and out we go. Then back into our crate. We've both got a little diarrhea from the change in food, she thinks, so we have to go out a lot. We are housetrained so it hasn't been a problem. I get to eat a lot of rice. And we're getting some boiled chicken in it too. I went to the vet's and got my shots. And I am heartworm positive, so I'm beginning treatment this coming week. I'm going to have to be very, very quiet for two to three weeks. Very quiet. I'm going to be separated from my brother, Caesar, but Foster Mom says she'll stay with me and Caesar can be with the resident boy boxers. There's a lot of extra rooms here at the farm, so she doesn't think it will be a problem....Foster Mom is already taking me out on the leash so I get used to it when I come home from the Vets. I'm pretty good, I do get excited, but she's telling me no and to stay calm. It's working a little, but she'll work on me this weekend. Mostly, I just love to lie around with my brother. We aren't that excitable anyway. Only when she first gets us out of our crate in the morning. I'm going to be crated separately. I want to get better, so I can be spayed and go to my forever home with my brother, Caesar. We both still need some weight put on us. But Foster Mom says we do look better already....It will take some time. We both don't eat that much. We get fed about 4 times a day, little bit at a time. Not too much more to say, except that Foster Mom says we are adorable and really well behaved for little guys. 6/8/03 - Hi. It's Darci here...I arrived here last night along with my brother, Caesar. We got to run and play, which is a lot of fun. We both stay in the crate together, and I don't cry at all. I'm a little cutie who lets my brother get scolded, as he's the trouble maker of the two of us. I guess you can read his page too to get more info on what's been going on. We got to go out today and meet the resident boxers, Hunter and Bugsy, and we played with them too. I'm not as rambunctious as my brother, so I watch a lot. But do I love to run and play with him. I love my Foster Mom, and want to be in her lap all the time too. I'm small enough. Both my brother and I really need a lot of weight put on. We're really a little skinny. We got baths today and new collars, Mine is purple and Caesar's is blue. We got new toys too. We're in our crate now, together, curled up, for downtime. It's been a real busy day. I don't want to be separated from my brother. I love him so much and he loves me too. I know there is someone who would love to have two adorable little boxers to love. And boy, do we love to give it back. I'm sure with some training here at the Foster Home, we'll be perfect soon. I have to get spayed next week and up to date on shots, But soon after, and when we both gain some weight, we'll be ready to go to that special home. Please, Please, we want to stay together. |
