6/6/04 - We are very happy to say the Roxie is doing GREAT!!! She is such a joy to have in our family.  She is so loving and affectionate.  All she wants is hugs and kisses, which is fine with the family.
We couldn't have been more lucky, Roxie is the perfect Boxer.

4/28/04 - Our girl is doing just great.  Shotzie name was changed to "Roxie" so she can completely start her new life.  She has fit right into our family.  It feels like she always been with us.  She gets along with everyone, all she wants is a hug and a kiss and she always gets it she is a sweetheart with a lot of love.  I would like to thank boxer angels for completing us.  Keep up the good work and lots of thanks.

12/29/03 - I just had a nice visit with Katherine, Shotzie’s mom.  Shotzie was just at the groomers today for a bath and is now having a snooze in her clean new bandanna.  Katherine said that the first couple of days Shotzie was a little shy and had a couple of pee accidents in the house, but she has since gotten much more comfortable and has been accident free.  Shotzie goes for daily walks to the park with her new dad and one of the girls for some exercise and playtime, and has had fun playing with another boxer girl who is a family friend.  This pup is just under a year old, and she and Shotzie go at it in true boxer style to ultimately collapse in exhaustion from their play.  Katherine says that Shotzie is the most affectionate dog she has ever met, and I would have to concur with that.   Shotzie seems to be doing wonderfully in her new home, just as we all knew she would.  She gets lots of attention, affection and play time with her family, and they are truly delighted with their new girl.  Thanks everyone for all your help and support with transports and vet visits and advice and moral support to get Shotzie healthy and ready to be able to go home with Carlos and Katherine and their girls.  I am looking forward to hearing many more positive updates from these guys.

12/20/03 - Shotzie has been adopted.
With tears in our eyes the crew at the Lakeside Boxer Retreat bid a fond farewell to Miss Shotzie.  She drove away just a few minutes ago with her new family, Carlos and Katherine and their two daughters, Sierra and Megan.  Even as shy as Shotzie can be, she warmed up extremely quickly and was soon giving boxer hugs and kisses to Mom, Dad and the girls. They just seem to know when their forever family is here to take them home!   I am confident that Shotzie is going to be well loved and spoiled rotten by her new mom and dad.  She already has a lovely new red leather collar and leash, and apparently more toys for under the Christmas tree than Sierra and Megan!  We already miss our gentle little foster girl and wish her and her new family much happiness together.

12/17/03 - Shotzie is pending adoption.

12/13/03 - Shotzie's spay surgery was completed yesterday and went well. She is resting quietly today, she seems a bit sore and is not moving very fast. She spent most of the day in her crate with Foster Dad taking her out for potty breaks. Tonight we are giving her a bit more room to move with her leash on. She's not interested in moving too fast, so no worries there. The vet at the spay/neuter clinic did not address the lump on top of her head, although we asked him to look at it. All in all, she's doing well and will be soon ready for her forever home. For the next day or so she's going to be very pampered as she recovers from her surgery! It has been quite the haul for Shotzie to get to this point, and we are so happy to see her recovered from her heartworm treatment and on her way to good health. Shotzie will need year-round heartworm medications because of her prior severe infestation, but she is certainly worth it, she is such a doll-baby. We will continue to keep everyone updated on her lump and recovery.

12/6/03 - Shotzie broke a toenail playing this week and gave foster mom quite a scare when I found a living room that looked like someone had been murdered in it! Boy, do those toes bleed like crazy! I put her in the crate for the day with a toenail hanging only to come home that night and fight it nicely gone. Where she put it I'm not sure, nor do I really want to know!
Shotzie is going to have her spay appointment in a little less than a week and then she will be ready to have a forever home to call her own. She has been such a wonderful foster to have, she just has so much personality in that wiry little boxer body. She is typical boxer, loves to play, loves to rough house, loves to cuddle up with you and give you kisses. All you have to do to get her nub wiggling is look at her or talk to her, and she just melts into a joyous little puddle. She is a fabulous girl, please think about giving her a Christmas present beyond price -- a family to love.

11/28/03 - Hi Everyone!! This is Shotzie. My foster mom FINALLY said I could use the computer and send my very own update. I have to tell you all about the NEATEST THING that I my very own self discovered.... tennis balls!! I had no idea those things could be so much fun! Plus I have discovered that when I play with the tennis ball, foster mom and dad just laugh and laugh at me. I guess I must be cute or something. :-)
Foster mom says after next week I can go and romp with the boys. We have been getting to play a little more this week than we got to before, and I am having so much fun being with my foster brothers. I love to jaw and to box with them, but it seems like just as soon as we get in the swing of it, foster mom says we have to stop. I can't wait until I'm all over my treatments and I can have fun again. And the worst part is, I don't even feel sick! Its so hard to be patient when you're a boxer girl like me.
I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and say that I am waiting ever so patiently for the day when I will have a permanent home to call my own. I will be such a good girl for you, I will give you loads of kisses and hugs and boxer smiles. Just wait 'til you see how fast I can wiggle and what a silly kidney bean dance I can do when I meet you for the first time. I might be a little shy at first, but once I know you are my very own family, I will be inside out with joy and happiness! All I ask is for a gentle, loving hand, good nutritious food to eat, regular vet checkups and prevention, and some toys to play with, and I will give you 100% of my heart forever and ever. Sound like a deal? Have your agent call mine and we can work something out!

11/24/03 - Shotzie is back after a few days at Aunt Tina's for her last heartworm treatments. A few more weeks and she will be able to have her spay and be ready for her forever home! Thanks everyone who helped transport her up and back for her treatments, we all appreciate your time and effort to help this little girl get healthy. She is such a sweetheart, I can't wait until she is healthy and can be unrestricted in her play time with the other dogs.
I definitely see Shotzie in a home with another dog to play with, she truly enjoys the presence of other dogs and loves to play. She will do best with older children. Even though she is wonderful with our toddler, Shotzie is fairly hand-shy, and gets afraid when the little tornado comes flying at her with hands in the air. She takes no defensive action other than to just make herself scarce, and when she isn't being chased by the baby she is very affectionate with her.
Shotzie will appreciate gentle, loving handling and she does not need any firmness. She responds immediately when being told "NO" and she learns quickly what you do and don't want. I know that this beautiful soul is going to make a wonderful companion for years to come for some lucky person or family. Please consider bringing Shotzie into your life, you will not be disappointed and you will be rewarded with a lifetime of boxer hugs and kisses from this wonderful girl.

11/16/03 - As we find is true with all dogs once they begin to feel comfortable in a new environment, little Shotzie is beginning to show us a personality and we are enjoying her transformation immensely. Shotzie is a mischievous little girl. She likes things to chew on, hard plastic is a favorite and the coffee table will do nicely if there isn't a toy handy. Woe to the unwary caretaker or owner of Shotzie who does not provide enough toys for her to satisfy her need to gnaw! Fortunately we have a nearly endless stock of toys handy here at the Lakeside Boxer Retreat and if one is not immediately next to her, one can be found to distract her with. Shotzie will, if left without a suitable toy, seek one out, usually from my daughter's toy box. She just loves to have a toy to chew on. Shotzie also loves to carry and hide the soft toys we have, I think a leftover behavior from her days as a backyard breeder's dog. She thinks the lambie and the moo-cow are puppies, and tries to find safe places to hide them. I have had to put them up in high places to save them from an untimely freezing out in the corner of the back yard! Shotzie has also taken to being a bit protective of my daughter. If John roughhouses with her too much for Shotzie's taste, Shotz will bark at John to tell him to "Stop!" She still gets along beautifully with the house dogs. She spends frequent time in her crate due to the need to keep her quiet during treatment, but everyone has been so good that it has been possible to let her out frequently. My stepson was here this weekend, and he and Shotzie spent lots of time cuddling together on the couch or the floor. She continues to be an extremely loving and affectionate pup with all people, but is most attached to me and will follow me wherever I go if allowed. There are worse things in this world to be than "Shotzie's person." She has an insatiable need to be loved and hugged, and I can't say I blame her. She has lots of lost time to make up for.  Are you the family that can give her the love and hugs she needs?

11/11/03 - This is a really quick update to let everyone know that Shotize is doing just grand! She did have a UTI, and just the first few days of her round of antibiotics have helped her have four dry days in her crate. We are letting her spend as much time out of her crate as her heartworm treatment will allow. My boys have been told off so many times for trying to entice her to play that now if she even comes near them they give me a sideways look and slink off to lie down on their beds, much to Shotzie's disappointment. Last night when Snoopy was snoozing on his pad on the living room floor, she actually walked over to him, turned around, and sat right on his head! She is doing very well and I know we are all looking forward to the successful completion of her treatment, not just so she can have a forever home, but so she can be allowed to play in true boxer style.

11/8/03 - We are overdue to update you all on our little Miss Shotzie. I call her little, but she really isn't, she is 60+ lbs as of her last check. However she is so graceful and dainty in the way she moves and behaves with people that she seems much smaller. We are currently treating Shtozie for a urinary tract infection. She was having more accidents in her crate than we felt was normal or warranted by her situation. She is on a round of antibiotics currently and will be retested after two weeks to be sure she is cleared up. Crate accidents aside, Shotzie is just a lovely dog. We had my inlaws over for dinner tonight, and Shotzie was better behaved with them than my house dogs. She is an extremely people-oriented dog. While she does love to play with the boys, her focus is YOU. Shotzie reminds me of that old song from way back when -- "I wanna be loved by you, just you! And nobody else..." She continues to prove to be an excellent dog with small children. My toddler is as good a temperament tester as I have found, and Shotzie has been nothing but patient and loving with our two year old daughter. We think the world of this wonderful dog, and I just know you will too. Shotzie has a little way to go with finishing her heartworm treatment and getting her spay, but once she is healthy and ready for a home, she will make the most wonderful companion imaginable for some lucky person or family. Give this girl a chance in your home and you will never be sorry!

10/30/03 - Miss Shotzie has been back with us for just about a week now. She got her first heartworm shot up at Aunt Tina's last week and has come back to us for some recuperation. Our biggest challenge right now is keeping her quiet. Shotzie is a VERY good girl in her crate, she is no trouble at all except for a couple of pee accidents in the crate at the end of a long night. Apparently she felt it was unfair that the house dogs got to go outside before she did! She does cry some in her crate, especially if the boys are playing and she wants to join in, or when I first put her in and walk away. She is a total mush dog and likes nothing better than to be with the people and pups in the house. She is good with other dogs, great with my little girl and a little piece of velcro with foster dad and me. Shotzie is trying to make up for a few years without enough attention, and she is so sweet that it is easy to want to give her all the hugs and kisses she deserves. Shotzie will have a few weeks' recuperation from her heartworm meds and then need to be spayed before she can go to a forever home. Shotzie will do wonderfully in a home with other dogs that she can play with and will be fine in a home with small or large children. If you are looking for a dog who will love you with every bone in her body, Shotzie is your girl! She is mellow when outside on leash and very very good with strangers and with company. Please consider making this girl a permanent part of your family, won't you?

10/20/03 - Ms. Shotzie is still visiting with Aunt Tina. We are waiting for the meds to come in to the vet for her to start her Heartworm treatment.
Shotzie just LOVES to play with the other dogs and it is very hard to keep her quiet unless she is crated.
I see this girl in a home with another boxer baby to play with. I do think she had a slight UTI when she came in...I have her on some meds and she is doing much better...no accidents at all. She is doing well with all the dogs in my home except my 4 yr old female who doesn't care for Shotzie and goes after her.
Otherwise Shotzie does well with all the dogs.
She does have a bit of interest in the cats here but I don't think she will hurt them. If she goes to a family with cats I do think the adjustment period could be long and a tough one but eventually I do think it would work.
Shotzie is good in her crate and is quiet but, she really would prefer to be out and about with the others.
As soon as Shotzie gets her first treatment, she will move back to foster mommie in NJ.

10/11/03 - Time for an update on Shotzie. I haven't unloaded them from the camera yet, but yesterday I got the cutest pictures of Shotzie playing with a toy. That may not seem like much to most people, but when Shotzie first arrived here, she had not ever had a dog toy in her life. It took her a few days to figure it out, but now she will carry the toys around and make them squeak. She seems to really enjoy playing with toys, and it is such a pleasure to watch her light up when she does. Shotzie's going to go to her Aunt Tina's for a few days to get started on her heartworm treatment. I'm going to miss her cute little face and her happy wiggle while she's gone. This girl is such a delight to have around. If you have a boxer-sized hole in your family, won't you consider filling it with this adorable girl? You won't be disappointed, she is a dream of a dog.

10/08/03 -
Shotzie went for her initial vet visit yesterday. The good news is that there is no evidence of dysphasia, and she got her rabies and the first of two DHHLP vaccines. She will need a followup shot in a couple of weeks. The bad news is that Shotzie has heartworm. We will get blood results today to find out what the level of infestation is so that we can then know her course of treatment. Poor little Shotzie also has whipworm, and will be getting treated for that over the next three days. The vet also recommends that the lump on her leg be looked at, but this will need to wait until her heartworm treatments are complete.
Her health issues aside, Shotzie is as nice a dog as I've come across. She is very mellow when you are out and about in public, and her "company manners" are excellent. She made quite an impression on everyone at my vet's office with how well-behaved and quiet she was. She seemed to enjoy the ride to and from the vet, and was clearly very relieved when she figured out she wasn't being left there.
She continues to get along well with my dogs, although she has gotten a little bossy with Snoopy. Snoopy is a barker when there are people or noises outside, and right now with remodeling going on, he gets a bit out of control. When I tell him to "knock it off," Shotzie goes and stands in front of him and growls at him! Apparently she thinks she is mommy's Enforcer! Snoopy of course just ignores her (and me too half the time), so its kind of comical. Keeping her quiet during her treatment will definitely be a challenge, as she really loves to play with the other dogs and has plenty of youthful energy. We will keep you updated on Shotzie and all her issues. Soon she will be ready to go to her forever home. I envy the lucky family who gets to take this little girl home, she is an adorable dog with a heart of gold.

10/07/03 - Shotzie is adjusting very well to her environment here at the Lakeside Boxer Retreat! She is a real heart-stealer, this girl. She has such a sweet personality! She's looking better already, I trimmed her nails and bathed her, and she will go for her first vet appointment today. Shotzie has had a few pee accidents in the house, we think mostly due to her timidness and anxiety in adjusting to new surroundings. She is not used to getting a lot of love and attention from people, and she is trying desperately to make up for lost time in this department. This is the sweetest little girl you could ever hope for. She has had no training whatsoever, so she is learning to sit and to lay down when asked. She will sit quickly for a treat, but a praise reward is just as meaningful to her. She walks extremely well on the leash. She doesn't pull at all, and she is very laid back with people when she meets them outside. We are in the middle of having an addition put on our house, and our front yard is full of burly young men with hammers this week. I took Shotzie out to talk to the contractor, and she was perfectly fine with everyone. She will bark if someone comes to the door, though.
Shotzie is doing extremely well with the resident dogs. She does not appear to have any dominance issues, and accepts my big male as the dominant dog in the house. She likes to play and initiates it frequently with the boys. We are continuing to limit the intensity of her play until she is a bit more sound physically.
Shotzie also continues to do very well with my two-year-old. I think she would do great in a house with small children or other dogs.
Shotzie is a loving, gentle, sweet girl. If you make her yours she will reward you with all of the love and loyalty you can imagine. Can't you see yourself getting gentle boxer kisses from this pretty girl and long looks from her soulful loving brown eyes?

10/05/03 -
Miss Shotzie has gotten over her nervousness of yesterday and has decided that she wants to be wherever I am! Shotzie has the most beautiful head and face, she is really a pretty girl. She is somewhat timid and shy and very nervous in unfamiliar situations. However, she is also extremely affectionate and just dying to be loved. She has the most amazing wiggle and gives the best kisses! This is a dog who will need a lot of human attention and a gentle and patient hand so that she can learn to trust and feel safe. Shotzie has some structural issues that will need evaluation, she appears to have some soreness both front and back in her legs/hips. She will also need to be spayed and brought UTD on her shots. I am looking forward to putting a little weight on her, she is a bit too thin for her size. Last night Shotzie got a manicure on most of her nails, and this morning she got a nice bath. Shotzie has met both of the resident pests and done *very* nicely with them. She has good canine social skills, and would very much like to play with the boys. She has initiated play with both dogs, but we are not allowing playtime right now as we are not sure how much stress her legs and hips can stand. Until we know more about her physical condition, she is going to have to be content with calm interactions. Shotzie spent the night in the crate, she did whine a fair bit after the lights went out, but settled down after a while and went to sleep. She had a little pee accident in her crate this morning, but I don't think she has any housebreaking issues. We will make some adjustments with her schedule and keep an eye on this over the next few days. So far I am impressed with this little girl, she seems to have a wonderful personality and with the right family she will come out of her shell and blossom into the best dog you have ever had.
