3/1/11 - Hi everybody!!!  Luna here - i know, it's been a while but I'm here now :),I hope all my friends are doing well.  I am too.  But, there is one thing I want to tell you about.  Mom & Dad took me to the doctor because that 'cough-gagging' I was sometimes doing is getting more frequent.  Well, I went and Dr. Nunez checked me out and you won't believe what he found!  He said this:  Luna has a SEVERELY elongated soft palate and laryngeal paralysis.  Have you ever?!?!?  He suggests removing the excess soft palate tissue and leaving the 'other thing' alone - for now.  So, Mom & Dad are researching what the best options are for me.  Don't get me wrong, I am not in dire straights (yet) but we will have to do something because Dr. Nunez says it will get worse as I get older.  So, that's whats new with me.  I know I'll be just fine because I am in real good hands.  My Mom and Dad love me so much and won't let anything bad happen to me.,My pal, Sport, he's still handsome as ever.  I just love going on walks with him.  ,Well, gotta go. As soon as we have plan I'll update everyone. Bye for now...

12/22/10 - Hi everybody!!  Luna here - oh, wait its Baby Luna...that's what mom is calling me now.  I know, its been a while since I last stopped in but hope your Thanksgiving holiday was just great.  Mine was.  Sport and me got turkey and it was real good. Well, I don't have any bad news to report becasue I'm a good girl!! (but I still show daddy my teeth and growl at him and he just kisses me and hugs me and lifts up my lips -- while I'm growling at him -- so now I don't know what to do!) Oh, and my health is just fine too :)   I think something big is coming up because there are bags and bags of stuff all over the house - like Christmas is coming of something~I hope so because maybe me and Sport will get some more good food!!  Boy it sure is getting cold out but I don't mind - I love looking at all the pretty, sparkly and colorful lights when we go for walks and I want to go upto to the little reindeers and stantas I see on everybodys lawn but mom won't let me...she's no fun!  Besides checking in I wanted to wish all a very happy and safe Holiday Season and hope the new year brings good things for all my Boxer friends! Talk to you next year :)

10/5/10 - Finally, my Mom is letting me use the computer so I can do my update; I have been on her for weeks!  I love my forever home, Mom, Dad and my new boyfriend Sport - he's is just so handsome.  Everybody calls him 'the Sportster' and they call me Luna-Bear-Babe or LBB!!  I just love my home; I think I gained a couple of pounds; every morning I get rice and cut up chicken thighs then for Dinner I get Blue dry food, soaked in hot water of course, mixed with some Blue canned food and topped of with more chicken!  No wonder I gained weight - but, I'm told my Mom has a habit with putting some pounds on her doggies...,,Every day we go for a nice walk - rain or shine; I love going for walks - I get to see everybody in the neighborhood.,,Oh, my Mom got me new collar, it's hot pink with white polka dots.  I look soooo pretty. I also got a new walking harness and I like it! The Sportster got a new collar too!  Mom and Dad gave us a bath outside in the back; they got this shower out there and it was great - getting dried off with towel is the best part.,,I do want to say a great big THANK YOU to everyone at Boxer Angels for taking such good care of me and especially to my forever bestest ever foster parents Fred and Karyn - I love them and can't thank them enough for everything they have done for me.  Well, Mom is standing over me because she wants the computer so I gotta say bye-bye for now

8/20/10 - Lots of great news for Luna. First, Luna had several growths removed. I was waiting for her biopsy results before writing another update. We got her results yesterday and she is all clear! Second, she is getting adopted! Her new home is with a couple who have lots of boxer experience (they have had 10 boxers over the years) and a very handsome male boxer they rescued this spring. This is a great situation for Luna. We certainly will miss her. Luna joined our household when we were grieving for our BAR baby, Jessie. She has helped us to heal, and she has also done a great job helping us to raise our puppy. She has been so wonderful with him. But we are happy she has finally found her forever home with such wonderful folks. She is a lucky girl.

8/10 - Luna is pending adoption

7/19/10- Since our last update, Joey (the stray terrier) found his forever home. Now it is Luna's turn! Luna is so well behaved around the house. She is a devoted companion who wants to be wherever we are. She loves to snuggle and would love to be on the couch or bed with us, but she knows that isn't allowed and respects the rules. She loves a good belly rub. Walks have been shorter lately because of the heat and humidity, but Luna has been a good sport about this. She seems  to handle the heat a little better than Watt, our male. She is also not at all phased by thunder. Brave girl! ,,We continue to closely supervise Luna around strange dogs and people. She usually does a good job of ignoring both outside of the house. If there is an excited, barking, or lunging dog nearby, she will react and needs a leash correction to refocus her attention. Whenever strangers enter the house, we crate or leash Luna. When she is crated, she barks excitedly. We ask guests to ignore her, and she settles down after a minute and is quiet. Interestingly, we asked a friend to stop by our house recently when we weren't home. All of the dogs were crated. Our friend said Luna didn't even bark when she entered the house. Apparently all of the fuss is to impress us! If Luna is on lead when people enter the house, she doesn't make a fuss. She will act alert and curious, sniffing the air and wagging her tail. We don't allow her to enter the personal space of our guests when they enter the house. We will let them toss her a treat, but we ask them not to pet her and to otherwise ignore her. After a minute or so, Luna will lay down and ignore the new person. Over the weekend, a friend of ours joined us for dinner. After he had been here for an hour or so and Luna was sleeping at our feet, we took the leash off of her and she was a little curious but well behaved. The problem for Luna seems to be the excitement when a new person first enters the house (or we stop to talk to someone on the street). As long as they ignore her, she returns the favor. But she doesn't like it when someone she doesn't know reaches into her personal space to pet her. When that happens she lunges, and we restrain her with the leash. In the house she seems to be anticipating that moment when a new person enters. Once the initial greeting passes, she seems to be fine, but we haven't given her the opportunity to get into trouble.,,The key to Luna is to earn her trust and respect. I can rub her ears and belly, pull ticks off of her, inspect her paws, ears and mouth, and give her a bath with no problems. She not only tolerates this, but she LOVES the attention. If the vet or a stranger tried to do the same, she would protest. She needs time to feel comfortable with someone before being handled by them. I spent a day (maybe eight hours?) with Luna, walking her on lead, riding in the car with her (restrained), and then sitting outside her crate in my living room (with her inside) before I pet her for the first time. When I did, she accepted my touch with pleasure. I don't think she would have reacted that nicely if I had tried to pet her at the beginning of the day. ,,Gaining Luna's respect isn't difficult.  We don't yell at her or handle her roughly. She knows obedience commands and we use these to communicate with her. For instance, she can't jump on someone if she is sitting or laying down. If we ask her to sit, and she breaks the command because she is overcome by excitement and wants to jump up on someone, we say "no" and give her a leash correction. She responds to that. Often, she will respond to just a verbal correction if it is said with conviction. Overall she is a good girl who wants to please her people. She just has a little baggage from whatever happened in her life before she came into rescue.

6/11/10 - Hi everyone. This is Luna writing. My foster parents are so busy house training the new puppy that they said I could write my own update. That's right, my foster family has a 10 week old puppy!  I was so excited the day they brought him home! Me and the puppy would have played nonstop the first two days if they let us. But my foster family made us take breaks so the puppy could nap and stuff. Now that it has been 2 weeks and the initial excitement has worn off, we still play, just not all the time. Sometimes we relax, too. My foster mom told me she is very proud of me for being so tolerant and gentle with the puppy. Don't tell Watt and Joey (my foster brothers), but I am the puppy's favorite!

5/27/10 - Last month Luna went to the vet a second time. On occasion she was leaking urine when she was sleeping or just relaxing. This happened 4 or 5 times over a period of 4 months. It wasn't a house training issue since she wasn't even aware she was releasing urine. The vet said it was hormonal and not that uncommon a problem. So he put her on medication which she takes once a day, and she hasn't had any accidents since then.,,Joey, the stray I mentioned in a previous post, seems to have become a permanent member of our household. We haven't found anyone looking for him. Luna and he are old friends now and all three dogs get along just fine. We are still working with Luna on meeting new people and dogs. We find she does better meeting new people if she is on the leash. When someone new enters the house while she is crated she tends to get excited. Now that I am off from work for the summer, I am going to have more time to work on this with her. I'll keep you posted.

4/25/10 - Since Luna's last update, another dog has joined our household temporarily. A stray showed up at my brother in law's house, and despite our best efforts to find his family, no one has claimed him. We have been calling him Joey. Luna's reaction to him has been very informative for us. The first time she met him, Joey was crated. She sniffed and then stared at him, which is dominant behavior. After that, if he was crated and she wasn't, she would ignore him. If she was crated and he wasn't, she would get very excited and bark at him. On leash walks, she didn't pay him any attention. After about 5 days we let them interact and things have been fine ever since. Luna was a little pushy at first, but she accepts him as part of the pack now. They have been sharing space, dog beds, riding in back of the jeep, and eating together without incident. Like our other boxer, Watt, Joey is a submissive male. Luna isn't ready for the dog park, but she is making progress. She continues to do a good job of ignoring our neighbor's dog when we walk all of the dogs together. Luna has also been practicing meeting new people. We keep her leashed when people enter the house. We will keep working on this.

3/28/10 - Luna is a very talented girl. When we hike the trails near our house, she puts her nose to the ground like a scent hound. If she spots something good, such as a squirrel in a tree, she points like a bird dog. She also likes to high five for a treat. She isn't very interested in toys, and she won't chase a ball, but when we throw the ball for Watt, she thinks it is great fun to chase him. She doesn't want the ball. She just likes to race. Luna also invented another game she enjoys. When I drag the dog beds from the bedroom to the living room in the morning and then back at night  when we go to bed, she hops on for a ride. It is one of the silliest things I have seen. She looks like a surfer hanging ten. Luna doesn't talk like Chewbacca, as our other boxers have, instead she grunts. You can tell when she is happy, relaxed, or curious by her very expressive grunts. We are still working on meeting strange people and dogs outside of the house. She is fine when we pass walkers, joggers, and bikers, or people walking dogs. She ignores them all. She sometimes needs a correction when we pass an excited dog barking and racing behind a fence. But with a well timed reminder, she does refocus and ignore them. Her challenge is meeting new dogs and people up close. She has sniffed our neighbor's dogs, and she has gone on walks with them, but we haven't really let her interact with them. She isn't comfortable yet. She did meet a puppy last week and she did great. The puppy had very bad manners but Luna was very tolerant and seemed to enjoy the interaction.

3/17/10  Luna is making such great progress! She is greeting our neighbors outside with more confidence and a boxer wiggle. She will take treats and let people pet her as they say hello. She still is a bit nervous with strangers if they come into her personal space too quickly. Luna walks great on lead, knows basic commands, and has a fairly good off lead recall (with minimal distractions). Luna continues to play and interact wonderfully with our BAR baby! We've been walking her twice a day for an hour, and she gets mental stimulus while working obedience a few times a day. Recently we have been walking her with some of the other dogs in the neighborhood. She wants to be top dog, but will soon get into pack mode and relax. She has even been able to get close and sniff with other dogs on the walk. We have not had her play with other dogs yet, but for now she can be around them on leash. ,Luna crates very well. she goes in and gets a treat and settles in. She shows no signs of separation anxiety at all. Luna loves to ride in the car. I think she would rather go for a ride than eat sometimes!,She is fairly well behaved, but once in awhile when we arrive at our destination she will hop from the back to the front, but we are working on that.,Some funny things Luna has done while with us: we have a big walk in shower, and a few times she has walked right in and stood there when the shower is on, so we lather her up, then as you try and rinse her she walks out and heads down the hall all covered in suds. she has had more showers than baths in our house:-)  ,The biggest improvement we have seen with Luna is that her real boxer personality is starting to come out. She loves to snuggle and loves to be petted(especially belly and ear rubs). She is becoming very affectionate.,Luna's ideal forever home should have strong, confident leadership. Someone who can give her plenty of stimulus and exercise. Also if there is another dog, a submissive male would be o.k.

2/17/10 - Miss Luna loves the snow. She gets very excited and has a wonderful time running circles and eating it. (I've always wondered if dogs can get brain freeze. She doesn't seem to.) It is a good thing she has a black nose, or she would blend right in. Luna and Watt, our resident boxer, continue to enjoy one another's company. They play nicely together and share space without any issues. Luna now has free reign of the house when someone is home to supervise, and we are no longer crating her at night. She sleeps on the dog beds in our bedroom with Watt. Luna also went to the vet last week. The good news is she is basically healthy. She tested positive for hookworm but took the medication, so she should be fine. In two weeks we will have a stool sample tested to be sure she is clear. She weighed in at 52 lbs, which is a fine weight for her. I don't think she should get any heavier. She has a solid, muscular build on a compact frame. Although Luna has been a good natured girl at home, this is not the side of herself she showed to the vet. She was out of her comfort zone and acted out, so the vet muzzled her to make it easier. She did settle down so he could do the examination and give her the vaccinations she needed.

2/4/10 Luna joined our household on Sunday, and she is doing great! We can see that Luna is a strong willed, confident girl, but she has been on her very best behavior since she arrived. She has met our boxer, Watt, who is a mellow, submissive male. They were on-lead for the introductions and have been going on long leash walks together every day, twice a day since then. In the house Luna has either been on-lead or crated. Today, for the first time, we gave her and Watt some free time to mingle in the house without leash or crate and it went really, really well. They shared space without any problems and even played together. On Monday night Luna had a bath, and she was a perfect lady. I don't think she enjoyed it, but she didn't resist. She was very playful afterwards, so maybe she knows how pretty she looks when she is clean. At night, Luna has been sleeping in a crate in our bedroom, and we crate her when no one is home. This hasn't been a problem at all. She is completely house trained, walks well on a leash, and she knows sit and down, and she responds to her name. She doesn't seem to be interested in toys at all, but she does like playful interaction with us. We played a silly game after her bath where she would run back and forth between us when we would call her name (sort of a doggy version of monkey in the middle, but without the keep away part). She was very entertained by this. She also loves physical affection. She melts when you rub her ears or belly. She has been eating, although she has skipped a meal here and there. The switch in food seems to have upset her system and some of her stools have been loose.
