Pertinent Information 7/6/04 - Hi everyone, apparently my last update had vanished but
that's o.k. max has been with us for a year 8/5/03 - hi folks, all is great with our max. he is just a great dog with a real good soul. all he wants is attention ,kindness and love. don't we all. anyway max comes to work every day and has the attention of hundreds of fans each week. he even gets dog visitors from time to time. he and our female boxer are together 24/7. and wouldn't have it any other way. we consider our selves very lucky to have max in our family. peace, alan and elaine sherman 3/26/03 - Hi folks. well it has been over 3 months now and max feels as if we have always been part of our family. he and Hollie are together 24/7. He comes to work every day with us and every one loves him. last week he went to the ocean and had a great day. as a matter of fact every day is a great day for max. a new family that cares and loves him and no stress about his day to day concerns. ever pet should have as happy an ending as Max. I'm thinking this might be the last time I update max cause what else can you say. again we would like to thank bar and all there members than have made Max`s story come full circle. my wife and I will continue to be supporters of bar and we will gladly turn people on to this great organization...peace ,Alan and Elaine 2/18/03 - Our Max is doing great. He comes to work with us each day with his sister Hollie. WE are a retail music store so he gets visitors all day. He has great social skills with humans as well as all dogs. No issues at all. His sister Hollie and him are inseperable. They adore each other and spend most of the time together. This was our only reservation before adopting max. But two boxers are better then one. She has become more active and her playing with another boxer is so different they her play with us. 12/26/02 - Hello boxer folks. Max has been with us for almost two weeks and it feels like he has been a part of our family forever. He and my female boxer are inseperable, as if they were two halves of a coin. I highly recommend adoption to any family looking to love and be loved by such deserving dogs. The BAR group found us the perfect match. Thanks and Happy New Year. Alan 12/11/02 - We learned some new stuff about Max today. Max was an owner surrender into one of our favorite shelters, and I asked the director if she could call the owner and have him call me. Well, tonite his owner called me. Max is indeed 4 yrs old, and had been with the owner sine he was 4 months old. At the time they got Max, the owner had a son who was 3 1/2 yrs old, so Max grew up with young children. They also had a cat, and Max was fine with the cat. In fact, he says the cat was usually beating up on Max. Guess Max is happy that I don't have cats, huh? The owner recently separated from his wife, and was living with Max alone. He felt it was unfair for Max to be alone for such long hours, so he gave him up. I asked how Max played with his young son, and he told me he was wonderful with him, or his wife would have never let Max stay those 3 1/2 yrs they had him. A niece would also regularly come over, and Max was a very good boy to them all. So, I feel very good about this news. It kind of confirms what I thought about this boy....he is a doll. His swelling is going down a bit each day. He is gaining some weight, and looking and feeling very good. Hope your apps are in on this guy, cause in another week or soooo, he will be calling someplace "forever home". Will that be your home???? 12/9/02 - Well, it is 8:45pm, and I am hanging with my boy Max. Now, it is not out of total guilt that I am with him. Yes, it is a bit sad that Max has to have this cone collar on him when no one is with him, so he doesn't bother his incision area again. When I got home, I came down about 2 hrs ago, so off his collar came, and I can keep an eye on him. He is not bothering the site very much. The real reason i am down here is because i REALLY love this guy. Now, i don't usually get all mushy for my fosters. Yes, i do love them all, but I don't get mushy. Well, Max has gotten me a bit mushy. I look into those eyes, and I get mushy. He has the softest, sweetest eyes i have seen on a boxer. Not sad, just soft. I love looking into his eyes. (god, if someone other then a boxer person read this story, they might get concerned about me, ya think? :o))) This boy is a total love. His swelling has gone down a bit today. I am putting warm compresses on it in the morning and at nite, like the vet recommended. Max is so good, he is cooperating with me, and making it easy to do this. He is getting his antibiotics wrapped in turkey, and is taking it like a good boy. Max has not been with the other dogs much in the last 2 days, as we are trying to keep his activity level low. We want the healing to go well this time. His most favorite activity is getting his nose rubbed. He sneaks up on you, and pushes his nose into your had, and waits for you to rub it. When you do (yes, i give into him), he closes his eyes and drifts off to another place. He is in heaven when you do this to him. What a sweet boxer boy. He is definitely grateful for his place in Boxer Angels. The only better place to be will be in his new forever home. Are you ready to get lost in those eyes??? 12/8/02 - Time to update Max (a million). A lot has happened in 4 short days. Max got neutered on Thursday, which is the day we got about 6 inches of snow on Long Island. We dropped him off at 8am, and were told to pick him up by 12, as they did not know at that time how much snow we were gong to get. With a bunch of traffic because of the snow, i got back to Max by 1:30, and a usual 30 minute ride home took 2 hours. Max was kinda out of it, and slept most of the trip. We held of on the intros that day with the girls, as he really wasn't feeling up to it. On Friday, we took him to the vet for his fecal and heartworm tests. We will get the results of the fecal on Monday, and will have to wait until Friday for the heartworm results. We did introduce Max to the 2 girls on Friday, and he did very well. Miss alpha queen Shotzie (our 43 lbs boxer girl with A LOT of fire and vinegar, was totally fine with him, and Norma Jean, our little Sharpei, who has very little tolerance for foster guests, was tentative, but accepted him. He helped his cause by not trying to overpower her, whom some dogs do, to which she will react very negatively to. She didn't even have to growl at him, as he was inquisitive about this very funny, wrinkly looking girl, but didn't get to be too much for her. He handled himself very well. Unfortunately, Max's incision opened up Friday nite some time during the evening, so on Saturday we had to take him back to the vet, who had to redo the whole area, and we just got him back today after an overnite stay. Poor boy, he now has one of those cone collars which he needs to where for a little over a week, and he has antibiotics to take for 8 days because he has an infection, and he is also pretty swollen in his neuter area. All this hasn't slowed down his appetite. He is eating just fine, which is good, because i would like to see him gain abut 5-7 lbs. He also loves his squeaky toy, and is very cute, as he seems to be talking to it as he is making it squeak. He almost sounds like he is crying, but it is definitely talking to it while it squeaks. Max, so far, does not seem to be a big kisser. He gives little kisses, and his tail seems to be in the happy mode most of the time. He has not been too demanding so far, he does like to be pet, but does not demand playing with him very much. We will see how he does as he starts to feel better, which should be in a few days. So, continue to follow the progress of this very sweet, tall and handsome boy. 12/4/02 - Day 2 of Max's stay has been excellent. He ate a very nice breakfast of yogurt and dry food at 7am, did his business outside, played for about 1/2 hr, then back in his crate until 1pm. Let me not forget to mention that Max slept downstairs, by himself last nite in the crate, and he was perfect. No barking, no howling, just settled down and went to sleep. OK, back to today. Max did not spend much time out of the crate today, as foster daddy was out, and foster mommy goes slowly with the new foster dogs. She let Max out at 1pm to do his business outside, then when he came back in she said "crate", and with the encouragement of a biscuit, in he went, and settled down very quickly. He was crated while the other 4 legged residences were eating, right in front of him, and not a peep out of him. Very impressive. When I got home at 6pm, we ate, then I came down at 7pm to feed Max, by himself. He got 3 cups of dry, yogurt and some pasta on top. Well, his appetite is just wonderful, as he ate it all up. We then went for a looooog walk, just Maxy and me.....oooops, I mean Maxy and I :o)))) I was very pleased with tonites walk. He does not pull much on the leash, and with a few small corrections, that even improved. We had an encounter on our walk that I found pretty interesting. As we got to my corner, one of my neighbors was coming out of their house and he was walking with the use of a cane. I had not seen him with a cane before, so I asked him what happened. Well, he started walking toward me, and he was showing me that he was ok, that he could walk without the use of the can. He said he only uses it for assistance, once in a while. But what was interesting was as he was walking toward me, he was waving the cane back and forth, showing me he did not need it. Not really knowing Max that well, I became keenly aware that this could easily be viewed as a threatening gesture by Max, and I got ready to react incase Max did anything. Well, surprise.....Max was actually quite oblivious to the actions, and ignored it. Now, don't be confused, Max was very alert the whole time, he just did not view the waving of the cane, or my neighbor who was new to Max, as a threat. I was very pleased with this. When we got home, I let Max in the yard with my 2 boys, and they played for a bit, then back into the house. I did leave out a bit of Max's description last nite. He has a very attractive splash of white on the back of his neck also, behind his ears. He is also on the tall side. In fact, I was curious, since he is ducking a bit in his crate when he is in there, which is 25 1/2 inches high, so I checked Max, and he stand 27 inches behind his neck by his front shoulders. That is a nice size boy. He needs to put on about 5-7 lbs, so I will refer to him as a bit lanky right now. He also has the softest look about him. What I mean, is when you look at him straight on, his eyes have a soft, peaceful look about them. Not sad, but definitely peaceful. I am taking a real liking to him. He is most definitely housetrained, not one accident. We will introduce Max to the girls (who have been known not to be the nicest hostesses to our fosters) tomorrow. So tomorrow he is off for his neuter at 8am, as arranged by the shelter, we'll have him home Thursday nite, then to the vet on Saturday for his heartworm and fecal. Get those apps in on this boy, he is really a sweetheart. 12/03/02 - The Wings and Halo Haven has it's newest guest. Max (I am already calling him Max a MILLION) has arrived. One of my favorite shelters here on Long Island called tonight and asked if we wanted to get him tonight, so, off I went to the shelter, and just got back. Max is a 4 yr old owner surrender to the shelter. He is fawn, with white splashed on his chest, white boots on his front legs, and white toes on his back legs. He has natural ears and a docked tail. He is relaxing downstairs with me now, checking out some of the toys. He is starting to fall asleep, he is a very tired baby. Within 1/2 hr of arriving, he checked out just about every toy that we had down here. Squeaky toys, chewy toys, rawhide, balls, you name it, Max checked it out. When I was at the shelter this past weekend, we played fetch with Max. Let me tell you, this boy plays one heck of a game of fetch. You throw the ball, he gets it, brings it back, and when you say "drop it", he drops it right at your feet. He knows "sit", a little "paw", and I am working on down. We will do a full temperament test tomorrow, as we are going to let him relax for the rest of the night (it's 10PM now). |
