Just had a mass removed from her butt which turned out to be a grade 3 mass cell tumor.

8/16/09 - Shelby is all settled in and confortable. Shelby has her bursts of energy where she runs and leaps around the yard usually in the morning and the evening. She has boxer wiggles and is content to be in the house, not much of one for the outdoors unless she is going for a walk! Its hard to believe she has only been with us a few months, it seems as though we can't remember life without her!

3/3/09 - Shelby is doing great!! She is a wonderful addition to our family. Its hard to believe a month has passed already. A special thank you to Leslie and her husband for taking such good care of Shelby until she found her way to us. Shelby loves her new dog bed and blanket. She has started to play with her toys. She loves to play with our oldest son McKenzie. She often will go and see what the kids are up too. If the kids are on the sofa Shelby will go and lay her head on them. She is such a wonderful old gal, no problems from the second she got home!

2/1/09 - Shelby has been adopted

1/30/09 - Shelby is pending adoption

1/18/09 - The holidays are over and I had a good time. We had lots of company and I got to be out and mingle. They call me the 'company' dog because I am so good with everyone. I'm pretty low-key so even when there are people here  who are afraid of dogs I can be out with everyone. I don't bother anybody.  On Thanksgiving I had to be in a little room by myself because we had a visiting dog who is afraid of other dogs. Well, the little girl kept coming in the room to visit me and play and I loved it! Love kids, Love um! I have been going out for a walk everyday. I have mentioned before that I am a good walker.  I especially love the snow and cold weather to walk in. I wear my coat and I look sharp! Now, I don't know if it is the weather or my age or what but I do have a touch of arthritis. Once in a while (maybe once a week or so) it flairs up and I take 1/2 of a pill, then I am good as new.  I am still hoping for a family to call my own.

11/16/08 - Hi! I am Shelby! Sometimes they call me "Shelburst" because when I am happy  I do these little "deer leaps" with bursts of energy. I am a very happy girl, but here is the thing, I need my own family. The dog that lives here is a big attention hog and HATES me. Yep, just because I exist. I am a really good girl, very lovable, full of kisses, love to be hugged. I never chew things up or destroy things. One of the things I do best, they say, is walk on a leash. I don't pull, not a big sniffer, I am not in a hurry, really I just love taking a stroll with my person. So it won't surprise you to learn that I did very well in my beginner obedience class.  One time we even got picked to assist the teacher because I am so good. (in everything but 'down' anyway, I hate DOWN, I like to be alert and see what is going on.) I got  a prize for graduating, I multi-colored stuffed squeaky toy, love it! Oh, I am also a very good at napping, sometimes when I am sleeping I just don't hear a thing. Out like a light, that's me. Other than my good napping you wouldn't know I'm 8 years old, and you would NEVER guess that I had cancer. I can hardly believe it myself. Thanks! Hope to hear from you soon!

10/25/08 - Shelby continues to adjust to her new surroundings. She is about 53lbs. and seems very healthy. She was on medication for and ear infection for a little while, but no problems since it cleared up.
Shelby loves all her people friends, both adults and children. Unfortunately our 98 lb female boxer, Ginger, and Shelby do not get along at all. Shelby is fine with Candy the Pekingese, Shelby also lives with a cat, who doesn't seem to bother, or interest her.
We have taken Shelby to beginner obedience classes, (in hopes that training will help her to get along better with Ginger) Shelby is one of the stars in her class, very easy and compliant. Shelby doesn't seem to have any issues with any of the dogs in her obedience class, except I think she would like to pounce on the yorkie puppy. (It looks more like prey than another dog.)
Shelby has been camping (RVing) for a weekend, which she seemed to enjoy. She walks easily on a leash, good sleeper, eats well, not fussy at all! Loves to be with her people.

Unfortunately because of Ginger we don't feel our home is the best place for Shelby.

7/28/08 - Shelby is here safe and sound. She arrived in Waterford about 6PM Sunday. Thank you very much to all who helped! I know it was a stormy transport with much rain and thunderstorms.

We really just tried to relax and settle a little last night, but today we all went for a walk as a 'pack.' Very successful.  We are taking it slowly though, we haven't all been in the same room at the same time yet.

7/27/08 - From Shelby's Transporters:
I did the leg from Utica to St. Johnsville and gave Shelby a nice ride with the top down on my car. She rode beautifully. She is  a very nice girl and looks and acts very healthy. What a nice addition to a family she is going to be.  Sandy

After riding in style with Sandy & the top down, we than stopped at Mickey dee's for water & double cheeseburgers. She than laid down in back seat till we met up w/ Deb for the next leg.  She was very well behaved.  Shelby is a sweet girl.  Gina

I was part of Shelby's transport. From Lee Mass to Hartford CT. This sweet little girl was a lovely gentle passenger. She drank water out of a cup with grace and manners. She gave boxer nubby wags and kisses to my friend after she gave her water.  She was walking while another dog was barking his brains off in her from another car and she didn't care.  She was fine to pick up and put in the back of my Tracker and she hopped right into Gail's van.  She is sweet and kind and I can't believe it was easy for her family to give her up. it must have broken their heart. She is a VERY lucky soul to end up in this rescue, but she so deserves it.   Ange

She is a wonderful sweet girl!   Good thing she was spoken for or I would have brought her home myself :)  Debbie V.

7/22/08 - Shelby has found a foster and possibly a forever home with one of our favorite volunteers.  She has adopted 2 previous Boxers with cancer from BAR and gives them a wonderful home for as long as they have.

7/17/08 - This is a desperate situation, same shelter that asked us for help with the boy we just posted for. They have a Sr gir (owner surrender) l in a Rochester, NY shelter. This is what they wrote to us about the girl.
She is about 8-9 years old and just had a mass removed from her butt which turned out to be a grade 3 mass cell tumor which the prognosis is not good.  we don't think that anyone would be likely to adopt her but wasn't sure if you would be able to take her.  We are speaking to someone that might be willing to take her but it doesn't look good.  It's unclear how long she would live with this because mass cell tumors can spread.
She was an owner surrender because they could not afford her.  She has lived with kids and good with dogs and ok with cats.  She's housebroken and not destructive.
Well, they emailed me later in the day, and sure enough, the prospective adopter is no longer interested in her. Honestly, there is really nothing worse then having a sick dog in a shelter, with little to no hope of being adopted.
Certainly, Mass cell grade 3 is is not a great prognosis, but it has been removed and she is a happy girl. It is NOT a death sentence. She could have years left, and deserves that chance. She deserves to live her life the way a Sr girl is meant to, being loved and cherished in her golden years.
If you are interested in helping her, whether as a foster home, or as an adoption, please contact me. BAR wants very much to save this deserving girl, and we are willing to make it easier for you to help this girl. Email me privately if you are serious about helping, and we will discuss what BAR is willing to do. Save a life today
