7/16/08 - We brought Jake home nearly a month ago now, and we couldn't be happier that we did!  He has truly become a member of the family. Jake has met many of out friends and family members...including other dogs in the family.  We are yet to find anyone that doesn't love Jake or someone Jake doesn't really like.  From day one he settled into the house with out any problems.  Since Jake has been around so many other dogs most of his life we do what we can to arrange play dates for him.  The weekend of July 4th my boyfriends parents came up with their dog (which is much smaller) and the two couldn't get enough of each other.  This past weekend we took Jake down to PA for a wedding and took Jake with us and we stayed at my parents.  My parents have a golden retriever that is roughly Jakes size and his age.  Although Charlie (my parents dog) was a little shy at first , by the end of the weekend got along great!
Over all Jake is basically perfect! Very loving, loves to play fetch, and loves walks.  Oh and he just had his first vet visit this week and he was by far the best behaved dog in the building.  The first dog I know who was excited about the vet.  He also passed with flying colors, and gave everyone many kisses!

6/22/08 - Jake should just about now be getting to his new home.  He greeted his new family members with lots of kisses, lap climbing and jumping.  They took it in stride.  I think Jake will be very happy and will get the loving he deserves.

6/19/08 - Jake is pending adoption!

4/17/08 - Jake is a  VERY sweet, loveable boxer.  He loves to give kisses.  Jakelikes to get up close & personal and give kisses.  If allowed he will put his paws on your lap and smother you with wonderful Boxer kisses.   He is friendly, quiet, easy to take care of.

Jake is very well behaved, listens well, and is eager to please.  He
knows the basic commands  and knows to shake hands.  Jake is happy to sleep
in or out of a crate, whichever you like.

He can be trusted in the house to not get into anything.    He does not need
to be supervised and watched all day.    Jake will whimper when he is
hungry.   He has a good appetite, he likes to chew on beef end bones.   Jake
is house broken but does not ask to go out.  He just goes out on a schedule
here.

Jake walks well on a leash,  he knows to sit when you stop on a walk.
Jake gets along with all the dogs. He rarely barks. Jake will run and box
while playing with the other dogs.  Jake likes to sunbathe outside.

Medically, Jake is doing great, he  does take a pepcid AC each morning.
He does have a grade 2 heart murmur, but it does not affect him at all.   He is active and plays right along w/ the other dogs.

A typical day for Jake in our foster home would be..He goes out for potty
in the a.m. and then  gets his pepcid AC pill,  breakfast is followed about
an hour later. Jake then goes out again about an hour after that before I go
to work.  He goes out when I come home from work, which could be about 5 or
so hours later, gets dinner, and will go out to potty again before bed.  He
gets a little cookie before I leave for work and before bed.       We walk
with the other dogs in the a.m. before breakfast...sometimes I don't have
time, so we will walk in the evening.

If you want a wonderful boxer that requires little, demands  nothing,
likes to be w/ his humans and will be a loyal companion, then Jake just may
be the dog for you.  If  you have another dog for him to play with that
would be a bonus for Jake.

Jake really is a sweet, friendly, easy going, affectionate, well
behaved.   We cannot say enough nice things about this amazing guy. Jake
is very easy and adapts quickly..he will adjust to any schedule you may have.

3/6/08 - Jake is still waiting for his forever home.  He is such a good boy and easy to take care of, that I am surprised he is still here.  There isn't much new to report.  Jake knows the routine here and is just hanging out.  He plays with the other dogs, chews on bones, sleeps in the crate at night, although it is not necessary.  If you want a sweet boy for a companion and for loving, ask about Jake.

2/6/08 - Jake has gotten a clean bill of health from the vet.  His 2 incision sites are completely healed. You can not even see that he had any surgery on his neck.  No additional treatments are needed for him.  The growths were removed completely and all is well.  Jake continues to be a sweet boy.  He greets everyone with excitement and kisses.  He loves everyone and is just a happy boy.  He will play with a ball, run around and play with the other dogs, and knows how to just lounge and relax too.  He really is an easy guy to have in the house and is just a loveable boy.  He will climb on your lap for loving, but if you have had enough or don't want him on your lap, a simple off takes care of that.  Oh, did I mention how handsome he is?  Well he has beautiful pure white markings...his nose, his chest, and his paws.  It is bright like new white snow, especially next to his brindle color.  And he has a beautiful coat of fur...yup, handsome he sure is!  So, you are probably wondering why I don't keep him myself.  Well I have thought about it, but I have 4 boxers of my own and the house is only so big...besides the village I live in would probably not allow 5 dogs as permanent pets in the home.  But Jake is definitely a keeper...one that is easy, loveable, handsome, obedient, fun, playful, friendly, quiet...what more do you need???

1/26/08 - Jake had good news on the pathology report he had on the growth on his face.  That was a benign growth.  He had his stitches removed.  The neck is healing well.  The incision on his face popped open so he is back on antibiotics for the week just for precaution to be sure it does not get infected as it heals.
Jake is such a good boy.  There really is nothing you have to do for him except feed him, pet him, and let him out to go potty.  He is content to just lie around the house or take a run in the yard.  He does seem to have acid reflux so he just gets one 20 mg. pepcid AC each morning and that is it.  Jake is such a sweet boy, well behaved, and gets along well with other dogs.  There was a cat roaming around the vet's office when we were there.  He was interested in it, but I told him no and he behaved.  Still don't think I would recommend him with cats though.  If you want a sweet, easy guy, Jake is for you.

1/10/08 - Jake had surgery this AM and was home this afternoon.  He looks so cute with his satellite/radar dish on (e-collar).  Everything went well and he should be as good as new in about 10 days when the stitches come out.  I do have to keep the other dogs from playing with him for now so the incisions don't open.  Jake was such a good boy at the vet.  He greeted other dogs there like long lost friends and everyone thought he was such a sweet boy.  Jake is a good boy, sweet and friendly, well behaved and smart.  If you are looking for those qualities, Jake is the one for you.

12/28/07 - Jake is playing with the other boxers here.  The snow has melted so I think he is now enjoying being outside a bit more.  Unfortunately, one of the little lumps on Jake has been diagnosed as another mast cell tumor and the other spot on his face is suspicious, so arrangements will be made for Jake to have surgery shortly.  Jake is a sweet boy.  Loves to climb on your lap with his front paws and give kisses.  He barks a bit when he is acting as a watch dog when the door bell rings.  I had some work done in the house 2 weeks ago and there was no problem with him meeting a stranger...unlike one of my females.
Jake is an easy boy to take care of.  He knows all his commands, does not get into anything, does not chew on things that are not his, gets along well with the 4 other boxers here, uses a crate with no problems, although he doesn't really need one and is just a good boy that just loves to be loved.

12/9/07 - Jake returned back to his original foster home Thursday night.  It was so funny how my girl, Flash, the one he is playing with in the pictures on the left, knew and remembered him.  She was so happy to see him she could hardly contain herself.  No introductions, no sniffing each other was necessary.  My boy Buster, upon seeing this, realized who Jake was and he too needed no introductions.  Jake then met the new member of the family, Ozzie who is young and rambunctious.  No problems there, Jake just takes him in stride.  So within minutes all 5 dogs were outside together and have been in the house together with no need for leashes, separations, etc.  Jake gets along with any dog.  I was greeted with the usual kisses and climbing on me and Jake took a run in the house like he remembered he had been here before.  Jake is going to the vet. on Thurs. to have a couple of little bumps checked out.  He had a grade 2 mast cell tumor removed from his leg in Oct. that was completely removed with no complications or further treatment needed for that.  Sweet Jake is back!!  This is one easy foster boy and we are all glad to see him and have him stay until he finds his real forever home this time.  I do not want to see him bounced around from house to house again.

9/25/07 - I'm sorry to write that we need to return Jake to BAR. He is a good dog, but I am expecting my first child and, unfortunately, he is not great with children. Other than that, he is very easy. I have a 4 year old boxer that we got as a puppy and she and Jake get along VERY well. He has had no issues with other dogs since we got him.
He walks well on a leash, knows the basic commands, was crate trained before we got him (we never really used a crate with him though) and is good with people. The only reason he is not good with kids is he licks constantly and tends to jump up on kids, knocking them over. He's about 60 lbs, so it's a lot of weight on a little body.
We think he would be best in a home with another dog - he makes a great companion, and no little children.  We will keep him at our home with us until BAR finds him a great new home.

4/16/07 - I just wanted to give you all an update on Jake. We brought him home last night (after a 6-hour car ride) and he was glad to get here! He has settled in really nicely in our home and with our 3-year old boxer, Rossi. Rossi and he played all morning, boxing, chasing and rolling around together. He has eaten wonderfully, but still won't take any doggie treats. I took the 2 of them for a walk today (despite the horrendous weather) and they did great!
He's done a little bit of crying here and there, but I'm guessing he misses his foster mom, and his brothers & sisters! We set up a comfy crate for him downstairs and also a new doggie bed in our bedroom and he chose to sleep in
our room on the doggie bed. He's so sweet and so good to Rossi - we are ecstatic! He's had a couple accidents in the house, which I'm sure is normal when a dog come into a new home. Here's some pictures of the 2 of them together. I'll keep you posted on how he's doing!
Thanks for running such a wonderful organization and making another family complete!

4/15/07 - Jake, my boy, went home with his new mommy and daddy today.  He has a boxer sister to play with.  He greeted his new parents with lots of kisses.  I and his playmates here miss him already.  Be happy, Jake.  Have a great life!!

4/13/07 - Jake is pending adoption
JAKE is our featured Boxer of the month.  His foster moms describes the perfect home for him below.
From Jake's foster mom -
Jake needs a home with another playful dog, as he does instigate play & loves to chase.  He would be fine in a home with just about anybody, but he does jump on new people he meets and likes to get on laps, so a young child would not be recommended.  Jake is not a watch dog, as he rarely barks.  He also needs a house without cats as Jake is a chaser/biter when playing.  Jake should be in a house with a fenced in yard as he is a chaser of any small animal that runs.  Although he listens well, he does not listen well when in the chase mode...(if you do not stop him first before he gets in that frame of mind.)
Jake does have a mild (grade 2) heart murmur which does not seem to slow him down all.  Since he came from a shelter we cannot be sure that he is 100% pure Boxer, but with his markings and docked tail he certainly looks to be.  His muzzle is a little thinner and longer than classic Boxers but we are seeing that more and more in the dogs coming into rescue even with AKC papers.  So if you think that Jake is the dog for you, please click HERE to submit an application.

2/11/07 - Jake continues to be a good boy here.  I have learned that Jake does not like the cold weather and is not that fond of snow either.  He has done little running around and playing outside since the snow arrived and the cold air.  He has actually been reluctant at times to go outside when the wind was quite intense and it really was freezing here.  Can't say I blame him!  But there have been no accidents in the house due to this weather...he is such a good boy!  He goes out, does his thing, and runs right back to the door to get inside even tho the the other dogs want to stay outside to play.   Jake does not like vegetables either.  I give the dogs carrots and green beans as a treat and a filler at times.  Jake is not interested in either one.  I don't remember him wanting to eat apples or banana either, when I offered those.  Guess he has gotten to love the dog cookies, so he is satisfied with that as his treat.  Jake still likes to climb on your lap for some loving and has taken to playing with Flash in the house now that it is cold outside.  Not much else is going on here.  Jake gets along well with my 4 BAR dogs, is on the same schedule with them for eating, sleeping, going outside, etc. and is a pleasure to have here.

12/9/06 - It is hard to believe that Jake is still with me.  He is such a good boy that I am surprised no one grabbed him up.  Oh well, your loss is my gain.
Jake continues to blend in well here.  He likes to run and play with the other dogs, he eats well, likes treats, is housebroken, likes the crate...but really doesn't need one, likes chewing on beef bones, likes to get on your lap to give kisses and hugs, doesn't destroy anything, does not get on counters or tables, walks well on a leash.  Actually, he's just about perfect.  He is quiet, rarely barks, and seems to be quite content.
I had indicated children for him 10 and above as he can jump on new people when greeting them and because he does like to get on your lap to give and get loving and sometimes needs a shove to get off when you have had enough.  Jake is also very much the chaser in play with the dogs, curious with squirrels and bunnies outside, hence the no cats indicated.
If you want an easy, quiet boy, who knows his commands, and is a breeze to take care of, Jake is the one.

11/2/06 - Nothing has really changed with Jake.   He is a sweet, friendly boy and behaves well.  He sleeps in the crate at night...actually he will go in by himself and wait for his cookie before bed.  He is housebroken, doesn't counter surf, rarely barks, eats almost 4 cups of food a day, walks good on a leash, knows his commands, and will wait for his food when told.  He likes to run and play with other dogs, but I have not been able to stop him from biting and grabbing the other dog's leg when he runs after them.  To avoid it, Flash has sat down and most of the time she will turn around and start boxing him instead of running.  Jake weighs a little over 66 lbs.  He is interested in squirrels and bunnies, so I would not recommend him with cats.  Jake doesn't seem to need much more than the basic care and attention.  He doesn't play a lot with toys, but he has learned to like chewing on beef bones and having another dog to entertain him.  Jake is a good boy and no problems to have in the home.

9/25/06 - Jake currently weighs in at 66.2 pounds.  Not much has been going on here with him.  He knows the
routine of the household and has just blended in with the rest of the dogs here.  He is on the same schedule with eating, going out, going to bed, etc.  I moved the dog beds that were downstairs to their room upstairs, so I have found Jake on the couch downstairs a few times since then.  Guess he likes to lay on a softer spot than the carpeted floor.  Jake rarely barks, sleeps in the crate with no problems, has come to like "cookies" and chewing on a bone, playing & running, and is good on a leash.  He will climb on your lap for cuddling and could be quite the kisser.

8/10/06 - It has been a while since I have updated Jake's page.  There have been workers here adding a room onto the house since I gave a room to all of the dogs.  Jake behaved well with them here, rarely barking at them.  However, I did get a report that one day I left him out in the yard as he was sunbathing.  One of the guys pet him thru the fence with no problem, but as soon as the worker put his finger on the latch to the gate, Jake starting barking at him.  Seems Jake is a bit of a watchdog afterall...Must be picking it up from Flash.  Jake still instigates with nipping at Flash for play, however he is grabbing her leg while she is running as he runs after her.  I am trying to stop that, as I do not want any injuries.  Buster just won't run with him because of it.  Jake goes in the crate with no problems, but he prefers to sleep on the dog beds.  I have found that he has taken himself downstairs to sleep on one of the dog beds down there.  He has also taken to chewing on the end bones now, and he does like some treats.  Barking dogs no longer bother him on walks and he has become quite the kisser.  He likes to climb in your lap, but he still is jumping upon greeting someone.  He went to my mother's house the other night and was right at home there.  He did climb on her lap & the licking started, but he behaved perfectly, laying on the kitchen floor, without begging, while we had dinner.  Jake is a sweet boy, easy to take care of, likes to play with other dogs, and will provide you with many kisses.

7/14/06 - I think Jake is in love with Flash.  He is constantly instigating play with her.  He barks and paws at her to get up and play and bites at her legs to get her going.  They run around and bite at each other till they tire out.  I got another prong collar and am now walking all 5 dogs at a time.  They do really well together and sometimes we do not get as far as I would like as people are stopping to pet them and talk.  There was a middle aged couple that actually turned their car around as they could not believe 5 boxers were sitting at the corner.  They pulled into a parking lot and
got out to pet them.  The man knelt down on the ground and Jake crawled on his lap with licks for him.  As previously stated, Jake can be a bit pushy about climbing and not only climbed on the man's lap, he was climbing up his chest too.  We were then stopped by some children and they pet them too.  Jake did do some jumping, so we are still working on that.  We were stopped again by 2 more children who were used to dogs jumping on them, as Jake did it again, but it is all in friendly gesture.  Jake is still persistent in barking when he wants more food at 9-10PM.  I cannot
understand why he is hungry again at that hour, as he is getting 4 cups of food a day, where my other dogs are only getting 3 cups a day, but so far he is not getting too fat and he does eat another cup of food at that hour.  He is picky as to which treats he will eat.  Jake is not that much into toys...he will run after a toy, but that is about it.  Jake just seems to like to play with another dog, so another dog is a must for him to live with.

6/27/06 - Jake's weight has filled in nicely.  Now he has to be careful not to get too fat!  I am trying to get him to eat 2 meals a day rather than demanding food throughout the day.  He can be quite persistent with his talking and barking for food which is about the only time I hear from him.  But he is slowly learning to finish his food at mealtime so he won't desire food 2-3 hours later.  Jake has played a few times with my dogs and he has done some running with them in the yard.  He is starting to maybe get interested in toys, although it only lasts for a few seconds.  He will run for a
toy with fetch, but has not learned to bring it back yet.  He will climb on my lap to give kisses.  He actually can become quite pushy about it, climbing all the way to my neck, and he likes to give Lilly, one of the dogs, kisses too.  As you can see in one of the pictures, he is sitting with 3 of the other dogs waiting to go for a walk.  He has become better at ignoring barking dogs that we pass by.
Jake has gotten more comfortable in a crate, although he really does not need one.  I actually found him taking himself into the crate for a nap.  Jake behaved excellent when Max had seizures yesterday, unlike the 2 girls who always go nuts at him & bark when it happens.  Jake just laid down nearby and watched Max with a look on his face like what is wrong with him?  Thank goodness, it is hard enough to get 2 dogs out of the way.  Jake is such a pleasure, that even though he is dog # 5 here, he can stay here as long as is needed.

6/7/06 - Jake is gaining the weight he needed. I don't know how much he has gained but I have loosened his collar, his ribs are gone & so are his hip bones.  You can only see a little of his back bones now.  Jake has started running around with my other dogs in the yard and the quiet dog has now become quite vocal.  He talks to me and barks at me when he is hungry.  He likes to eat many little meals unlike my other dogs that eat twice a day.  So, Jake has been getting 3 meals a day, however, he lets me know in between those 3 meals when he wants more.  It is hard to tell how much he is eating because he rarely finishes the meal at one time, but he is getting at least 4 cups of dry food a day.
Since my feet were killing me walking 2 dogs at a time, which required 3 walks at a time for me, I am now walking 4 dogs together.  I use the prong collar for walking and of course have received numerous comments & stares from people who cannot believe that 4 dogs are walking & sitting at corners so well together.  Actually, some people's reactions are quite comical.  Jake does need reminders at times, & he still is distracted with people, but he is getting better with barking dogs.
Jake snores!  He has also become quite the kisser, but the tail does not wag.  It vibrates a little.  Jake is a good dog and doesn't require anything more than the basic needs and loving.  He knows sit, stay, shake with both paws, down, come, and waits for his food.  He just needs a little more work on his distractions with walks and his jumping on people.  I will be playing fetch with the dogs next week.  It was too hot, and now it has been too rainy.  I will see how Jake does.  From the little we did last week, he will chase the toy, but has no clue about picking it up & bringing it back.  Perhaps we will be able to teach him.

6/1/06 - Jake is a quiet boy. Still have not heard a bark out of him. He is starting to be a bit independent now, as there have been a few times that he has not followed me around the house. He greeted me today when I came home from work with a lot of jumping on me...that was a first. I do not think that Jake is able to wag his tail. It feels like it may have been broken at one time and I took notice when he was jumping & greeting me that his tail does not wag.
Jake reluctantly goes in the crate and is quiet in there. I have noticed at times that he is not asleep all night in there. I really don't think he needs a crate, but he has peed a few times in the house. For the most part, he is housebroken. He gets along with the other dogs, but he has not played with them yet. He still has no interest in dog snacks, but does like people food.
He has slept on a dog bed and has not tried to get on the furniture yet. I am waiting for him to pick that up from the other dogs that are always in my recliner or on the couch even though there are dog beds all over. The weather has been in the 90's the last few days & very humid. When the weather breaks, I thought I would take Jake on a walk to the children's day care in the village. The children there have pet my other dogs, so I thought I could see how Jake does with children, if possible. He does jump on people, so perhaps a toddler would not be a good idea for Jake to live with, as he could knock them over. Jake has not attempted to counter or table surf. He is an easy foster dog to have around.

5/26/06 -  Jake has been with all 4 of my dogs with no problems.  He hasn't played with them or toys yet...not sure if he knows how.  He is easily distracted on walks when encountering other people, and really dislikes dogs we pass by that are growling & out of control.
Jake has only had a couple of accidents in the house, but likes to mark everything outside.  He & Buster are competing with each other in that activity.  Jake does jump on people when greeting them, but he is friendly.  It took 24 hours for me to get a kiss from him, but I have not seen him wag his tail yet.  I am wondering if he can wag it.

5/21/06 - Jake has been eating well.  He is a quiet boy.  I have heard crying from him in the crate, but no barking from him.  The coughing from the kennel cough seems to be a bit better.  It has been raining here all weekend, so he has not spent much time in the yard.  I did let him meet my 4 dogs.  Max knocked over the gate, so he greeted Jake when I came back from a walk with Jake.  They just smelled each other and all was fine.  I took Jake on a walk with Flash.  They were fine together until Jake put his paws on her back.  That is not acceptable for me or any of my dogs.  A quick leash correction for Jake, and the walk went fine.  I walked him with Max too.  They walked 2 miles just fine together.  When the walk was over, Jake put a paw on Max's back.  I corrected him again.  He met Buster and Lily thru the gate.  They were all fine with each other.  I will walk him more with the dogs before I let him loose in the yard with them till he learns no paws/mounting any of the dogs.  None of my dogs like it, and that is what usually escalates into a fight between them, if not stopped immediately.
Jake walks pretty good on the leash.  He does need reminders and is easily distracted with people and barking dogs, but he has not barked back.
Jake needs a little coaxing to go into the crate.  He cries a few minutes, but then is quiet in there.  He has had no interest in toys, treats, or a beef end bone to chew on yet, but he does like to follow me around the house.  He is skinny and could probably use 25 lbs. or so on him.  He is going to the vet. on Tues. for his overall wellness visit.

5/19/06 - Jake has arrived and he is, so far, a quiet boy, skinny, and has kennel cough.  The shelter provided pills for him, and of course, I will wait with introducing him to my 4.  He slept most of the way in the car, & walks pretty good on a leash.  He will look really handsome with more meat on his bones.

From our transport volunteer Jack - I picked up a new little boy at the shelter in Manhattan who is as sweet as can be. Sat in the seat next to me the entire trip and laid his head on my lap. Also picked up sweet little Gladys in New Jersey who went straight to the back seat of the car and laid down the entire 2 1/2 hour trip. Met Ruth and her husband in Roscoe, NY right on schedule. They both will make wonderful companions to anyone that can shower them with love and affection. They both can use a little more meat on their bones. Good luck sweet babies - will be thinking about you and will follow your journey on the website.
