2/5/05 - After 7 months, my little buddy has gone home. He was my longest foster, but thanks to Sue and her offer to drive all the way to MA to do this HV, I know we have found the right home for him :o))
His new dad is a retired college professor, with plenty of time to spend with his new baby. He actually came to the house not knowing which dog he was going to adopt, Hugsly or Pugsly, and said the dogs would pick him.
Well, as soon as he walked into foster land (my downstairs), Hugsly took over....and the match was made. They will be very happy together, I have no doubt...
And not to worry, Pugsly has a home that is going to get him next weekend (this family said they would be happy with either one)....and when we told them who it turned out to be...they were thrilled.

11/15/04 - We are really long overdue in updating our "huggerman". Hugsly is such a character, he really makes me laugh. He has this personality that he's this big bad tough boy, willing to stand up to any dog, big or small, and then I see him playing with my daughters 7 month old pug, who has been staying with us for a few months, while she undergoes another round of demodectic mange treatments. Every one and every thing is her personal play toy, and when she "starts" with Hugsly, he is perfectly happy to play silly games with her. Here I thought he might have a short temper, being that he is a bit older, and finding her way of playing a bit annoying (which I could see how it would be, since she never knows when to stop :o)) but now, he plays right along with her, and he definitely enjoys her puppy enthusiasm. He enjoys picking up stuffed animals and carrying them around and playing with them. He can be a bit annoying with his habit of standing at the top of the stairs of my entrance from the down stairs and acting totally intimidating to all of my dogs....this like "who is brave enough to cross my path to go do their business" after they have all eaten. He usually makes sure he is the 1st one out after eating so he can "assume" the position at the top of the stairs. I have to tell him to "knock it off, no nipping", as he tries to nip at the heals of any dog making a break for potty time :o)) I mean, this is a total joke, as my boxers outweigh him by a substantial amount, and could easily run right past him.... but he has them intimidated :o))
At night, when i take all the dogs out for their last bathroom break Hugsly is really funny. It is usually around 11:30-12pm, and it is pretty quite outside, and there is often a small plane way up in the sky, lights blinking as it moves along slowly.... and Hugsly always notices the lights (and maybe even hearing a noise that i am not), and takes a stance and gently barks at it.... letting the plane know he knows it's up there, and don’t try sneaking down her :o)) Like I said, this guy is way too cute.
He loves to play with people, and whenever we have people over, they look at him and get down on the floor and start "messing" with him, and he loves it. When I tell them how old he is, they are really surprised...they all say...."WOW...this spunky boy is about 8?"
He has certainly settled in very well here, and could stay with us forever, but I would like to see him have more direct attention, which a home with fewer dogs them us can give him.
So, if you like what you hear, give this guy a chance to show you what a super boy he is. Trust me, this guy is NOT old...he's got PLENTY of life left in him. You'll see :o))

9/22/04 - Hugsly has actually been a guest here since July. A shelter that had picked him up as a stray called us, as they felt that he was too aggressive to place on their own, so they preferred to place him with a rescue.

An aggressive pug? Well, I had not met one yet, so I told them we would take him into rescue, no problem. They certainly had my curiosity.

We went to the shelter to pick him up, and the volunteer tried to show me the "aggression". They put some food down, and then tried to put their hands near the bowl, but Hugsly showed no interest in the food, so they could not duplicate the behavior they were trying to show me, however, if it was food aggression he had, I certainly would see that for myself.

The 1st thing you notice when you see Hugsly is that he walks with an unnatural gait. He appears to have some sort of an injury that causes him to walk "funny". It is not a limp, but he sways a bit when he walks. We took him to our vet, who took 3 sets of x rays, and there is no injury to the spine that is visible, so he feels it may have been something from a long time ago that might have happened to one of his legs or something. He suggested at Hugsly's age, estimated to be 7 to 8 yrs old, to just leave it alone. He is not in any pain.. He gets around fine, can go up and down stairs, he just won't be your jogging partner. Although, don't tell that to Hugsly, as he thinks he can be one. When I take the dogs for a walk, Hugsly insists on tagging along, and he tries to keep up, but he tends to fall behind a bit :o))

Hugsly is a spunky boy. After evaluating him for the last few months, it is not food aggression he has. I would say he has a short "temper" sometimes, and if one of the dogs gets to be too much for him, or he is just not in the mood, he puts on this real macho routine, barking and chasing them away from him. Since he is not the fastest car on the freeway, he is not too hard to avoid by the other dogs, even the other pugs. When you tell him to "knock it off", he does. I have seen NO problems in picking him up and handling him as much as I want to.

We thought we had a home set up for him, but that has fallen thru, so we are putting Hugsly up on the site.

This guy has been "hanging" with boxers, pugs, and a shar pei, who is usually short on tolerance for new dogs, and he gets along with them fine. He is more then happy to get a bit spunky, and sometimes when the pugs gang up on one of the boxers, he is more then happy to join the pug gang. Very cute. He stands and barks at the boxer they have picked out to harass, and when given the opportunity, when the boxer is distracted, he sneaks around and nips at their ankle, and gives this menacing stance like "hey, bring it on...you got a problem...you want some of this....I don't think so" :o)))

He has a wonderful appetite, but since I consider him a bit on the chunky side, we have been careful about how much he eats.

Beside his walking problem, he is in good health. His heart is strong, lungs clear, and eyes are also nice and clear. He has some gray on the muzzle. He is not a big kisser, but he is a pleasure to have around, and loves to have the back of his ears rubbed.

He has not had pee accidents in the house, but does occasionally have poop accidents. I believe he does not always know when he has to go, with would be consistent with other dogs I have fostered that have has some sort of injury or trauma to the spine. He does go outside to do his business (both one and two), but 2 sometimes sneaks up on him in the house.

If you are looking for a low activity pug (yes, there is a such thing :o)), please fill out an app, and ask for Hugsly by name.
