Cinnamon and Nutmeg have been adopted

Well we finally got our adoption papers
in! Sept. thru Dec. is busy time for the USPS where we both work.
Thankfully we have a wonderful network of family & friends that can act
as back-up so that the girls are never left alone too long! A week-long
stint in the Hospital for Mom scared the girls, & homecoming turned them
into Velcro pups! These 2 are strongest bonded pair We've ever seen!
Thank GOD we had room to take them both! I can'timagine ever breaking
these 2 up! The love they give back makes everything worthwhile...such
an affectionate pair with everyone! They are so happy for the smallest
amount of attention it breaks my heart to think how their lives began.
Thamk you to BAR for saving them just for us!

Great News! the
girls have been given a clean bill of health from the Vet! No more yucky
medicine
at night! They really were pretty good at taking their meds, but
obviously didn't like it! Now that the mange has completely cleared up
we've scheduled their surgeries for spaying. We had to make it for
2 weeks because they are both in heat! Cinnamon has reached
53lbs.;& Nutmeg is up to 50lbs..both are looking so much better, filling
out, losing the dry 1st coat that was coming in, and generally behaving
like the happy healthy pups that GOD intended! We're in the process of
adopting our precious girls, so this update is mainly for those of you
who may have been following their progress! We think they're
really happy, we Know we are!!!!

The Girls have been
with us 4 Weeks now. They have completely stolen our hearts! How could
anyone
ever treat them the way that they were. I just don't understand
such evil. These 2 just adore to be cuddled. If you have a lap,
they want in! If you have a snack that's even better! They
have developed a fondness for tennis balls, a couple of days is the
maximum life span! Their coats have gotten sooo much better..Really
soft, and starting to take on a reddish gold color, So beautiful!.
We hope Mondays' Vet appt. will confirm their health issues are finally
behind them!

The girls are still inseparable.
We can't seem to get either of them to eat out of a single dish.
They start together on 1 & when it's empty they move to dish #2!
Separating them is not an option! They whine & refuse to eat, so
they just need to be watched! Their personalities are so
changeable, neither 1 seems to remain dominant for very long..everything
is a game! Our new neighbor has a young boy about 8yrs. and they
love it when he comes to the fence to greet them in the am! Any friends
that come over are greeted with enthusiasm, they have yet to meet a
"baby" so we'll see. So far the only thing they bark at is
anything outside the fence that's unfamiliar unfortunately that still
includes a lot! A trip to the Vet is coming for an evaluation of
their Medical issues. I will update ASAP.

Cinnamon & Nutmeg have
been with us here for 2 weeks now & boy have they found their legs! They
absolutely love tearing around the old oak tree in our front yard at
Warp speed! Our front yard is all fenced in so they can really
stretch their legs. Of course they need to be seriously toweled
down afterwards & the grass will never be the same! My gardens are
a source of interesting adventures & I am constantly shooing them away
from the bedding plants! Our neighbor who is an Arborist came over and
checked out the yard and assured us that the only plants in the yard
that were dangerous were my potted Poinsettias so of course they had to
go! The girls love to be held & cuddled, but still very few
kisses...more like nuzzles! Cinnamon likes to sleep on her back
with all 4 paws in the air! Nutmeg has established herself as
clown-in charge! Both girls are now sitting on command,& I
think they finally are starting to get the idea of their individual
names, still calling 1 will usually get 2-for-1!Dinner is still a shared
affair & we have to watch to make sure that they both get enough..[50lbs
last week!] We will update with Pictures as soon.
8/8/06 - I am so
proud of the progress the girls are making. They have adapted so nicely
and naturally to life in a home, after their neglected start on the
farm. Words cannot explain how much joy these two have brought to our
lives since they’ve been here the last month, even despite a rough start
with the crating problems. We have a small 2-bdrm place without a fenced
yard, and we have two boxers already, but if any of those circumstances
were different, we would keep these two. We are totally in love.
The girls are doing beautifully with housebreaking, making the
occasional mistake but usually when we forget that their skills aren’t
as polished as our dogs’ and that they need to go out more frequently.
They are also doing great with our two dogs. Even our queen bee Willow
has started playing with them because they are so much fun and just want
to play. They are total clowns and really let their personalities show
through. They are so silly and adorable, certainly more boisterous than
I had initially thought, though my no means is their energy
unmanageable. I still think that they would be happiest to live together
in their forever home. Though they have taken to our dogs and to us,
they are like shadows of each other. They don’t do anything without the
other, including going for walks, eating and crating.
The most impressive new update, however, is the improvement with their
health. My fiancé and I both independently today noticed that their
coats look SO much healthier than when they came to us a month ago. The
photos on their site now are the “old” dogs! They don’t have those dark
balding patches of skin anymore. All their hair is coming back in very
nicely, much more full than when they first arrived. They have probably
put on a couple pounds apiece also. We’ll need to get photos of the new
and improved Cinnamon and Nutmeg on there soon. They are just too
precious.

Cinnamon wants the world to know
that she loves to sit on command! It's her favorite new thing to
do. Next up will be "shake"!
8/1/06 -
YAY!!
Cinnamon is still with us and has been doing MUCH better. We put her and
Nutmeg in the same
crate and she has had NO ACCIDENTS in there since crating them together
about a week ago. The crate is now on our main floor, where our two guys
are loose when we're gone and the girls stay in the crate. We've had no
mishaps whatsoever with this set-up. So Cinnie will not need a
stay-at-home family, as we thought before, but only if she and Nutmeg
end up in the same home.
Cinnamon is getting much better about making mistakes in the house. When
we go outside for walks, she squats immediately - she's getting the hang
of the outdoor bathroom.
Cinnie has learned "sit", as long as there are treats involved. She's a
sharp one!
She and her sister continue to do great here with us. They have really
learned that we are here to love and care for them. They are both very
different dogs from the quiet, removed, shy girls that came into lives a
few weeks ago... and they couldn't be happier with their change of luck.
You've never met two sweeter boxers.
7/28/06 -
We did seem to find
somewhat of a solution to Cinnie's crating problem - we put both girls
in the same crate. It completely solved her craziness in the crate - she
doesn't even go to the bathroom in there when Nutmeg's in the same
one... and she's not trying to get out at the risk of hurting herself.
Strange solution, but it works. Luckily they're both small dogs so they
fit together just fine.
I wanted to post the same info for Cinnie that I posted for Nutmeg a few
days ago... Both girls are quite decent on the leash. They aren't leash
trained per se, but don't pull much at all. They just want to sniff.
They never ever bark at passers-by, whether they are people, dogs,
bikes, cars, whatever. They ride very well in the car too, though they
don't like loading up (I think the back of my Subaru reminds them of
those crates they detest so much!). After that though, they're happy to
ride around and see the world from the back window!
The other important thing I wanted to tell everyone is that the girls
are not wanderers at all. Both have escaped from our house at various
points but just plot around in the back yard. They don't want to go
ANYWHERE away from us, but they just don't like being confined. And
while I wouldn't say they totally know their names, they are very
responsive to our tone of voice now. High-pitched chipper voices get
them to come trotting over to us, whether they're in the house or
outside (we've even let them outside in our unfenced yard w/out the
leash, one at a time of course). And of course as I've mentioned before,
the sharp NO stops them from making in the house, jumping up, getting in
the trash, etc. Oh, and Cinnie is really starting to understand the "sit
for food" idea!!
She will be the very best friend her forever family will ever have!!

It is with mixed
feelings that I share the latest news about Cinnamon. She will go to a
new foster
home this weekend. We are going to miss her SO much, but she really
needs to be in a home where
someone is at home most of the day due to her unhappiness in the crate.
Her new foster mom will be
able to help her lots I'm sure!! I hope she and Nutmeg don't miss each
other too much - they'll
both need lots of love from their humans. :)

Cinnamon and Nutmeg
went to the vet on Friday. They received their vaccinations and got
tested for heartworm and mange. Their heartworm tests came back negative
(!), but their mange is still active and they have a very mild case of
tapeworms. They are being treated for both. I want to make sure that
everyone knows that they have demodectic mange -
that is the non-contagious type. They don't require any special
handling for this condition; just some oral medicine once a day. As for
the tapeworm, it is possible to pass to other pets and people if the
feces is ingested, however the vet assured me it is rather difficult to
pass around. The vet confirmed that the girls are between 1yr and 1 1/2
years old... and likely still growing. They both weighed in at 47lbs,
though the vet and I both agreed that they could use a couple extra
pounds.
Both girls are starting to get the hang of going to the bathroom
outside, though they still make plenty of mistakes in the house. We'll
keep working away at it, though it is difficult because they simply
detest the crates and seem to make a mess in there partially because of
their unhappiness about being in the crates.
We have allowed the girls to have free range of our main floor when
we're home. In fact, I've been sleeping on the futon in our living room
w/ them, and they literally pile on top of me and try to squeeze each
other out of the way to get the position closest to me. I couldn't bare
to have them in the crates overnight - they're just too sweet and eager
to love and be loved... and they are so miserable in there all day, I
figure a mess or two in our living room is worth letting them sleep
happily and peacefully throughout the night with the human love they
were deprived of for their first year of life.
They are happy as can be to play with our dogs and be a part of the
family. Words cannot describe the love these two dogs have in their
hearts. They only want to give and receive love. They are so sweet and
gentle. These two have really outstanding dispositions.
7/20/06 - We have puppies!
We’ve been talking about Cinnamon and Nutmeg being 2-3 years old, but
these girls have really large paws for their little bodies, so I
wouldn’t be surprised if they are less than 2 and still growing. When
they go to the vet I’ll ask their opinion… but their true age may not
reflect their actions – these two act like true puppies! Click here to
read about Cinnamon's sister, Nutmeg. The
2 girls would love to continue living together if someone wanted to
adopt them both.
Cinnamon and Nutmeg are liter mates. They are good pals w/ one another
but appear to be branching out quite nicely. Despite their sad life
before BAR, they are sweet, happy pups. If it weren’t for the mange,
you’d never know they had a tough start to life. They both have
extremely sound temperaments. Their dispositions are 100% boxer, though
both seem to be quite docile for their age. But as they are getting more
comfortable with us, they are showing more excitement. The first couple
times we walked over to their crates, they just stared at us
dumbfounded. Now they are all wiggles, jumps and scratches, just waiting
to get out and smother us with sweet love. They just adore human
affection.
Both girls still have mange, though they go to the vet tomorrow to
determine whether it’s still active. They will need their vaccinations
and will need to be spayed at some point as well. My hope is that the
vet ok’s them for their vaccinations tomorrow.
The girls aren’t crate trained and don’t like being in there too much.
They never bark in there, but they fight going in, and Cinnamon got
herself out once. I’ve only heard them bark a few times from the crate,
usually after they hear my dogs barking upstairs. They never bark when
riding in the back of the car, while playing, etc. They appear not to be
big barkers, but I suppose that could change as they grow more
comfortable with us.
The girls will need to learn lots of manners, but appear to be quick
learners. One sharp “no” keeps them off the furniture, even though they
watch our dogs hop all over the couches. They are starting to learn
“sit” also. They love their treats, which certainly helps make training
easier! However, the poor little girls have never lived inside before,
and they have no idea not to soil their crates (or our carpets)! They’ve
made several monumental messes the last couple days. So far Nutmeg has
been much better about keeping the crate clean than Cinnamon, but we’ll
see what the next few days have in store. Nutmeg is also a bit less
persistent than Cinnamon so far – she is a bit quieter, more responsive
to “no”, etc.
The girls have spent quite a bit of time with my dogs now. My Rubin is a
big, bouncy, forceful player, and the girls were hesitant to play with
him at first. But they quickly warmed up and now Cinnamon swats and
darts, while Nutmeg runs around and takes a somewhat more passive role.
When the three of them play, I try to keep my little Willow separate, as
she is prone to starting fights with seemingly little instigation, and I
just don’t want to put the pups through what I call “Willow’s Wrath”.
The girls have had absolutely no problems with my dogs so far.
The girls share food and drink dishes with each other. They have no food
aggression with each other or with me. Nutmeg gave a small warning
signal to Rubin yesterday when he approached her bowl, but it was
nothing of concern.
These girls are very sweet. With some training, they will be amazing
young dogs!!
