3/1/08 - Zoe just left with her new family. What a great match this is! They adopted Apollo thru BAR 2 years ago and intended to add a young white female when the time was right. They recently reactivated their application a few weeks ago, and leave it to fate, Sweetie (Zoe) came to BAR and they just happened to check the site. In a flash, it was a done deal! Holli (the Mom) started to cry the minute she saw her. The boys are at the perfect age for a puppy. They were wonderful with her, and so well mannered! The oldest boy (not certain...maybe 8 or 10 ?) actually thanked me for having them in my home! They asked all the right questions, especially about raising a deaf dog. The boys wore her out good before the drive home. I have to share this, cause it made me giggle. The entire family has blue eyes just like Zoe so she fits in perfectly!!  I have no doubt that she will thrive with this new forever family!

2/28/08 - The adopting family was thinking of Greek for names for Sweetie to match their male dog, Apollo.
Their choice is "Zoe" which means Life.  Strangely enough the foster mom had though about changing her name to Zoe also.  She was one of three that survived a litter of eight, and the only  white of three whites that didn't survive.

2/26/08 - Sweetie is pending adoption with a lovely family who adopted another white Boxer from BAR a few years ago.  They were looking for a female playmate for him and emailed us the minute Sweetie showed up on the web site.  They don't care if she can hear or not and have cancelled their vacation plans to pick her up this weekend.  This is one lucky pup!

2/25/08 - Just a quick update on Sweetie. She's a typical puppy, keeping me busy! She finally did some "business" outside today! Huge step, as she was frightened of being outdoors as it was all new surface and smell and not so warm and cozy as she was used to! What a difference 24 hrs. makes..she was zooming around the yard like mad this afternoon! I'm going to make a little fleece coat for her, as she does shiver when we go out and it's going to be cold this week.
I was happy to see her confidence emerge. She was doing this dance like a bucking bronco...hopping and jumping and kicking up her heals. It was quite funny to watch this little girl express her joy! I've sound tested her many times, and I am convinced that she is deaf, (or one heck of a sound sleeper!) but we will get my vet's opinion when she is due for her next puppy shots. She's eating and drinking just fine. Check back in soon, as there will be lots of stuff to report, they grow up so fast...I'll try to keep my updates current with her progress. Oh, just want to share that when she is sleeping and both eyes are closed, her right eye (the eyeliner smudge) looks like she's looking at you, I did a double-take. She's sleeping...no she's not cause she's looking at me, no she is sleeping, no she is looking at me. No matter how you look at it, or how she looks at you, it's just adorable!

2/23/08 - Welcome BAR's new baby, Sweetie, to "Boxers by the Bay"! Her owners certainly choose the right name for this adorable girl. From her silky white coat to her gorgeous blue eyes, she's sure to melt your heart at first glance. If that's not enough, the cute wrinkles on her forehead and sweet puppy breath will win you over!!
We spent a busy evening getting her settled in. At her age, she is not housetrained, (so we will be working on that)and hasn't really been outside, except to go to the vet to get her shots. She is currently getting used to a collar and a very thin lead. It is unknown at this time if she is a "hearing" white. I'm tending to think she is not, but I willcontinue to test her. Certainly do not be put off by adopting a deaf dog. I adopted a deaf white boy through BAR, and I have to say, that he was easier to train than my hearing Boxers! Keep in mind that dogs communicate through body
language first and foremost, so no verbal is required (in most cases), and being born deaf, they don't know the difference. Plus a deaf dog is more focused on you, and his other senses are heightened ,(my deaf boy can be out of sight on the other side of the house and he will be at the door in 30 seconds because he "smelled" me) thus making it easier to train! Since I've been involved in rescue, I've heard of many situations where a dog's (bad) behavior is being blamed on the fact that the dog is deaf. In reality, it is the owner's lack of leadership. Sorry if I've gone on too much, but it's important to share information when an opportunity is presented. Owning a deaf dog is by no means owning a handicapped dog! Well, Sweetie has a big world to explore, might that include sharing in yours? I'll update soon as I discover more about this darling girl. If it is determined that she is deaf, a secure, fenced in yard would be a must!
