Pertinent Information 10/19/05 - Wow! Our boy Jake has been with us for a year already!!! It's been a great year. We all celebrated Jake's adoption anniversary with lots of new doggie toys and treats. Jake even enjoyed a large piece of carrot cake to celebrate his special day. We really wanted to take him to the doggie park for a nice walk but the rain wouldn't let up. He's such a happy boy. He's been playing with his new stuffed raccoon all day - he keeps head butting us with it so that we'll play with him. Jake has come some far in just a year. He has filled out so nicely. He is a pleasure to walk on his leash. He loves chasing squirrels and cats. He still hates our mailman and the pizza guy. He loves playing in the backyard with his 4 human siblings. The children adore him as he does them. My husband, Rob, remarked the other day that he couldn't imagine ever loving a dog as much as he loves Jake. Thank you BAR for all that you do. Jake is a wonderful and loving companion for all 6 members of our family. One day, we will add a little white girl to our family, but for now we are content with our big beautiful boy, Jake. 8/2/05 - Hello everybody. Jake wanted me to tell you all about his new food. Royal Canin came out with a new dry food made especially for boxers. I first heard about it a couple of months ago and just discovered the actual product at Petco last week. At first I was afraid to change Jake's food from his usual nutro max. I didn't think he would like the change. Boy, was I wrong. He loves his new food. We now have to hide his food container in a closet because he was opening the bin and helping himself to his new chow. I thought this would be good info for any finicky fosters that need to gain weight. It is slightly pricier than the nutro max (figures Jake would love it). Jake is enjoying his summer with his family. As hot as it has been, he prefers to be outside with us. He has his own plastic pool that he likes to plop down in. He loves drinking from the hose and the kids water guns. He's so spoiled that he even has his own doggie ice cream in the freezer. He loves chasing moths and butterflies - it is the funniest thing to see him running and jumping all over the yard. We took Jake to a dog park nearby. He loved the long walk and made lots of friends with all the other dogs except for the 2 male boxers that he met. He prefers small dogs. When we do get another dog, we would like to get a female white boxer puppy. Jake loves to mother our children and small dogs so I think he would do well with a puppy. He met his new great dane cousin last weekend and fell in love with her. She is a 4 month old blue . Jake has no idea how big his cousin is going to be and I'm sure he'll be a bit confused by her size the next time that he sees her. My sister remarked that even Jake's ears are strong. He's filled out beautifully and is a strong, healthy boy. I'll be sure to write more again soon. Diena 5/20/05 - It's been awhile since I last wrote and Jake wanted me to let everyone know how fantastic he is doing. He weighs in at 76 lbs. now. He's a very good eater. He loves eating peanut butter and cheese. He also enjoys an apple slice once in awhile. He does very well on his leash. We ended up getting him a zapper collar (as my husband calls it). Our trainer recommended it as a last resort and it has worked wonders on Jake's crazy outdoor behavior. Whenever the kids wanted to play outside with Jake he would get so excited and bite at their feet and knock them down. He didn't play very nice. He wouldn't even let me pooper scoop if he was outside with me. Know when he wears his collar, he usually responds to my command with the "sound" warning from his collar - he very rarely needs the "zap". We can know have friends and family visit without the fear of Jake jumping on them. We even hired a babysitter for the first time and came home to find our boy, Jake cuddled next to her on the couch. He is such a love. When our 4 kids were all sick with a stomach virus this winter, Jake acted like a mama dog and protected each one of them. He loves chasing after squirrels. He has 3 stuffed squirrel toys that he has ripped to pieces. We even put a fake squirrel statue in the backyard that Jake likes to knock over. He rarely uses his crate these days for training but he will go in it occasionally to nap. He is quite a house wrecker though. We will definitely be needed a new couch by next year (our fault for letting him on it all the time). He jumps on the backdoor to let us when he wants to come in and is ruing that too. I don't think that we will be able to put the screens in our doors this year for fear of Jake jumping through them (if he sees the mailman or a squirrel he'll be sure to get through the screen). Well, enough for now. Thanks again for our awesome pooch!!!! 2/3/05 - Jake had a wonderful first Christmas with his forever family. Santa gave him tons of goodies but his favorite is his stuffed squirrel (He goes crazy whenever he sees a squirrel). He is very spoiled and very loved. Two weeks ago, I took Jake to a trainer. He was having some dominance issues and was showing some slight aggression. The trainer was fantastic!!! Jakey learned sooo much and is behaving much better these days. He has a brand new crate that we've been using during the day when we go out. At first he wasn't too fond of it (we never crated him before because we were told how much he disliked it) but now he'll even go in it himself and take a nap. All the snow hasn't stop Jake from digging. He loves to dig and bury things. He loves the snow too. Our children throw the snow up in the air and Jake goes crazy. Jake loves everyone except for our mailman. He barks like crazy and jumps on the couch when he sees him coming. At night, Jake checks in on each child (we have 4)before he is able to put himself to sleep. He's sleeping next to me right now as I type. He is a wonderful dog and a loving companion. He greets me with big boxer smooches every morning. We all love his boxer hinny wiggle. My husband pictures us having another boxer joining us by the summer - we'll have to wait and see. For now, Jake has play dates with his cousin, Stone, the bull mastiff. 10/27/04 - Jake is doing wonderful in his new home. You can no longer see his ribs (it must be all those extra doggie treats the kids are giving him). He is such a good boy. He's always eager to give out his share of kisses (as well as hugs). He loves his new backyard where he runs like crazy and tosses his toys in the air. When the kids come home from school, Jake does "the wiggle", he gets so excited to see them that his entire rear end wiggles. Daddy tries to take him for a walk everyday and he's getting used >to the leash. He's quite a celebrity on our block. All the kids want to visit Jake. Even the mailman brings him special cookies. By 8PM Jake is pooped and goes on his bed for the night. The past couple of mornings Jake has been found sleeping in bed with our 5 yr. old daughter. He also loves her light up sneakers. Our 2 older girls were a little timid around dogs but all that has changed with Jake - they adore him (they are 7 & 9). Our 3 yr. old son covers Jake with kisses and Jake reciprocates. He had a couple of fleas when he came home so daddy took him to the vet and got him some frontline - it seems to have worked. He is the perfect addition to our family - and boy is he handsome!!! We will be sure to keep you updated on Jake's progress. Diena 10/9/04 - Daddy picked up his new son today from his wonderful foster family in NJ. Although he had brought Jake's new bed with him for comfort, Jake preferred to lay on the seat (our friend that went along for the long drive sat on Jake's bed and played with Jake). Daddy called us when he turned on our block. Mommy and the 4 kids were waiting on the front porch for him. What a gentleman!!! Jake came up to each one of us to say hello. He is so handsome (even more so than his pictures). He loves the backyard! He ran like crazy and loves to play toss. He ate a little of his food but prefers all the cookie treats that his new neighbors have been bringing for him (even our mailman brought Jake a bone). He's lying down next to me as I type - he must be pooped from all the excitement. He loves American cheese. He's been busy exploring his new home. The first thing he did was run upstairs and check out the kid's rooms. He also likes to put his head in the fridge when it's open. We are so lucky and thankful to BAR, Kathy, Gary, Terry, and all the wonderful volunteers at BAR. We will definitely keep you updated on our newest family member, Jake. 10/9/04 - Just wanted to let you know that Jake has gone home back to Long Island with his new Dad. The whole family is so excited...they have everything ready and waiting for him, including toys, treats, and even some London Broil! Jake took right to Rob, and even gave him a big Boxer kiss right on the mouth. :o) I know he be one happy dog, and look forward to hearing how he is doing. 9/30/04 - Jake is pending adoption. 9/27/04 - Jake continues to do well here. He is very attached to
me, and follows me around everywhere. He always has a toy in his mouth,
wanting me to play. He and Sophie are getting along well, and enjoy
playing together, but he seems to prefer playing with the humans. He just
can't get enough love and attention. His appetite continues to be HUGE. I
am determined to put those much-needed pounds on him. He still has had no
accidents in the house, and I have not crated him except when I go out. He
sleeps at the foot of my bed, on the floor. We put an extension on the
fence, and he has not been able to jump over it. I am keeping my fingers
crossed on that one! He did pay my piggies a visit today though, but
again, the pigs cannot be bothered with him and pay no attention to him
9/26/04 - Jake is doing well here. Today, being a football Sunday, Jake got to experience just what a houseful of Eagles fans can be like (LOUD!). Although I was not here for the party today, I'm told he took it all in stride. He sure had fun while the guys tossed the football in the yard, and so did my Sophie and Ginger, the neighbors' Golden Retriever. They are all fast asleep now, after all of their running. Jake's appetite is huge. He ate his two meals of 3 cups each of Nutro Max, and was still hungry last night, so I gave him another two cups, which he polished off. He definitely needs to put on at least 5-10 pounds. He is going to be a big boy when he fills out. We did discover today that he can jump a fence :o( It is the fence to my neighbors who own Ginger, and Jake saw her on the other side and just went for it, and had no problems at all clearing the fence. That side of my yard has one small section of fence that is shorter than the rest, probably about 3 feet high. Needless to say, new fence will be installed tomorrow! He also jumped right into my pot-bellied pigs' pen. Luckily my pigs are used to dogs and did not really pay him any attention, I was more worried about what he would do to them. I got him out right away, but he seemed only curious, not aggressive. An eventful day for sure. He is such a sweetie, though, and just loves to be loved. He also loves to play with all the toys he can. He has not had any accidents in the house, and figured out my dog door on the first try. And if I haven't said it before, he is really, really handsome. A great dog, looking for a great family to call his own. 9/25/04 - Our newest foster, whom we've named
"Jake," arrived today. He is a big mush, sweet as can be. He was very
excited when he first got to my house, and since he had been cooped up in
the car for quite some time, I let him run around the yard for a while (my
daughters and my Boxer Sophie were at my neighbors'). He was fascinated
with my chickens and pot-bellied pigs! He had a lot of fun running around
and around. Then I introduced him to my girls, and was quite the
gentleman, sniffing them and giving small kisses. I was very impressed.
Then I got him set up behind the baby gates and introduced him to Sophie.
They were wiggling so much it made me laugh. They got up on the gates and
were kissing each other, so a little later we took them outside on leashes
and let them meet. It was love at first sight. They had a lot of
supervised playtime. Finally, Mr. Jake is asleep next to me as I write
this. I think he had a good first day here. He is just a great guy. Get
your applications in soon, I have a feeling he will not be here for long. |
