- Dear Friends, Gary and Ann
were terrific: filling us in on all of his medical
background the night we adopted him; sending him home
with us with food and some toys; enabling us to come
after 9 PM to avoid the traffic. We cannot speak highly
enough of their friendliness, helpfulness and
dedication. May they have many blessings in life.
Just an update after 10 days on Mangia Man (formerly
known as Brody).
Our beautiful boxer boy has been giving us much joy. He
knows his commands: sit, give paw, down and stay. We
need to work on his jumping up a bit. He is so cute
with his toys. He amuses himself by throwing them up
into the air and catching them himself. He loves to run
around our large fenced yard, and walks well on the
leash.
We are awaiting the delivery of a large crate from
Costco because Mangia Man does have some problems
when left alone; he has exhibited some improper
behaviour. We intend to crate him only when we have to
be out of the house, i.e., church, food shopping, etc.
We secure his leash in the
back seat
of the car, because he tries to jump in the front to sit
on our laps.
We are patient, and he is easily trainable. We know
that he will be a joy to our hearts for many years to
come.
God bless you all for all you do.
Maria, Robert & Mangia Man
2/11/09 - Dear
Friends,
We are in love with Mangia Man (Brody's now & forever
name)! he is asleep at my feet on his new bed as I am
working on the computer. I'll be sending out the signed two
copies of the contract in the A M. We cannot thank Gary and
Ann enough for all they have done for our Dear Boxer Boy and
for us.
God Bless you all.
Much love,
Maria, Robert & Mangia Man
2/10/09 - Brody has been adopted
1/25/09 - Brody had his
neuter done today, and he came thru it like a champ. When I
went to pick him up later in the day, I thought I might be
picking up a boy a bit groggy and out of it. Well....not my
Brody. He met me with tons of kisses and giddy up! He then
proceeded to tongue wash the faces of every staff member in
the office. This boy is really special.
I brought him home and gave him a couple of cups of kibble,
along with his fat free vanilla yogurts and a bit of
chicken. He ate almost all of it, and then went onto a
pillow and took a nap.
So Brody is now all ready for his forever home, and I know
that he will be into his new home very shortly. If you are
one of the lucky ones to be chosen for this boy, go out and
play the lottery, because today is your lucky day!!
1/21/09 - Our boy Brody had a
great weekend. He went upstate with a couple of his foster
brother and sisters and had a ball romping thru all the snow
that was up there. He met a bunch of new 4 legged friends, and
even found a few boxers who actually wanted to play with him. He
was typical boxer, rearing up on his hind legs, front legs
flying....he had a ball.
Brody also met a few cats, face to face. These cats had
extensive exposure to dogs, so Brody was just another dog in the
room. He looked at them and sniffed them, then went on to more
interesting things.
This boy is so happy, he loves to do just about anything, and is
so eager to please. We also learned he knows how to give
paw....so that is 2 things he knows...sit and paw.
Back home, Brody is just a pleasure to have around. He found a
few balls and rope toys, and gently carries them around, tossing
them in the air, sometimes catching them in mid air. He is such
a fun loving boy. He keeps coming over to me at the computer
table to give me some nice, gentle kisses. What a love!!
We are feeding Brody 1 3/4 cups, 2x's daily. We mix in a couple
of table spoons of fat free vanilla yogurt, and some strips of
chicken and he loves it. He is slowly filling out.
Brody is scheduled for his neuter on Sunday, and then he is all
set to go. I hope you have asked for him by now, I really do not
think this boy will be around much past this week.
1/14/09 - Time has flown by for our Mr.
Brody. Time to catch up. Brody started coughing shortly after he got
to the Wings and Halo Haven. We kept him in isolation, so none of
the other dogs caught it, and after the 1st week, he was doing
pretty well.
We went to the vet on Saturday, and had 2 different blood tests done
to see what was up with the seizures we were told he had. He had a
CBC, metabolic profile and they checked his Phenobarbital level. He
was totally awesome during the exam, as said before, this boy wants
EVERYONE to be his friend, he aims to please. His heart is good,
lungs, ears eyes, all good. The vet felt he was younger then 1 1/2
yrs old, but the surrendering family said he was that age, so I have
to guess they knew..right?
On Monday. we received the results of the blood work and all is
PERFECT. The vet feels that he should be weaned off the
Phenobarbital slowly over the next 3 months (you can not just stop
giving it) and watch to see if he has any seizures. If it turns out
he does in fact need it, the overall cost of this med runs about $5
per month...that's right...five dollars. We will see...but so far,
so good.
Brody has been spending more time with our pugs, and he is just a
bit too much for them. He is a typical uninhibited boxer boy, loves
to bounce around and loves to play a bit on the rough side. The pugs
don't appreciate it, but that doesn't discourage him from continuing
to play :o))
If you have been looking for a nice boy who can take long walks with
you, if you have another boxer who has a lot of energy who is
looking for a friend, you have found your boy. He needs some work,
he needs to be shown that jumping up to kiss your face is not ok.
When crated, he does tend to bark, and needs several visits to be
told to stop. In fairness to Brody, because he was sick, he was
crated for long periods of time. He also had a few pee accidents in
the crate, but keeps it dry most of the time and does his business
outside.
We are making an appt for Brody's neuter, and then he will be ready
for his forever home. His best match will be a very active family,
if there are kids, they should not be too young, as this bouncy boy
will probably knock down the little ones. He will love another
active dog in the house, he will not mind if that dog is dominant.
He is that easy going. So get those apps in, this boy is almost
ready to start the rest of his life....will that be with you?
1/4/09 - We welcome Brody to
the Wings & Halo Haven. Brody was surrendered to one of the shelters in
NYC as the family could not afford his care. Brody had been having
seizures, and was prescribed Phenobarbital. Well, Brody didn't like
taking it, so after about a week, the family stopped giving him his
meds. Well, naturally Brody seizures became more frequent, so they took
him to an emergency vet when he had them during the night. The vet
recommended a full workup, x-ray, blood work etc to determine what was
going on with young Brody. The family declined, and brought him to the
shelter the next day :o((
At the shelter, he was given his meds and
had not had a seizure while there. Cleary, they wanted him out ASAP, so
he could be more carefully monitored, so they called BAR, and we got him
on Saturday.
Brody is as sweet as he is cute. He is a
VERY happy, wiggly boy. He does get a bit bouncy and jumps up on you
during his excitement, but with a correction, he does calm down quickly.
We have taken several walks, and he has done surprisingly well. Every
once in a while he needs a slight correction, and he is right back by
your side.
We let Brody meet one of my pugs and my
spunky Boston girl. Not surprisingly, he likes to play in typical boxer
style, lots of feet flying, lots of bouncing. Well, my Boston girl
doesn't always like it that rough, and she can dish out her form of
playing pretty well to. She runs up to him and lunges for his neck
(sounds a lot worse then it is :o))) with LOTS of noise, and Brody was
not going to have any of that rough play. She put him in his place, and
he showed absolutely no aggression. The is, for sure, not this boys make
up. He is a sweetheart, thru and thru, and VERY eager to please. Tell
him he is a good boy, and he whole body goes into the famous boxer
wiggle :o))
Brody is eating beautifully, almost 2 cups
2x's daily. He is currently at 58 lbs, and a bit on the thin side.
History says the longer he is at the Haven, the chances are nil that he
will stay at that weight :o))
Brody has gone right into his crate, once
in a while does a bit of a howl/whine, but with a quick spay from the
spay bottle, stops and settles down. He kept his crate dry the 1st
night.
We will make an appt for the vet for a
blood work up and decide what needs to be done, if anything other then
meds for his seizures. He has not had any in the 2 days he is here.
If you were looking for a young, totally
sweet boxer boy, do not let this guy slip thru. He is a gem, and with a
bit of training, he will be a super addition to your family.
