It's been
quite a while since I posted. Pete is doing so awesome-we've learned so
much about dog behavior and how to handle him. We've become great
friends with our dog trainer and he and his wife now hang out with us.
He has a few clients in our area and when he does he pops in for an
impromptu visit and quick training session. Really keeps me on my toes
and keeps that training in check.
I have attached a cute picture of Pete lounging in our garden. And yes
he is chubby-we have a hard time keeping weight off of him despite a
diet change and 5-6 miles a day!
The cat keeps him in place but he's not sure what to do with our baby
chickens. I think he's afraid of them! They peep and he runs!

Thought I would send
along a few pic's of Pete. We just planted our garden and Pete decided
to lay with the tomatoes. He was laying in the sun but wouldn't move
when I tried to nudge him. He had the prime tomato planting site.
Actually it was nice and muddy where he was laying.
He is doing so awesome. Took him for a hike on Saturday. He was off
leash, met a yellow lab, sniffed him and kept running with the kids.
Today, the neighbors black lab from up the road wandered in the yard.
Pete was whining and barking in the fenced area so I opened the gate and
let him play. The two dogs just ran and ran and then laid in the grass
next to each other "kissing" or maybe they were just licking drool off
of each other. The neighbor made his way down but the dogs were not
happy to lose each other or have their play time broken up. Another day.
2/4/08 - Hi all, I just wanted to post a
link. Our trainer was out again today working with Pete. We have only
had Pete for 2 months and he has made remarkable progress although we
know we have a long way to go. Today
Pete was able to lie down in the driveway next to Jeff's (our trainer)
german shepherd. Actually it was a highly aggressive dog he was working
with for a client.
In March we will be at the Providence Civic Center for the pet show
doing a demo with Jeff and our 3 kids. Much work to do until then.
Pete is still aggressive toward other dogs but has made remarkable
progress. We even got some nub wagging during today's session which is
huge for our boy. He is trying so hard and we love him to death.
Next week we hit the busy town of Providence, RI for more work with
dogs, people, skateboards, the works. It is our final session with Jeff
but most likely we will sign on for another 6 or 8 sessions. Pete still
needs much more work and having Jeff's advice and calm demeanor has been
invaluable to us.
The pictures on Jeff's blog are of my youngest son Tae working Pete with
basic commands. The 3 kids are working very hard (as our we) in getting
Pete socialized and used to other dogs. We are hoping to someday foster
for BAR but know we have a ways to go. The training has been invaluable
for both Pete and for us.

We picked Pete up yesterday and we
just wanted to let you know what a sweet dog he is. Our entire
family has fallen in love with this goofy guy and he has settled in
so easily. Pete is a very easy going dog. We had almost a 4 hour
ride home yesterday and he was great in the car.
He did have some diarrhea and has been drinking tons of water. He is
also very thin (needs to gain about 10 pounds) and had fleas so has
had his first bath-he loved it.. We ran him into the vet and all
checked out well although the vet wanted to deworm him again and
gave him 3 days of an antibiotic just to cover everything.
I know the foster family said he was not good at the vet but he was
so sweet to everyone and was a perfect gentleman! He whines when he
needs to go out and has had no accidents. Pete is quickly learning
that he's not going to get away with much here. Last night he slept
in our room (he hates the crate) in a chair-slept all night and not
a peep out of him.
He is indifferent to the cats. Could care less where they are
although the cats aren't too sure at this point.
He loves the kids and covers them all the time with big boxer
kisses.
He knows some commands but doesn't always listen so we are working
on that. He's very smart and mostly all it takes is just an ahh -ahhh
to correct him. He's so easy.
We will send more formal updates but we just wanted to tell you all
and BAR how pleased and blessed we are to have Pete with us.

This is Pete's step mom. I
wanted to add an update to Pete's profile. We thought we had a
home
for this energetic boy, but the family was a little turned off by his
Enthusiasm. He's a great boy, very loving and a cuddle bunny if I
ever met one. Loves people, kids and cats! Although he is 4
years old, he acts just like a puppy and can get very excited easily.
We are working on manners with Pete for the time being. He's very
smart and easily bribed by treats. I have no doubt that Pete will
make a special family out there very happy.

Hi, this is Pete
again. I just wanted to give an update on how well I'm doing.
I'm having fun running and playing in the yard with my new friend though
sometimes in the morning Mom has a hard time getting me out into the
crisp, chilly air. Once it warms up a bit, you can't stop me.
I love to chase the cats a bit too, just to get their blood running, but
I'm always very good to them. Well that's it for now. I'll
check in next week.

Hi my name is Pete
and I'm a very friendly, energetic guy. I live in a home where
there is another dog that I love to play around with and two small
children whom I treat very well. I love to play around in the yard
and would love to go to a home that would have a playmate for me.
I get along well with all the humans I meet and can't wait to find my
forever home. Do you have the home I've been waiting for?
From BAR's Intake Liaison:
Pete has been around kids (one is 2, one is 5). He lived with a
Pomeranian and also hung out with a Bernese Mountain Dog owned by
owner's parents. So he is fine with both big and small dogs. And he also
lived with a cat. He tries to play, but the cat doesn't like to play.
When owner wasn't home, he stayed in a crate or in kitchen. He can't
have 'run of the house' when no one is home. When they were home, dog
had run of the house. He likes to be around people.
From Pete's owners:
Pete is very affectionate and loves to cuddle on the couch or in bed if
you let him. He thinks he is a big lap dog. He acts very young for
his age and has a lot of energy so he needs an owner that can walk him
and keep up with him.
