9/17/04 - Gus, the pug i pulled from my local shelter on Saturday, passed away peaceably in his sleep sometime during the nite.  I put him in his crate last nite at midnite, and went to let him out this morning at 5am, and he was gone.:o(
He was really a sweet old guy, and I'm glad we got to spend some time with him. I feel better knowing that he got to spend some time being pampered and loved, instead of standing and sleeping on that cold concrete floor in the shelter.
Maybe his previous owners knew he was sick, and didn't want to deal with him, i don't know.
Just give Gus a nice thought as he passes to the bridge, where he will be young again, have his sight, and be playing with all our loved pets that are there waiting for us.
Goodbye Gus, i am glad i got to know you for a bit.

9/11/04 - Today we learned of Gus from one of our favorite shelters. Gus has been there since 8/25/04. There wasn't much interest in Gus. You see, Gus is an approximately 10 yr old male pug who is totally blind. Not too many people looking to add a dog like Gus to their family.  We took Gus home today. The 1st thing we had to do was to give Gus a bath. I don't think I have smelled a dog that was worse then what I smelled on the car ride home. Poor boy.
He was brought into the shelter by people who claimed they found him wandering around. Hard to believe, if you watched this dog, you would know there was no way this boy could wander off. These people were without question the owners of Gus.
We will take Gus to the vet this week for a checkup. He has to have his anal gland expressed, for sure, and his mouth needs some work. I would not be surprised is he needs a few teeth pulled, as he does have very bad breath.
He is eating well, and has a very sweet disposition. He is pretty solid, I estimate him to weigh about 30 lbs. I have taken him into the yard, and he walks around and around. When he bumps into something, he just changes directions. The more time he spends in the yard, the more he will learn his way around. He has spent some time in the downstairs (AKA foster land) and is finding his way around. From the looks of things, it appears that he can not even see shadows, I believe he is TOTALLY blind.
Watch for further updates on Gus, as we will do our next update after his vet visit. Wish him luck.
