1/8/06 -
Its hard to believe that a year has past already. Gizmois doing
great! We still have some problems with his skin
allergies, but found its not food related so no more special diet.
Also found a antihistamine that is helping, still have to use pred every
3 days, but are trying to wean him off that too. Even he and
"Mack" the cat that hadsome problems are working at being able to live
together now. They still watch each other, but will now stay in
thesame room for awhile with no chasing or growling. That isa big
change. Its taken a lot of work and patience but we are finally
getting through it thank
goodness!
He is a very happy boy, loves to play with just about any toy you give
him. Does have a favorite one though that he
carries all over the house waiting for you to throw it for him. We can't
imagine not having Giz in our lives. I still remember the first time I
saw his picture on the web site. I just couldn't forget that face!
I am so grateful you chose us to give him
his forever home.
7/6/05 - A lot has happened since
our last update! First of all we graduated from obedience class, Giz
turned out to be the star of our class! He started having allergy shots.
After the 3rd dose had a reaction, so back to pred, hopefully will be
able to start back up in a couple more weeks. Out of the blue he started
chasing one of our cats. he still loves the oldest one, just not the
boys. Now we have a baby gate up when we aren't home, so the cats have a
safe place. When we are home he drags his leash around. Just
started using a "Super Soaker squirt gun he doesn't like it at all!
We'll keep working on it, things will get better. I'll keep you posted.
4/6/05 - Well, we've had some issues
with our obedience training, with some words of encouragement from Gary
we are working through them. He has been having allergy problems again,
so Friday we go for the testing and hopefully can get to the bottom of
it. Besides all that he seems to be very happy little boy, and keeps
track of all the kids and cars in the neighborhood from his favorite
chair in the livingroom. I think he might even look forward to our class
every week, he even has made new friends there. Everyone loves Gizmo.
and so do we.
3/7/05 - Gizmo has really settled in
now and I think he likes his home. We changed his food and his breathing
is much better so we are on the right track with his allergies. He loves
to play more and more each day, everyday he has a new favorite toy .This
week we start our obedience classes, that will be a new challenge for
both of us. He is even getting more affectionate. Loves to give us
kisses, and even has a new friend (Skipper) our 18 year old cat that
actually rubs up under his chin purring. We can't imagine going home
without he and Sydney there to meet us at the door, sometimes you can't
get the door opened fast enough for Giz, he gets so excited to see us.
Makes it all worth it.
2/7/05 - Its hard to believe that
it's been a month, Gizmo has accepted us as his forever family. His
sister Sydney makes sure he stays in line and doesn't try too much with
the cats. Also had his first experience with the vet. He had an ear
problem (that is now under control) and has even been able to loose a
pound or two with a few to go per the Doc.
The Doctor thinks he may have an allergy so we are changing his food to
see if that helps. He loves to go out in the fenced back yard. He just
sits watching everything. You wonder what he's thinking now that he's in
the country different sights, different sounds. Sometimes he even thinks
his sister should be out there with him, but then there are times he's
perfectly happy to hang out by himself.
We are so grateful that we were the ones chosen to give him his forever
home.
1/9/05 -We had a long ride, Giz sat
on my lap the whole time! We arrived home with fresh snow on the ground.
I didn't know how he would react to it but once he saw his pug sister
walk through it he followed her right out.
Finally deciding it wasn't so bad and starting running in it. It was
pretty deep and he was having a good time.
He is getting along fine with his pug sister, his new cat brothers don't
know what to make of him yet. I never
knew how much it would mean to me to rescue, we couldn't be happier that
Gizmo came into our lives.
1/8/05 - My buddy
Gizmo went home today....and Jacke, you were
right....SUPER family for him!!! On the floor for 1 hr with him :o)
They both drove down yesterday, (from the Rochester area) stayed over at a
hotel in the area, and came this morning at 9:30 am...stayed for 1 hr
plus, and back off to Rochester he went. He loved them...let me tell you.
And with a pug sister waiting for him, this boy is gonna have the time of
his life.
11/21/04 - WOW...are we overdue for
an update on this cutie. Let's get caught up.
Gizmo is now neutered, and he is doing fine. His skin condition is now a
thing of the past, and his hair has grown in very nicely in the area where
he has none. You would almost not know he ever had that nasty yeast
infection.
For a young boy, Gizmo is very quiet and reserved. He seems to prefer
middle to light activity levels. He is getting along with all the dogs,
and is eating beautifully. He has filled out, and turned into a very
solidly built boy.
He is all set and ready for his forever home, as we continue to look for
that "just right" home for him. We are sure he will not be here much
longer :o))
9/25/04 - We got a call from one of
our favorite shelters about Gizmo. He was picked up by animal control as a
stray, and had some sort of a skin condition that needs to be attended to.
His hold period was up, so we went and picked him up, and the next day got
him into our vet.
Gizmo has an advanced yeast infection under his neck, and it has spread to
the top of his neck, and some parts of his ears. A skin scraping for mange
mites came back negative. He also has an ear infection in both ears. Poor
Gizmo, he obviously was not very well cared for. That is all changing now.
We got a special shampoo for the yeast infection, and also medication for
his ears. We were instructed to give him a bath with the special shampoo
2x weekly, and a special "flush" liquid 3x's daily for the infected area.
They feel in approx 1-2 months the yeast infection will be gone.
The area that has been affected has very little hair left, has gross
crusty material all around it, and the skin has become thickened and
rougher. The vet referred to this as "elephant skin", and said it is quite
possible that the hair will not grow in fully in the infected area once he
is totally rid of the infection.
It is not contagious, so we have introduced Gizmo to the crew, and he is a
very happy boy, getting to know all the dogs and people in the house. He
has met all the boxers and pugs in the house, and enjoys all their
company. He loves playing with Rancho (who seems to like him) and well as
Hugsly and Jewels, his foster brother and sister. He is a very sweet boy.
The vet feels he is under 2, probably 1 1/2 at the oldest. He checked out
fine, and agreed with the shelter about not neutering him until his skin
condition is cleared up.
He has a absolutely wonderful appetite. He is a bit on the thin side, so
we have been feeding him 2 cubs daily, with some American cheese and
hamburger added in. He does not leave a drop over :o))
I don't think he will be here for long. I also don't think he will be with
us once he is medically cleared, so get those apps in quickly on this boy.
