Four Boxers taking a nice afternoon nap in the sun!

1/15/06 - Well, our little girl went home this morning.  I don't think I realized how attached I had gotten until last night when she was climbing up onto the couch and I started to miss her already!  Ed & Jennifer are great and I think she's going to a wonderful home.  They brought her a new toy, and a basket of goodies for our dogs and a snowflake charm for Maeve since she and Snowflake share a birthday.  We couldn't ask for better people to be adopting her and I know she'll have a great life!  We'll miss her antics around here though and the other dogs will have to adjust to a much quieter household!

1/12/06 - Snowflake is pending adoption

1/10/06 - Miss Snowflake - puppy extraordinaire - traveled to see the vet last night with Delilah.  I was concerned about a patch or two of skin that seemed to have some thinning hair and, sure enough, she's got demodectic mange.  This is pretty common in puppies and is mostly due to stress.  Their immune systems get worn down and these little mites, that are usually kept in check by the immune system start to take over!  No worries though, its not contagious and we have some goop to put on her for 2 or 3 weeks that should clear it up beautifully.  Meanwhile she goes on her merry way - she's 26 pounds and had no problem with starting a wrestling match with the 9 month old (and much much
bigger) boxer we met in the waiting room at the vet.  The techs and the doctor loved her and told me what a calm pup she was. . .HA!  Little do they know!

1/3/06 - Miss Snowflake has become the belle of the ball here.  She has a friend for everything - Daisy to play with, Delilah to cuddle up and nap with, and Satchel to follow around and pester.  She's getting better, but not perfect, with her housebreaking and has not had an accident in her crate in some time.  If she's in her crate (at night, mostly) she'll whine to be let out and then run to the door so she can go outside.  Clever girl!  She loves toys of all flavors, balls being a particular favorite although she lives to steal Daisy's squeaky chicken from her.  Then its two boxers
ripping through my house stealing the toy back and forth from each other.  Snowflake is still learning to be gentle with those pointy little baby teeth but we're seeing some improvement, she'll learn she just needs to decide she doesn't want to use them on people skin yet.  She loves to tug with us but we're making every attempt to be gentle with that.  We don't want any habits that are 'cute' at 5 months and 25 pounds to turn into annoying, hard to break, traits in a 60 pound grown up dog.  For example, Snowflake would LOVE L-O-V-E to be tall enough to nab food off of the counters in our house.  It's funny watching her try buuuuuut, one of these days she really will be able to reach and then it won't be so funny.  Trust me.  This little girl is a doll and we can't wait to see her find her forever home!

12/16/05 - Its so hard to do updates on puppies!   Snowflake is wonderful - she's a joy to have in our house because all pups are like that!  She's definitely not housebroken and the cold weather is hampering any of our efforts but we're trying.  She keeps the big dogs running all day and somehow manages to stick so closely to me she trips me. . a lot!  She's starting to respond to us stomping on the floor to get her attention and, I think, she's getting the hand signal to follow me or come a little bit.  She's learned that she can get up on some of the beds in the house but cries to be lifted
down (or 'saved' as my kids say) Snowflake has become a professional stair climber - up and down - and has learned to sit for her treats, not on command but as a default behavior.  Smart girl.   She's such a treat to have around.   She tugs with the big dogs and I frequently find her with our female "pinned", which makes me laugh.  It must be a huge confidence builder for her to think she can take a big dog!  I did buy batteries for our digital camera so I'll add lots of photos to the website soon!

12/10/05 - Our holiday puppy is here!  We've had other pups over the holidays and our 2005 version is a beautiful white girl who arrived from downstate today and is she ever cute!  She's got a longish face but is so very boxer.  Just adorable.  In typical puppy fashion she's pretty much worn out the adult dogs here this afternoon and she's still raring to go.  She's been galloping around the house - grabbing leashes and dragging the big dogs around by them (great fun!), finding toys that she thinks she'd like (balls are a particular favorite), testing out her ability on stairs (not so hot
yet) and LOVING being out in the snow.

Snowflake (my son named her) is not housebroken but does seem to be crate trained, hooray hooray, that will make housebreaking go so much more quickly.  She came out of her crate tonight, went straight outside and relieved herself immediately.  Seems to me she's a very smart girl.

Snowflake is all up to date on her shots and spayed so she's all set for a new home, she just needs to find the perfect one.  Her specifics are. . .with or without other dogs, with or without kids, with or without cats. . .I guess she's not all that picky.  A fenced yard would be really nice though.  Being a deafie she should never really be allowed to run outside without a leash or fence and it's so hard to be a puppy and get ALL your exercise on a leash!

If you have any questions about deaf dogs just contact us - our big male is deaf and he has done obedience and agility and knows all his commands, you wouldn't know he was deaf if you didn't know he was deaf.  As long as you're willing to put a tiny bit of effort into reading up on how to train a deaf dog then they're no trouble at all!
