1/14/07 - Barney has been adopted.

1/10/07 - Barney is pending adoption

12/26/06 - Barney had his x-rays today and it's good news, he does not need surgery.  X-rays showed (4 views were taken) that he does not have the head of the femur on the right rear leg.  He was probably born that way, according to the vet.  The femur, though, is secured in the hipbone and the muscles in that leg are all strong around it.  There is no sign of any arthritis.

We did mention that once in a while we hear a yelp when he is active.  The vet said he has a floating patella in the rear left leg.  When it floats out of place, it can occasionally cause some pain.  It does pop right back into place, so no surgery is recommended.  There was also no signs of arthritis on that leg.  These little problems do not slow Barney down.  He runs, jumps and walks with no problems.  He is energetic and needs to release it.  There are no restrictions on any activity.

Barney is now ready to go to his forever home.  He would love to get special attention (as he is one of 13 dogs here now). Make sure you have lots of toys, and energy to play with him.  Most of all, make sure you like to get your face washed whenever he gets near you.

12/25/06 - It is time to introduce Barney, our latest foster. On Monday, November 27th , we picked “Chin man”, a Japanese Chin (at least we believe he is one), from one of our local shelters. He had just been neutered, but you would never know it, as he came bouncing in here. He met all of our downstairs dogs in “foster land” (6 others) and started playing with them right away. As I am typing this, he is now playing with my boxer.  The size of the dog does not matter; he will play with anyone and anything (his stuffed animal buddies). He loves to initiate play, usually by nipping at the hind quarters of him “play victim” :o)) He also loves to pounce with both his front legs in front of his playmate….”jawing” on then…anything to get them going and keep it going. His temperament is A++++.  He is also a kissey boy, so affectionate.  He loves cuddling in your lap as well.

We noticed that when he would stand on his hind legs, he would not put any weight on his rear right hind leg.  We took him to our vet.  Upon examination, as the vet was trying to move his rear leg back he let out a loud yelp.  X-rays were recommended to rule out a fracture or some other problems.  Since he had a little cough, x-rays could not be done for another 3 weeks. His is now ready for the x-rays and hopefully we will get to the cause of his problem.  He does walk and run without any problems, but you can see a slight favoring of the leg when he is running around, and sometimes, when he is playing rough, he has let out a yelp, almost as if the leg “popped out of it socket” or something. He will then limp for a moment, and then right back to what he was doing.

The vet determined that he was no older than 1 1/2 years old.  He has no other medical issues.  He is approximately 12 1/2 lbs. (he didn't stay still long enough for the digital scale to give an accurate weight). He has a little under bite, which just adds to his cute face.

He is going to need patience in the housetraining issues. We see he has accidents; he pees in the same spot when he does have his accidents, which is by the back door. We are working with him, but it is honestly difficult with as many dogs as we currently have, one on one training is not the easiest thing to do. He does poop outside, and often pee’s outside too, so he knows what to do, but getting him to do it consistently so we could say he is housetrained has not happened yet.

A home where someone would be home most of time is what we are looking for this little guy.  Another dog is not needed, but he would do well with it, as long as it has his energy level and desire to play.  He is a bit “mouthy”, that is when he is playing he does the puppy “nip thing”, so very young children will not be the best situation for him. We also do not know how he would be with cats, although there is not a mean bone in this boy’s body, so it would probably be an issue with how well they figure things out. All this little guy needs is love, attention, and a comfortable lap.

All in all, Barney will be a super addition to any family. He is gorgeous, cute, energetic, playful and loving…what more can you ask for.

We will keep you updated on his x-ray results after they are done, which should be this week.
