9/10 - Athena has been adopted

6/16/10 - Athena went to the vet last night.  We were so happy that she gained weight and is now almost 53 pounds.  Dr. Sally said she should not gain any more weight until after she is spayed, which hopefully will be soon.  We had found a bumpy-lump-mass on her back leg which Dr. S thinks is an infection and she will start antibiotics.  Athena was a trooper when blood was drawn and got her vaccinations!  Her front bottom teeth are chipped and worn down, Dr. Sally said it looks like she's been chewing on rocks!  That crazy dog.  Overall, Dr. Sally gave her a good health rating and an "A" for personality!  Electric fence training is pretty much complete.  She stops short when she hears the warning beeps.  Piece of cake!  She still needs training with walking on the lead as she is a chronic puller and I feel like she is going to pull my arm out of place.  Athena seems to be more protective of our home and lets every squirrel, deer, or jogger know there is no trespassing allowed.  Last weekend we gave her a bath and again, she did wonderfully.  Was very calm and obedient.  So funny afterward, was wound up and wanted to play so badly with our lab, Chloe, who was too busy finding a hiding spot because she knew she was next.  Athena continues sleeping in our daughter's room and the two have become quite a pair.  Things are looking good.

6/6/10 - We have had Athena for a week and it is better every day.  She was in the house alone all day with our choc lab, Chloe, on Friday while we at work and she did fabulous.  No problems whatsoever.  We make a point not to leave food out (which we do any way because of Chloe) and we already have a steel trash can with lid.  In her former home she was kept in a crate at night and when the family left but we have not used a crate and it has been fine.  Athena is quite trainable and her manners are slowly getting better.  She already knows "sit" and we are working with her on "down" and "leave it."  The electric fence training is coming along nicely too.  She has not gone to the vet yet, hopefully will in the next week.  Although she and Chloe have yet to actively play with each other, Athena is fitting in nicely with our family.

6/4/10 - Athena has been with us for 5 days now and is doing really well.  We had been warned she was a counter surfer and trash digger but we have yet to see these behaviors (yeah!).  Since she is a little underweight we have started to feed her twice a day and we eliminated the table scraps she had been used to.  She is getting more kibble overall and many, many doggie treats and bones.  Gaining weight may prove to be difficult since Athena's metabolism is running at warp speed!  She loves to play and is the perfect partner for our high-energy 8-year old daughter.  Our daughter loves to "dance" with Athena and Athena has been sleeping in her room at night.  We are training Athena on the electric fence which is going well so far, keep your fingers crossed!  She is so curious about the resident cat but who wouldn't be?  The cat is all attitude and will not allow Athena near her, which only makes Athena more curious.  We are doing very slow introductions with the cat, in the meantime, in a safe room all to herself.  We have a 6-yr old choc lab, Chloe, with whom Athena tries to play with but so far Chloe has not been very receptive.  Athena seems to annoy her at times by how excited she gets.  For example, during one of the many daily petting sessions, Athena gets so excited and wiggles around so much, she bumps into Chloe and even pushes her out of the way.  She has even stepped on Chloe's head!  Chloe usually walks away or will sit behind me.  At mealtimes Athena has to check out Chloe's bowl, which Chloe does not mind, but a more assertive or alpha dog would definitely mind and there is the potential for fighting.  We are hoping Chloe and Athena will become good friends.  We hope they will play outside once Athena is electric fence trained and can run free in the yard.  They have attempted play outside several times but the lead gets in the way.  Overall, so far so good.  Athena has such a cute, playful personality.  She embodies many of the best traits of the breed.
