BOXER ANGELS
RESCUE BOOK LIBRARY
Boxer Angels Rescue has compiled a list of books full of
information for new or prospective Boxer owners. If you’re looking for more
information about the Boxer breed, getting ready for your new family member,
training (including Canine Good Citizen, agility and therapy dog training),
helping your Boxer adjust, care and health, and the human/dog bond, you’ll
find recommendations here.
Please help Boxer Angels Rescue by using the links on this
page to build your Boxer library. When you buy a book after following any of
these links, Amazon.com will donate a portion of the cost of the book to BAR,
which will help fund veterinary care, food, and transports for the dogs. You can
keep helping BAR by shopping for books, music and videos in the same shopping
session, because additional purchases will add to the profits BAR receives.

If You Love Me
by Louise Bernikow
A touching story
about Libro, a brindle Boxer rescued from Riverside Park by a woman who never
would have dreamed she'd become a dog lover. We've met Libro in our wanderings
on the Upper West Side. What a sweetheart!
BOXER CARE AND BREED INFORMATION
The
Boxer Handbook
(Barron's Pet Handbooks)
by Joan Hustace Walker
Excellent book on history, traits, care, health, behavior, and more. Includes an
entire chapter on Boxer rescue and adoption!
Boxers
For Dummies
by Richard Beauchamp
Surprisingly excellent. This book skimps on the pretty pictures in favor of LOTS
of practical advice, including very good medical sections (including
instructions for preparing an emergency kit, and one of the surprisingly few
books -given the frequency of Boxer skin issues-- talk about dermatological
health), ten reasons to get a Boxer, training and (especially first-week)
adjustment advice, and a small section on Boxer rescue.
Boxers:
Everything About Housing, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, and Health Care (Complete
Pet Owner's Manual)
by Johanna Thiel, Chris Pinney, Renate Holzner
The language in this book is a bit stuffy, but it has extensive feeding and
nutrition information, including a section on home-prepared meals. Tips on
dog-proofing your home. Also a list of pet insurance websites. The author breeds
Boxers, so naturally there is nothing in this book targeted to rescue owners.
This book is published by Barrons, which has other good books on Boxers as well.
Boxer:
An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet
by Stephanie Abraham
Your
Boxer's Life:
Your Complete Guide to Raising Your Pet from Puppy to Companion (Solid
Information Pet Owners Can Trust)
By Kim D.R. Dearth
Dr.
Ackerman's Book of the Boxer
by Lowell Ackerman
Fairly basic dog care advice that happens to have Boxer pictures.
Guide
to Owning a Boxer:
Puppy Care, Health, Feeding, Training, Showing, Breed Standard
by Patti Rutledge
Good on history. Much more on showing than will be relevant to rescue owners,
little on practical information.
A
New Owner's Guide to Boxers
by Richard K Tomita
More for people interested in showing, not much practical information. The breed
history does include photos of some of the first Boxers --who were white or
mostly white.
The
Boxer
by Anna Katherine Nicholas
Breed history around the world --lots on famous show Boxers. Not so relevant for
rescue owners but interesting for breed history.
DOG RESCUE
Save
That Dog: Everything You Need to Know About Adopting a Purebred Rescue Dog
by Liz Palika
Unfortunately, this book does not include Boxers, but it is an excellent guide
to the challenges and rewards of adopting a rescue dog. It includes moving
stories of rescued dogs and their new owners.
Second
Start: Creative Rehoming for Dogs
by Jacqueline F. O'Neil
Training, testing a dog's temperament, preparing for a rescue dog's arrival.
TRAINING
Training
Your Boxer (Training Your Dog Series)
by Joan Hustace Walker
We own this one, and while lots of it is information that applies to any breed,
there are special sections on Boxer history and characteristics, as well as on
training deaf Boxers, agility and Schutzhund
How
to Train Your Boxer
by Liz Palika
The Monks of New
Skete breed and train German Shepherds, but they do a great job of
talking about training issues for any dog. They have two excellent books:
How
to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners
(Revised & Updated Edition)
and
The
Art of Raising a Puppy
The
Other End of the Leash
by Patricia B. McConnell
I haven't read this one yet, but everyone in the dog park raves about it.
How
to be the Leader of the Pack...And have Your Dog Love You For It. ("How
to" booklets from Dog's Best Friend)
by Patricia B. McConnell
The
