11/15/08 - Layla has been adopted

11/7/08 - Layla is pending adoption on 11/15/08

11/5/08 - Layla has really started to come out of her shell. She is very playful and loves playing with our boxer Mugsy. She has also started playing with toys. She has been given more freedom in the house but she has had a few accidents, although she did make it by the door. She seems to be much less skittish and is even warming up to my husband. She is a bit stubborn and needs correcting now more often, such as continuing to try to get up on the couch. She does jump up a bit, but we have been working on sit and down, so she is getting better. She has expressed some interest in the cats now, and tries to play with them. They do not want any part and so she barks at them to try to get them to play with her. She is a snuggler, and likes to give kisses. She seems to really like being around people.  Even when she is eating, she wants someone nearby. She is doing okay in the crate, but needs some major encouragement to go into it. She settles down fairly quickly, especially at bedtime.  She went on an overnight trip with me upstate, and did very well in the car.  She will need some basic training but is overall a real sweetheart!

10/29/08 - Layla continues to do very well here- she is our first foster and makes it seem very easy! She still has not had any accidents, and is beginning to really settle in. She is still very fearful of loud noises, as she is still getting used to being inside of a house. She is doing very well in her crate. She lets out a few whimpers after she goes in, but then sleeps through the night without a peep. She goes into it on her own when she feels like napping but only when I am in the room (her crate is in our office.) She is a bit of a shadow and likes to nuzzle up to me when she is scared.  She is still afraid of my husband and immediately runs behind me when he is around. We are trying to have him feed her and take her out, to establish some good connections with him.  She has shown a little more interest in the cats, but not in a bad way. She seems to have bonded with our boxer Mugsy, and they play very nicely together. I have to say that if I were able to, I would make Layla an addition to our family in a heartbeat! Get in those applications for this little cutie pie! She will make some lucky family very happy!

10/26/08 - Layla arrived here yesterday from Caryn's and is adjusting nicely. She is such a sweetheart, and is very easy-going. For the time being, we are using gates to keep her and one of our dogs apart, at no fault of Layla's. Our boy Tiki has trouble making "friends" but she is getting along great with our 100 lb. mush of a boxer, Mugsy. She has had absolutely no interest in our two cats. She seems to be a little timid around men, and cowers when she hears my husband's voice. She met my mother-in-law today and was all wiggles and kisses to her. She is doing well with the crate. She likes to go in by herself to sleep, with the door open, but when we leave her in it alone and leave the room she does cry a bit. Last night she cried for about 20 mins but then settled down. She has had no accidents yet, which is amazing considering she was outside for 3 years! I have been keeping the leash on her outside, even when she has free run of the yard, just because she doesn't respond to come yet. She is a little skittish about noises, or fast movements. She is very hesitant to come inside after being outside, probably since she was never actually allowed inside. She will come in though if we walk with her on the leash. She is very curious about everything in the house but after sniffing around awhile loves to cuddle up and give kisses. She is eating and drinking well. Stay tuned for more updates about this adorable little girl!

10/24/08 - What a sweetie this girl is and tiny too!  I think she is only about 40 pounds?  She is so lovable and gentle - what an amazing dog she will be with a little training and love.  She has yet to have an accident in the house and I have done a few little tests while she's around.  She doesn't get up on furniture, doesn't beg when we are eating, and likes sleeping in the crate - in fact she goes in on her own to nap!  I do have to give her bottom a little shove to get her in when I want her in, but nothing bad.  She was in there today and while she'll whine for about 5 minutes, she settles in and is fine hanging out in there for the remainder of the time.  If I was in the market for a new pup, I would seriously consider spending the time to train her and keep her.  I can't believe how great she is for a dog that never spent time indoors.  She is full of wiggles and kisses and just wants to hang out with us.  I'll miss her even though she'll only be here a few days before she gets to her new foster home!

10/23/08 - I didn't put Layla in the crate last night.  I was alone (my husband worked) and I had forgotten to ask him to move the crate before he left - with my back I can't do it and didn't want to scrub carpeting in case she decided to 'go' in there...I kept her in the laundry room (linoleum floors) and she did fantastic!  She whined a bit at first - but I think she then realized it was warm and she had a bed.  I had to practically drag her out of it this morning.  She did not go to the bathroom in the house - but I made sure she was on empty before I went to bed!!  I walked her this morning, she did her thing and that was it.  She really wants to check out the house - but I didn't have time, so we'll go through that tonight when mu husband is home.

10/22/08 - Well our little friend Layla will be warm, clean, and flea free tonight!!! I took her to Petco for a bath on our way home - the fleas were out of control and I could not bring myself to bring her into my house as filthy as she was.    As it is, I had to buy spray for the car to de-flea it (hopefully)!  Layla is a very cute, petite, lovely little girl with adorable spots all over her little bottom and back legs!!  I am surprised she is as well adjusted as she is for being outdoors all the time - seemingly alone.  She gives lots of kisses already and wiggles too.  This poor girl has been outside for 3 years, therefore not housebroken, so she is in VERY limited space right now.   So anyway - she has now met my 3 year old female Molly and she is fine with her.  They checked each other out between baby gates first, then sniffed each other out for a few minutes and both seemed to just move on.  The house where she was had a daycare run out of it and several small grand kids around often - so she is apparently great with children - while I have only had a few hours with her, I believe it.  She is such a sweetheart.  I'll keep you posted for the next couple of days and look forward to hearing about her progress in her foster home!
