Jewels (A.K.A. Emma, we renamed
her) is still doing great. We have recently moved from NY to Arizona and
she loves her new home. We drove with 2 dogs and 2 cats in our truck
across the country. She was not happy to be in the car for 4 days, but
she had fun chasing our cats in the hotel rooms at night. Emma is so
happy to be away from the cold and NY snow!!!!Now, she can run around
outside most of the year and she keeps cool inside during the hot summer
months. She even went swimming in our new pool!
3/17/05 -Jewels is doing outstanding
in her new home. She gets along with all of the animals, especially Ella
our other dog. They play together all day long. Jewels tries to scare
the cats by chasing them around the house, but they just look at her and
continue on with their business. She is the most lovable and playful
dog. She follows her mom around everywhere. She snuggles with me any
opportunity she gets. She loves her toys and all of her new animal
friends. Thank you so much for the opportunity to love and care for her.
Our family would not be complete without her! Thanks, Jennifer and
Patrick.
10/13/04 -The family who adopted
Jewels just lover her to death...have called the former foster home twice
already to tell them how happy they are with her. To the right are
some pictures of Jewels in her new home.
10/10/04 - Jewels
has been adopted.
10/7/04 - Jewels went on her very
1st home visit last nite. Of course, she was wonderful, and everyone loved
her. She met the resident 9 yr old pug, and she and he we instant friends.
This was no surprise to
me, as Jewels has been living with lots of dogs over the last few months,
and has no issues with
any of them. She is what I call a "cameleon dog". Her personality changes
to match the company she
keeps. When my oldest daughter brings over her 6 month old rescue pug
girl, this little pup loves
to play rough, typical puppy antics. Biting the ears, jowls, neck, legs,
anything she can get her
mouth on. And Jewels gives it right back to her. And when Jewels spends
time with the older,
mellow boys in the house, she just chills with them. So, last nite when
she met 9 yr old gentleman
Calvin, she kept the activity level lower, but Calvin picked up his energy
level a bit as he was very
excited to meet miss Jewels. Who could blame him, take a look at that
face, who wouldn't fall for
that face :o))) And, of course after I told the family how Jewels is not a
big kisser, she starts
to kiss various members of the family, that little bugger. I think she is
just teasing me, cause
she knows how much I love those pug kisses, so she is holding back on me
:o))
Jewels is not the greatest traveler. I am used to most of the dogs I have
known get pretty excited
to go for a ride, and they usually settle down in the car and look out the
window and amuse
themselves. Jewels seems to be a bit "stressed" in the car, she whines and
cries, and seems a bit on
edge. I'm not sure what to make of it, maybe she has not had good
experiences in the car in her past,
I don't know. She is absolutely wonderful at ALL other times, just not
great in the car.
She continues to have a wonderful appetite, and is a wonderful guest. She
has not had one accident
in the house, which I am very happy about :o)) As we had said, we do not
crate Jewels, she is free
go wherever she likes. She is about as close to perfect as you can get.
Jewels does get possessive of her treats, which since we know about this,
we just keep an eye on
her. She is not "vicious" (how could a pug be? :o)), but she likes to put
the other dogs on notice
that they are hers, and don't think about taking them away from her. This
only happens when she is
relaxing and chewing on a rawhide bone.. She will do these "pre-emptive
strikes", where she will
charge a dog that might be looking at her rawhide as something they might
want to taste. A couple
of times she has done it, Mikey or Hugsly, 2 of her foster brothers have
gone back at her and it is
quickly over. I am not at all worried about this behavior, as it is
infrequent, and more of an
"act" on her part. To show how little I am worried about it, I do not even
remove the rawhide on the
floor. She truly is a very sweet girl, and I will miss that cute mugg when
she goes to her forever
home. That will be some lucky home.
9/24/04 - Jewels has been in her
foster home for almost 2 months now. She was an owner surrender to a
shelter, as the family said they did not have time for her. She also had a
skin condition that turned out to be mange.
When we picked Jewels up from the shelter, we found a VERY cute pug girl,
with some missing patches of fur, and very dark skin on those bald spots.
We brought her right to the vet, and did a skin scraping, and got a
positive test result for mange. She was treated for the mange for 3 weeks,
and we brought her back, and there was still evidence of the mite, so she
was put back on another 3 week treatment. We tested her again, and we
received the 1st negative results. Our policy is to get 2 negative results
before a dog is ready for adoption, so we continued the treatment for
another 3 weeks, and just got our second negative result, so Jewels is all
set to go to her forever home.
In the few months we have been fostering her, we have learned a lot about
Jewels. This girl is a very typical pug, sweet and spunky at the same
time. She loves to play with all dogs, not caring whether they want to
play with her or not :o)). She is sharing fosterland (my downstairs) with
a few pugs and boxers, and she seems to be the ringleader in organizing
the pugs to gang up on one of the boxers. One of her partners in crime is
Hugsly, who you can also read up on at this site. She starts barking and
barking, and runs toward the boxer she has chosen to harass, and if they
flinch and run, she takes off after them like a bat out of hell, barking
the whole way thru. But, as soon as they turn toward her, she stops dead
in her tracks, and it is clear she wants no part of that kind of playing
:o)) Like I said, she is a real character.
She has a wonderful appetite, and has put on a few lbs (maybe a few to
many) since she has arrived. She has not shown herself to be a real big
kisser, but she loves attention, and is a real pleasure to have around.
I can see Jewels fitting in in just about any family situation. She loves
to be around other dogs, and except for a slight "sharing of her rawhide"
with other dogs issue, she is just perfect. When she is munching on her
rawhide, and senses another dog is looking at her, she tries to put on
this big, tough front, and barks and barks at them. I can reach down and
take the rawhide away, with no problems at all. She plays with big and
little dogs alike, and has enjoyed running with another pug visitor, a
little 7 month old rescue pug that my daughter brings over when she
visits.
She enjoys playing with toys, and will playfully toss them in the air and
run around with them. If you pick something up and toss it, she will
gladly get it and bring it back. She particularly loves a game of tug of
war, and will try to get you to play that with her.
Jewels is totally house trained, and came to my home knowing "sit" and
"paw" already.
As you can see, she has been a total pleasure, and we are so glad she is
finally ready for her own forever home. Can you see this girl fitting in
with you? If so, hurry and get those apps in, she won't be around long.
