1/27/05 - Maris is our big beautiful wiggly baby! We love her so much! She has added so much joy to our lives! We did struggle for a long time to get her healthy but she is doing great now. Maris had severe colitis that we just could not seem to kick. She never lost her energy and loving ways but she was so thin and the daily accidents on the floor were very trying and defeating. Each time we thought she was getting better and gaining weight, she'd relapse. It was very scary! Our wonderful vet however never stopped trying to find the right combination of meds and remained positive that she could rehabilitate Maris. Finally after about 7 months and a lot of research, we got it. Maris has been all clear of her condition since October. The medicine that did the trick was Batryl, an antibiotic made by Bayer in case anyone has similar problems in their boxer. Our vet spoke to several internal medicine vets who said it had almost a 100% success rates in cases similar to Maris'. She is finally at a healthy weight where her hip bones and ribs are not sticking out, her coat looks great and she is a non stop ball of energy (she always has been though). She has not gone poo in the house in 3 months!

2/25/04 - Maris is doing so well now! Her demeanor is so calm compared to when we first adopted her that my mother commented on the fact she is like a new dog. Not that she is calm all the time. We still have those wonderful spurts of boxer playful energy and love every day several times a day. Maris graduated from basic obedience and was the best in her class. She is so attentive and willing to learn. She loves to be praised and wants to please. We are still working on getting along with all other dogs but now that my main coaching season is over I can take her to the dog park each day for some socialization. Hopefully that will help us realize that not all dogs want to play with us and it's ok if they don't.
Maris is a wonderful running partner and is in great shape. She will be tested for allergies in 1 month due to constant itchiness and skin irritation which we have lessened with a food change but not gotten rid of. Aside from her allergies she is in perfect health and is a big wiggly bundle of love. We are having so much fun with her!

12/31/03 - Hi again from Maris. Happy New Year! Our good girl is doing so well. She is an absolute star in obedience class and is so attentive she even does other dogs commands! Maris learns new commands so well she gets bored and feels the need to play with everyone and makes a bit of a scene sometimes in class when other dogs are trying hard to learn. We have had no accidents in the house in over 3 weeks and before that it was sporadic. She is starting to let us know when she needs to go out on a regular basis and even did well at her grandma's house over the holidays. She did counter surf when Gram wasn't looking and sampled a bit of the pumpkin pie that was waiting to be baked! Gram has learned her lesson though now and will never leave anything in boxer reach again!
We are really enjoying our time with Maris and are very excited to see her learning to be so good. Now that house training seems to be in good shape it's on to making friends with her brother, the cat.

11/7/03 - Hi everyone. Maris (formerly Roxie) is doing very well in her new home. We took her to the vet the first week and the vet said she was all Boxer! After treating her for 2 very bad ear infections and getting her itchiness under control, she is a new dog! She is filling out a bit and her coat is beautiful, all shiny and sleek.
We had a few accidents when she first arrived but potty training seems to be all under control. She does very well on a schedule and we have only had 2 accidents in the last 2 weeks.
Maris is starting obedience Monday. So far she has been a very good student at our home obedience class and we are going to make her a sign that says, "Will work for treats."
The only challenge we are still facing with Maris is the cat. Unfortunately Lou is not nearly as interested in the dog as she is in him. He is scared of her big snorty wiggly body but I think they are acclimating and Maris has gotten to the point where if he runs, she will chase but if I say no, she will come right back tro me to sit. I think eventually they may be able to be in the same room but as for now, we're keeping a very close eye on the two of them.
Thanks you so much for giving my husband and I the chance to care for this big silly girl. We adore her and her antics. Now neither of us can imagine what our life was like without her.

10/14/03 - Roxie has been adopted.

10/13/03 - Roxie is Pending Adoption.

10/10/03 - By George, we think she's got it!!!! Miss Roxie has not had an accident either in her crate or in the house in at least a week! (OK, one but if her foster father had put the gate up so the dogs couldn't get where they're not allowed I don't think that would've happened.) I'm so proud of Roxie - it was almost like the house training light came on in her head and she went "ooooooHHHH! So THAT's what you want me to do!". She really is doing so well - her coat looks beautiful, such a rich red color. She is doing some itching, I think a combination of some seasonal allergies and perhaps some food allergies, I'm going to try her on lamb and rice food to see if that helps her be more comfortable.
Roxie is a clown and a half to have here - a couple of nights ago she climbed up in the recliner with me and laid on her back, wedged between me and the arm of the chair. Then our boxer, Satchel, got up and curled up in our laps (mine and Roxies) it was hysterical! She put her front feet on him and sat there looking around like she owned the place - I couldn't stop laughing at her. Her foster dad took a couple of pictures so if they come out ok we'll post one. You can't help but laugh at that wrinkly face.
Rox has also mastered the sit and shake routine for a cookie - she also sits for her dinner and will lay down with a bit of coaxing (it's so hard for her to be still that laying down is like torture.) She comes when she's called - mostly listens when you tell her off, off the furniture, off the kids, off the other dogs. Roxie still steals things she shouldn't have if you leave them where she can reach them - she was carrying my daughters fuzzy pumpkin pocketbook in her mouth the other day. That was a Kodak moment that I missed though.
I just can't believe that this young lady has been in rescue almost 6 weeks - isn't there someone out there who'd love to make her a permanent part of their family??

9/29/03
- I can't believe Miss Roxie is still with us! She's doing very well with her housetraining with a few episodes of backsliding. She is staying dry in her crate 90% of the time now - maybe more, she is still occasionally having accidents in the house. We have found that if we walk Roxie rather than putting her out in the yard that she does much better. Rox really doesn't want to be out in the yard without people so she'll stay on the steps and bark to be let in rather than going potty.
And what a smart cookie this girl is - I've worked with her (a little) on some of her obedience and she is going to catch on very, very quickly. She sits when she's told, mostly, she's learning to down also to shake and roll over. She's doing better on a leash but still tries to turn walking into a game of tug.
Roxie is very much a puppy still - go, go, go! She is starting to learn to settle when everyone else does - she love rawhides to chew, and those stretchy plush toys with the squeeky's in them. When we crate her we use a stuffed kong - usually I try to freeze it to make it last longer but she's learned that the crate is not forever and she even went in this morning when I told her "Crate" rather than needing to be coerced. Roxie is a little anxious with people she doesn't know when they come in the house and will bark at them from a safe distance until she's sure they're 'safe'. Then she's very happy to meet them and let them love her up.
I just know that this girl is going to make some family so happy!!

9/23/03 - Roxie's still living the high life here! She's such a good girl and such a bundle of energy! The night before last Roxie spent a good bit of the time out of her crate, I was going to crate her in 'a minute' and laid down on the bed to watch something. When I woke up at 3AM she was staring at me wondering if maybe I'd scootch over a little so she could get up on the bed. AND she did not have any accidents in her free-time.
Roxie continues to do very well with our dogs - she shares toys and her food dish with no issues. She plays non-stop with both Satchel and our Boston Terrier so she has no issues with little dogs. She's fairly good with our kids although she'd happily eat food out of their hands if given the chance and they've been trampled in the melee a couple of times.
Roxie has also figured out how to open our screen door - she doesn't go too far but we're being careful to keep the latch on now. She is a very smart girl! Roxie will benefit greatly from some obedience training based on positive methods.
She's such a sweet girl and she's getting so comfortable here - don't you have room in your heart for her?

9/18/03 - Roxie has settled in so well here - she plays non-stop with our dogs especially Satchel, she just loves to wrestle with him. Roxie has had only one accident while loose in the house over the past week, she does frequently have accidents in her crate - especially if there is any kind of blanket in the crate with her. I'm guessing this is from her time spent in the shelter where she didn't have a choice where to go. She'll go in the crate, both urinating and defecating, then pull the blanket over it and lay down on the blanket - ewwwwww. We have not left her loose in the house either at night or when we're out because she is still a puppy and I'd rather clean a mess in the crate than worry about what else she'd get into. She has settled down now when we crate her and she only barks for a minute or two and then calms down and works on her rawhide or her Kong.
We're working on walking nicely on a leash with Roxie - she pulls and pulls but is learning there are easier ways to get where she's going. She sits nicely for a treat and shakes hands without being asked she's so eager to do what we want her to do and so happy to be in a home!
Roxie is going to need obedience to be a good member of society but she's such a sweet girl I know she'll make someone so, so happy!
Roxie loves our kids, other dogs, tennis balls (really any balls you'll throw for her), plush toys, sleeping on the furniture if she can sneak up there, ear scritches, peanut butter and cookies. Does she sound like the girl for you?

9/11/03 - Foxy Roxie (as our 7 year old has dubbed her) has come through her spaying surgery like a champ. She is all up to date on her shots though, heartworm negative too! Yipee! She's home and we working hard to keep her quiet per the doctors orders. It's tough to keep her quiet though - she just loves our dogs and they love her right back. Her skin is looking much better, much less red but she is still itchy, I think in another week or two she'll be all healed up.
Roxie has also proven herself a typical female of discerning tastes. I was concerned because she was turning her nose up at her food and nothing seemed to tempt her. Apparently Roxie much prefers my boys Canidae to Eukanuba and since I started to give her that she's eating like a champ - cleaning up 3 cups of food morning and night. Well, I suppose if I had to choose I'd pick that one too.
This is the sweetest little girl who wasn't treated too well wherever she came from - she flinches if you reach too quickly toward her head and my heart just breaks for her. I think she'll learn trust quickly and she's already giving me sad eyes to get permission to be on the furniture. So much for that plan. . .
She just came over to give me little kisses for doing an update on her and her nub is wagging to beat the band. She must know I'm filling in her future family on what she's up too. I already know how much we'll miss her when she moves on to her new home but there's someone out there who's going to be very lucky to have her.

9/9/03 - Our sweet Roxie is off to the vet today to be spayed - it was a quick turn around from the shelter to here to the vets but when they offered the appointment to her it seemed like a good idea. The sooner she's spayed the sooner she can find her forever home! She spent a very quiet night last night in her crate, she did bark to be let out when Mike got up to go to work but who could blame her? She had to go out! Speaking of going out - Roxie has had some accidents in the house but I think that she'll be fully house broken very quickly, she spent so long in the shelter that she's forgotten some of what she learned is all. Unfortunately the digital camera we usually use for pictures is not working so hopefully we'll find someone else with one we can borrow very soon so you can see this pretty girl with the short ears.

9/8/03 -  Our newest foster (and first girly!) is here - Miss Roxie was in a shelter in Staten Island, NY where she was adopted and then returned - then found by BAR. Now she'll get the home that she deserves. Roxie is a sweet girl who is just so happy to be in our home - she can't wait to meet the boys so she has someone to play with, and just loves my kids! She went into her crate just fine but we had to ask her to stop barking several times. I don't think this beautiful girl will be in rescue very long - she has so much to offer why would she?
