Pertinent Information
2/3/06 -
Samantha has adjusted very
well to our recent move to our 2.5 acres. She now hast o decide each
night which bedroom to sleep in and she has now taken over a couch in
the living room ( in the sunlight), that is when she wins the race to
the couch with our cat. Sam seems to love everyone and everything and
will also eat anything as we just learned. We were out cutting down a
large rotted oak tree down in our yard. Once done we found what had
caused a lot of the damage to the tree, that was black ants and mice.
Well the mice made it across the field safely BUT Sam kept trying to eat
the black ants. She is also constantly trying to make friends with our
neighbors horse and our old cow that we still need to bring home soon.
Samantha's leg still bothers her a lot, JUST like me, two days 3/10/04 - Samantha just graduated from her 7 week Basic Obedience Dog Training class at John Gagnon's "Doghouse" in Colchester, CT. Her instructor was Kasey Carpenter. Sam is doing great, she has learned to sing and loves to do this now when ever two people are talking BUT not talking to her, she also did this for her 7 weeks in class to her boy friend that she made at the class. She even taught him to sing so the whole class was in stitches. Samantha's leg has healed up ok, her scar has several lumps from the stitches and her foot swells up a lot at night, just like mine. I put her foot into a dog boot when she is outside for any extended period of time or when we go for a walk so that we do not hurt it any more then it already has been. She is a very smart, very lovable dog who does not realize that she is a dog, she thinks that she is my son's sister!!! 1/12/04 - Hi everyone. Sorry for the delays in information on Sam BUT I have been in the hospital again for another operation and I was not able to gain access to the web page that I needed to put in Sam's info. Samantha was operated on 01/07/04 so now she is "fixed" as my sons say. The operation area is so small that I had to look several times thinking that they had forgotten to do the operation. After being with Sam for the past 4 months it is almost a sad feeling thinking that Sam will not be able to have any offspring. She is such a beautiful young lady in so many ways and is so good for all of the trauma that she has gone through in her short 11 months of age. Her mange is finally cured after three dips, her right rear leg is healed up but she does have a problem wearing down her foot and toe nails when she drags the foot on the ground. She does not feel it because of the nerve damage to the leg so I have bought some boots for her to wear when she goes outside so that she does not cause anymore damage to the leg. She has now developed a reaction to the stitches that are on the inside of her leg from when they removed the rod so Dr. Love made sure that they did not use the same stitches. Dr. Love said that she should be ok and that the swelling in the 3 points should go down in time. Now that she is all operated on I am stopping tomorrow to make arrangements for her training. She is very smart and already knows a lot from just being here working with me while I am on my crutches. I am going to have my sons go to the training so that she will be worked a lot better then what I can do at this time. Sam's favorite place at night is sneaking off of her bed by the wood stove and sneaking onto the bed of my youngest son. There were nights when I had taken her off 6 times, now I just give up. Once he is a sleep off she goes to be with him. I am sure if she could get to the top bunk she would take turns sleeping with each of them. 11/28/03 - Samantha is still on the mend from all of the problems that she came to my home with. The vet has found that Samantha suffers from one of the worst case of kennel cough that she has ever dealt with and Samantha came to me with this problem. Unfortunately her broken leg has also caused a lot of nerve problems in the foot/leg so Samantha needs to wear a special boot when outdoors because she drags the foot on the ground and at times will walk on the foot with it bent over underneath her which in turn causes the skin to tear open and bleed and also wear down the toenail to nothing. Samantha has also developed a case of the mange. We tried to use a topical cream but this did not work and she continues to go bald in numerous areas. So, Samantha needed to have a special bath today and she will need two more of these mange baths in order to stop this problem from spreading further. It appears that her system shut down when she first came to our home from all of the leg injuries and kennel cough. Luckily Dr. Love has been on top of things and has continued her fight to get Samanatha on the road to recovery. She was a bit afraid to give the mange bath last month because of the leg operation that she had just had, she did not want to over tax Samantha's system BUT now it has come to the point where the vet had no other choice because Samantha was going bald and the other treatments just were not working. Samantha has had to undergo throat cultures where they put a tube down her throat and flushed out all of the gooop that was inside of it so that they could culture it . That is when they discovered the extent of the kennel cough and just how severe the case was. Hopefully this will be the last treatment course so that she will be able to rest up and then I can get her spayed. 10/26/03 - Samantha has been adopted 10/2/03 - Samantha is doing pretty good with her
leg. The pins were removed by Dr. Love at the Bolton Vet. There is nerve
damage to her foot and leg so she has dropped foot which in turn causes
her to drag her foot and walk on the foot with the toes bent under her.
This in turn causes her to cut up her foot a lot. I have been putting
medication on the cuts. Dr. Love stated that there is nothing that can be
done for her and hopefully through time she may learn to correct the
problem but there were no promises. 9/2/03 - Zoe went to the Bolton vet for her check up . Her stitches in her leg were removed and I was shown what physical therapy to do for her to make her start to use her leg. The vet wants to remove the rod in her leg which will be done in 2 weeks. She feels that the rod may be irritating her and the pain may be hindering her leg movements. Xrays of her leg and her lungs were taken. The leg is looking good and her lungs were clear but the vet gave me a stronger antibiotic because Zoe still suffers from a lot of coughing from the kennel cough. Hopefully this will help the matters a bit better and allow all of us to get some extra sleep without the cough waking her & I up. But now we have to deal with Caesar's snoring. I wonder if they make a nasal strip big enough to stop his snoring, I am sure that they don't!! Both Zoe & Caesar were taken for a good walk around the block by my sons. There was a lot of laughter from people passing by when they saw the size difference but there were also a lot of people who stopped us to ask how to go about adopting Boxers. I told them to check the web page, fill out the areas needed and go from there. 9/1/03 - Zoe ( Samantha) is doing a lot better with her pain management from her leg operation. She still does not put any pressure on the foot/leg but she can now sit down and lay down with out it taking an hour of her thinking how to do it without causing a lot of pain. She still has a lot of coughing from the kennel cough, we just ran out of the meds so at tomorrows visit I will ask for some more. She is getting a long great with the cats, she wants so much to be a friend to everything that moves. She has made great friends with our foster dog Caesar. She copies every move that he makes, even when he lays down for his naps she will copy exactly how he lays down and she will get her nose as close as possible to his face as they sleep. She wants so much to be a lap dog but has not mastered the art of getting into a lap without moving her injured leg. I will let you know how she makes out at tomorrows vet visit. She does love to go for rides with me, she just curls up and leans all of her 20 pounds against me as she goes to sleep. 8/29/03 - Zoe is pending adoption. 8/26/03 - Zoe is doing great. The pain in her leg is subsiding. she is now able to get up and the the stairs on her own. She loves to have everyone sit on the floor as we watch TV so that she can sit in our laps. She loves kisses. She is still trying to figure out why the cats do not appreciate all of the kisses that she wants to hand out. She is doing great for housebreaking, only two accidents and that was when she first came home here. She takes her pain and kennel cough medicine great with some cheese and she loves to have her hard food mixed with some canned puppy food. She loves to use us as a leaning post since she is still walking on 3 legs. Note: Zoe was an owner surrender to BAR last week who had a broken leg. BAR took her into rescue, had surgery performed on her leg and she is now in her foster home. |
