2/10/05 -Sorry
for the delay in my 6 month update. Time just flies! Mia continues to be
a great addition to our family. She's just over 50 lbs - still silky,
shiny and beautiful. She's become a couch potato at times and loves to
snooze on the couch or our bed. Just say the word though and she's quick
like a flash to get excited. She's become my jogging buddy. We jog about
5 miles a day. She never gets tired though - no matter how hard I'm
puffing up a hill! She is so sweet to our family. She's very hesitant of
strangers though - especially men. She runs away if someone new comes to
our house and it takes her a while to warm up. She's just afraid.
Although with kids, it takes her no time, she loves all kids no matter
who comes to the house. We took the winter off from obedience. I'm a
wimp in the snow. We'll start again in the spring. All in all, I think
she's a wonderful addition for us. The cat has even accepted her.
7/1/04 - Mia is the
sweetest boxer girl! She's all wiggles and kisses to everyone. Beautiful
as ever -
she's getting really big - I'll need to send in more pictures. Can't
believe she's been with us
only 3 months, she fits into our family like a glove. She broke the
front screen door
:( and she now uses it like a doggie door. The yard is completely fenced
with the invisible fence
so until we replace it she's comes and goes with us in and out. She's in
one of two places - the
back deck sunning herself or sitting on the front porch and watching the
bird feeders. Every once
in a while she'll run down and try to chase them and see if they have
anything good to eat. Never
do - only bird seed - yuk! She broke every ball that I got for her. I
finally gave her a jolly
ball I had brought for a horse. She loves it. She growls and chases it
and throws it around by the
handle - it's too funny! As far as Meg, Mia is very commical. Meg
doesn't like to be outside
(she wishes she was a cat instead of a pug). When I have the two dogs
outside, unless I carry Meg
down on the grass, she'll just stand on either the deck or the porch.
Mia runs up behind Meg and
touches her on the back - begging Meg to chase her. Meg takes a few
steps and then they tussle, Mia
jumps away and then the whole thing starts again. Mia is like the
obnoxious little sister who
just dotes on her older sibbling. Obedience training is going well. I
work with her every day and
we go to actual class on Wednesday nights. She's perfect when we are
home in the yard. When I
actually take her for a walk - then I need to constantly remind her to
heel. At class - she's pretty
good - but would prefer to play with the other dogs than work. She can
sit, down, stand, heel,
come forward, and stay. The instructor says that Boxers have those
bouncy legs and don't like to
stay - but she can hold it for 30 seconds already - or until motorcycles
go by then forget it! She
hates them.
We're taking her to the lake this weekend. It'll be her first time in
water with us so I'll let you know how
that goes!
5/4/04 - Well it's been a month! Mia is still being a good little
boxer girl. We went to the vet on Wed.
for her final series of shots. She gained 10 lbs so she now weighs in
at 39.5 lbs. Dr. Rummel said she
still needs to gain weight slightly, but he's not too concerned.
Mia has found her calling! She enjoys being an outfielder. Being Little
League season, my husband
(who coaches the team) and my son are always out front tossing the ball
or batting. Mia loves it. She
watches the ball very closely and when Jarod hits it, Mia is quick to go
get it. Too bad she can't join
the team, she's actually better at ground balls than some of the
players! She is very particular on the
ball too - not just any ball will do. Tennis balls - No! Fake rubber
base balls - No! Soft balls - No! It
has to be a real base ball with the red stitching - otherwise she sniffs
it and runs back and sits in front
of Chris with this disgusted look on her face - as if he could be
fooled! She wants to "Play Ball"!
She now sleeps with us and our bed is getting very crowded. We now have
Megan - our pug and Mia
sleeping with us. Both dogs are bed hogs. I think we're going to have to
get a king size bed!
Thanks to Tina for telling me about yogurt. Boy has that helped. I think
I'm going to buy stock in the
Breyers company. I know I'm going to keep my fridge well stocked.
All in all, Mia is a happy boxer girl who is quick to give kisses to
anyone who lets her. We sure do enjoy
having her in our lives.
4/24/04
- Just wanted to send an update on Mia. She is Miss Wonderful.
She is play, play play - and then crash - sleep. She's pretty funny,
very affectionate and loving. Megan is slowly starting to play with
her, although when Mia gets overly rambunctious then Meg tries to put her
in her place. Meg never succeeds though, being a pug its a little
hard to tell a boxer what to do. We are still limiting Mia to only
three rooms in the house, she is great as far as not going in the house in
those three rooms, but she will still go in the rest of the house.
All, in all, she's been doing great in that direction. She can now
make it up to 7 1/2 hours at night without whining that she needs to go.
We switched her dog food. We had her on Nutro puppy and she kept
vomiting. I talked to
the local feed store and they recommended Diamond Puppy food. She
keeps that down and has not vomited since we switched. She's still
very gassy though - I know it's a boxer thing, something I hid from the
rest of the family :-) We're going back to the vet for her final
checkup/vaccination on Wednesday. I'll mention that to make sure
nothing else is up. She has gained weight though, so it's probably
nothing. She was pretty skinny when I first got her.
I audited a class at the Albany Obedience Club a few weeks ago. I
really liked the way the class was taught, so I am signing Mia up for the
next session. That starts the 3rd week of May. I'm looking
forward to doing it with her. She is actually very good, she walks
beautifully on the leash and a slight tug and "heel" and she walks right
by my side. I don't even have to get the "it" in "sit" and she's
already sitting. I am starting to teach her that when I stop
walking, she needs to sit. She is really smart too. We just
installed an invisible fence. The first day, she was already
avoiding the flags. A few more days and she'll be running around the
yard free - something I'm sure she'll like. We've been hand walking
her for 2 miles a day, but I know that she would like to run, run, run!
All in all, Mia has been a great addition to the family. She loves
to nuzzle her face in yours and where ever you are sitting, she needs to
touch you while she's chewing her toys. The other night, I fell
asleep on the couch and when I woke up, Mia was curled up in my arms
snoring.
4/8/04
- Mia is a wonderful addition to our family. She has settled really
well in a short period of time. She's been really great on the house
breaking thing, only 1 accident in her crate the first work day.
I've been running home at lunch to let her out. The kids LOVE her.
I let her wake them in the morning. She is slowly being accepted by
our Pug and our cat, although Mia doesn't care, just
gives the boxer wiggle at them. She went to the vet yesterday and
was a perfect lady. Thanks BAR for placing her with us.
3/30/04 - This little
Girl has arrived at the Guardian Angel Boxer Haven for a very brief stay.
Being a young boxer baby she doesn't need prolonged evaluation and we
have many homes waiting for younger dogs. So she will be going to her new
home on Sunday so she is pending adoption.
