Paul and I have had Chloe for a good 2 + years now. Initially
it was an adjustment for her and us. She didnt like other dogs and we
already had a Jack Russell Terrier (JRT) female puppy. However 2 weeks
after we picked Chloe up, and 2 weeks after closely supervising any
doggy introductions, lots of stess and panicking something finally
clicked and now the JRT and Chloe are BFFs! Chloe lets the little JRT
take all her toys and its definitely clear the 20lb dog bosses the 65+lb
boxer around. We cannot imagine life without Chloe - she is our baby
now. We take her for long car rides and trips to the beach or the woods
and she is as happy as can be! Her temperment is in line with what one
can expect from a boxer - she just wants to play all the time and loves
to cuddle! Thank you
Boxer Angels Rescue for all the wonderful work you do!!
1/28/06 - Chloe has been adopted
Chloe
just left with her new Mom and Dad, along with her new sister, Booster.
Took her a little while to warm up to them, but was just fine by the
time they left. She went willingly in the car and did quite well getting
used to the seatbelt harness. The intros with Booster (JRT pup) did not
go as well as I had hoped. With this already in mind, we
had pre-arranged for them to stop by Kim's on their way home. I really
hope that Kim can work her "magic". It took time for her to let her
guard down here as well, so I am waiting anxiously to hear how things
went. They are a very committed couple and we want the best outcome for
everyone!!

Chloe is pending adoption
1/18/06 - Just a quick
update on Chloe. She is doing soooooooooo much better with the cat.
Thanks to Kim,
our new foster mentor, and her guidance! Also is getting used to the
neighborhood activity outside the living room window. What a smart girl!
She is responding so well. I'm really proud of her.
1/13/06 - Chloe's
personality continues to emerge on a daily basis. If she wasn't already
named when I got her, I would have changed it to "Blossom"! What a
wonderful little girl she is turning out to be! I can't say it enough
how she has come out of her shell. She is the HAPPIEST girl!!! She's so
funny, with her turned up nose and her double-jointed "happy
dance"...I've never seen anything quite like her performances!
She's bent in half and doing this circle dance on her compact and petite
feet, which are attached to legs that are loaded with springs, just
trying not to jump up! She's so good. Can you imagine all that happiness
energy being contained??!!! I'm so proud of her.
She's become a very good watch dog. If she sees the neighbors across the
street from the window, she alerts me. I go in and tell her "what a good
job!" and she settles back down. I, personally, as a single woman, want
a dog that will alert me, especially since one of my dogs is deaf. My
hearing dog, Spanky, will alert and JD will follow suit if he sees
Spanky. What's funny is that Chloe barks at stuff that Spanky and JD are
used to. She makes her presence known at times "they" know are wasted
energy and give her a look and then give me a look, like "what's up?
She's at it again"!! Come help, Mom...we're snoozing!!
They all continue to get along well. I've observed her with a marrow
bone and cow hoof with them sniffing around...no aggression. Getting
better with the food preparation as well...we are taking baby steps.
She still remains very curious about the cat and we will work on this
with the help of our foster mentor.
Our "Chlo-Chlo" is so wonderful in every other regard. Everyday is a new
experience for a young dog. Exposure and socialization plays a big part.
I do feel she would be best suited to a forever home that has experience
with the breed. Are you the one? Get your applications in on this
girl...I've never met a baby to make such a dramatic turnaround. She
truly has a grateful soul and deserves a loving forever home where her
"Bud" may "Blossom" completely!!!

I wrote such a nice long
update the other night, but lost it somehow when I went to submit it. I
think my server went down. I have so much to report on Chloe. I hope I
can remember everything!
Chloe is now fully integrated into the household. We took it VERY slow
as we were told she did not get along with other dogs which I found hard
to believe for such a young puppy. Now all 3 of them can be in the yard
together. She's even sleeping upstairs with us. We did have two
scuffles. One was over by the time I got downstairs. It was between
Chloe and JD...I believe it was over a toy. The second one was with JD
again, but Spanky joined in. It was pretty scary, but ended quickly. No
blood drawn and then they all went about their business like nothing
happened. She is a dominant female, but Spanky put her on her back, so I
think she has learned the pecking order. She listens very well to
me, but does not always come when called. I think I've figured out
why...she's busy digging! JD digs too and always comes up with something
and so does she!! I haven't been able to catch her in the act yet.
I still feed her separately. She's shown some posturing if they all
follow me to get her food and dish. I'm not rocking that boat!
Absolutely no aggression if I go near her when she is eating, or take a
bone from her mouth or a toy. By the way, the boogies are finally
gone!!!!!!!!! As of 3 days ago. I've never seen a cold last so long.
Thankfully, my boys didn't catch it. She took all her pills very easily.
She loves her walks and is very good on a leash for a puppy. She has
started to protect the house. If she hears someone at the door, she will
bark. She was just wonderful with my 6 family members visiting over the
holidays. My sister wanted to take her back to Texas with
her...rattlesnakes? I don't think so!!!
She still is very curious about the cat, and would chase her given the
opportunity. But if I pick up the cat and walk towards her, she runs the
other way.
Chloe has turned into a very loving and happy little girl. She loves to
cuddle and get hugs. She has gained some weight and lost the boney
edges. I want to bath her, now that she is feeling better, but will wait
a while longer to make sure that nasty cold is gone for good.
I still need to test her with children. The previous owners said she was
good. She did fine with my 13 year old nephew, but did bark at my
friend's 10 year old daughter, so we'll see. I think that's all for now.
Almost forgot...even though she has free roam, I do crate her when I
leave. She still has some puppy nonsense going on. She loves her crate
and goes in on her own for naps.

Happy New Year from
all of us at Boxers by the Bay foster home, including the senior poodle
I'm pet sitting. Dec.18th was my first anniversary volunteering for BAR.
I can't believe that 7 seven wonderful Boxers have come into my life
during that time. So gratifying when the perfect match is made!
Now on the news about our Chlo-Chlo. She has made great strides these
past few weeks. I had six family members here for the Holidays and she
did great!!! She's warming up to strangers much quicker. By the end of
the second day of everyone's arrival, she greeted everyone with a tail
that wagged as fast as a hummingbird's wings, full of Boxer wiggles and
bounces. Just can't contain herself, so much so, she hit heads with my
Mother that she saw stars and a big bruised goose-egg to go along with
it! I think it hurt Chloe too, cause she went right into her crate and
laid down. We need to do a lot more work on the jumping, however, she is
starting to respect the squirt bottle, but it never seems to be near by
when you need it!!
We started socializing the dogs by walking them together. It worked out
great. She loves walking, but does best when she is following. When she
was in the lead, she kept stopping to turn and see where the others
were. I felt comfortable enough to put her and JD in the back yard
together. They played like mad! She did display some dominant behavior,
but no fighting. When I saw JD had enough of her, I let them in
together. I will try she and Spanky together this weekend. We've also
had her in the living room on a leash...boy was she happy to be with all
of us, but JD lifted his lip at her. I kept her close to me and she
enjoyed the hugs. The boys eventually laid down by the fire. I'm going
to move her crate back into the living room now that my family has left.
There is too much activity at the entrance to my sewing room which is
where her crate is now. It may help to integrate her with the others.
We'll see how it goes.
She's eating very well and has put on 4 lbs. and looks wonderful. Her
coat is beautiful. We are having a tough time getting rid of this cold
she has. The vet wants her on another week of meds. I hope this will do
the trick, her boogies are from "here to high heaven"!!! Snot rags are
placed strategically!! Her health check went just fine, other than the
cold. She has no fever or cough and her lungs are clear. Her spay healed
up nicely and the stitches were removed.
She has really emerged from her shell. She was such a scared, untrusting
little girl when I picked her up at the shelter. She's sooo sweet and
has the prettiest face with her dark expressions, one just can't help
but fall in love with her. I will continue to work on her socialization
with the other dogs. Still very curious about the cat, but not overly
so. She may be too bouncy at this stage for children under 5. She does
respond very well to verbal correction. She really does want to please.
That's it for now. My updates will be more frequent now that the
holidays are over.

Good news for
Chloe, her fecal and heartworm test were negative. Keeping an eye on a
small lump in her incision. It seems to be going down. She goes next
Friday to have her stitches removed, so we'll make sure everything is
okay.
She's really starting to eat much better, so she should start to put on
those extra pounds that she needs. She's got a really bad cold right
now, probably from being in the shelter, but doesn't have the cough
(yet?) Acting kind of sleepy. She loves her crate and goes in on her own
all the time. Before she got her cold, she was really starting to show
her playful side. I take it back about what I said about her jumping and
being light as a feather...she was so excited and full of herself, she
really clocked me one in the face! Ouch! I didn't care, I was so happy
to see her act like a puppy. But we are surely working on that. I'm
going very slow with the training. She acts as though she was put
through the wringer with heavy handed discipline. She's very cautious
around people she doesn't know at first. The only exception was the vet
tech. She was all love and kisses and wiggles as though she'd known him
forever. Can't get a good read on her. She needs a lot of reassurance,
praise, praise, praise and of course tons of love. She's such a sweet
and grateful girl. She might do best in a home where she is the only
dog. She certainly deserves to be showered with undivided attention.
Forgot to mention that she has not been destructive at all. Doesn't
quite know what to do with squeaky toys and saves her bones for later!!
12/11/05 -
Welcome Chloe, BAR's
newest foster girl. I picked her up from the local shelter as an owner
surrender. She's soooo skinny, it's hard to believe that she wasn't a
stray she's so thin. She was so scared and shaking, but did go
willingly in the car, with a boost up. She rode very well, but was
nervous to get out and hesitant to come in the house. She does
great in the crate, but I notice she whines a little, now that she is
feeling more secure here. What a difference a few hours made. She's
really come out of her shell. I can tell she trusts me already. Turning
into a real momma's girl. She's been so sweet. Loves being hugged
and petted. She does jump up, but is such a whisp of a girl, she
doesn't bowl you over! But we will be working on stopping that.
She's just so happy to be with you she can't help herself. She
does respond fairly well to verbal corrections. I think she would
be a very quick learner.
The previous owners said she was great with kids, but they gave her up
because she was aggressive to the other dog in the household. I'm going
to take it very slow as far as introductions with Spanky and JD. My top
dog, Harley passed away 3 weeks ago and the new pack order has not been
firmly established yet. They are not sure who wants the top dog job. So
for now, introductions are thru the gate. Chloe has growled at them, but
her tail has been wagging. I have heard, (don't know if it's true) that
a wagging tail with growling does not always mean they are happy and
"just kidding".
My mother arrives on Thurs. for the holidays, so I will have some help.
By then, I think we'll be able to take Chloe and JD for a walk. That's
always helped with an intro. Too busy sniffing to pay too much attention
to each other!! Great news just happened! Her crate is in the
sewing room which where the computer is. She's been roaming around and
coming over for some cuddles while I've been writing this. She just went
in her crate on her own!! Love it!! She views it as a positive place.
She's all curled up snug as a bug!
She did great on her walk...actually stuck very close to me. I think
she's a grazer when it comes to eating. Fed her at 8:00 and she just now
finished it, 3 hours later. I'm going to keep her bowl full, so she
always has enough. She needs the lbs. We'll be going to the vet for
fecal and heartworm check and get her weighed. Check back in a few days
for more information on this very special girl. Hopefully I'll have some
pictures for the next update!
