Rocky has lived with us for one
full year. He was diagnosed over the winter with pancreatitis,
which involved antibiotics and is now being managed by prescription dog
food. Because he is such a
large pug, which is likely what caused his pancreatitis, our
veterinarian felt that it was crucial
that Rocky was placed on a low-fat, high-fiber prescription diet. I am
happy to report that since
January Rocky has lost 5 pounds. He seems happier and more energetic
without the extra weight.
Rocky has recently joined the “Poughkeepsie Pug Group”, though we
haven’t been able to make the
monthly meeting yet which is held the first Saturday of every month. I
am looking forward to next months
meeting. I’m not sure how Rocky will react to all the pugs though; he is
not particularly friendly
towards other dogs. I think he may have become used to being the only
dog in our family and when
he is around other dogs, he feels threatened. He is not vicious, but he
is very hesitant and
anti-social towards other dogs. Yet, he is great around people. He is
even willing to let children play
with his toys with him (not adults) which is surprising considering his
toy possessiveness
problem. We are looking to purchase a home, a ranch, that way Rocky can
sleep on the same level as us. I
feel guilty leaving him downstairs when we go to bed, and Rocky is
unwilling to let me carry him
upstairs. He sits at the top of the stairs crying until I bring him back
down. I’m hoping that in
the near future we have a one level home that way Rocky can be near us
all the time.

Rocky is doing great. He is a
happy boy. Rocky has a great personality which develops more and more
each day. He is still very cautious of stairs, when going down, he hugs
he wall. He won’t go up stairs if there are more than 4 or 5 steps. I’ve
tried carrying him upstairs in my home but he cries until I bring him
back down. Rocky loves his toys. I (secretly) threw away his disgusting
hamburger. He doesn’t seem to miss it. He prefers soft toys. He has a
soft skunk, raccoon and football which he absolutely loves. The plastic
toys, such as his kong, he doesn’t seem to play with any
longer. The tennis ball is still a favorite of his. As far as I can tell
Rocky has not lost any more weight, despite feeding him a lien diet.
Regardless, he is a beautiful pug. When decorating my home for
Christmas, in the center of the fireplace mantel, I hung a stocking for
Rocky. I can’t wait to fill it with tasty treats for Christmas.
6/20/05 - Rocky has lived in his
new home for almost one month. He has adjusted very well. Approximately
three weeks ago Rocky went to the veterinarian for a “well check”. At
that time he weighed 41.5 pounds. At minimum, Rocky was 10 pounds
overweight. Since our trip to the veterinarian, Rocky has lost 2 pounds.
As of Saturday, he weighed 39.5. Rocky seems happier already. He is more
energetic and,
on walks, he is beginning to walk me.
Rocky is obsessive when it comes to toys. We are working on “fetch” but,
he does not return the ball willingly. Rocky seems afraid that if he
shares his toys, he won’t get them back. Rocky panics if a toy, such as
his kong, slides underneath the couch. He will cry and bark until I move
the couch to get the kong for him. I’ve trued substituting the “lost”
toy for another toy, but he does not forget his “lost” toy.
Rocky is unable to climb the stairs to the upper level of my home. I’m
not sure if his weight prohibits him or if he is just unfamiliar with
stairs. Sometimes he tries, but he turns around before he reaches the
3rd step. At this point, being that it is summer, the downstairs is
cooler anyhow.
I am so happy that Rocky is a part of my home. I can’t imagine going
back to being without him. Everywhere that I go that Rocky can come, he
comes. Rocky has been to 2 street fairs already! Everything is going
great with Rocky and I’m sure that it will continue. He is a wonderful
dog and my new best friend.

5/29/05 - Rocky has been adopted.
5/16/05 - Ok, we have been holding
out on you. Rocky has been in rescue for quite some time, and you are
only now hearing about him. Just have been soo busy and have had quite a
few dogs join us here. But we did not forget him...when you see him you
understand why.
Rocky was an owner surrender to a city shelter because his mom was ill
and couldn't have him around anymore. For starters, he is definitely the
BIGGEST pug I have every seen. I estimate that he weighs 35 lbs, and as
you can see from his pics, he is not obese, he is LARGE. I call him the
great dane of pugs:o)))
Rocky has adopted a rubber hamburger that has long lost it squeaker. He
doesn’t care, he loves it and takes it with him everywhere. I can take
it out of his mouth easily; he has no issues with that. Once in a while
I am able to substitute a kong for his hamburger.
Rocky goes in his crate well, and can be a bit whiney till he settles
down. He is totally housetrained, and has not has 1 accident since the
1st day he was here.
He is living with lots of dogs here, but is not dependent on then at
all. He would do fine as an only dog, as well as being part of a home
with more then one dog. He can be a bit pushy, so we would have to see
if the dynamics of your crew would work with rocky.
He is in good health, and all ready for his new home. If you love the
pug breed, why not get an app in on this boy. Now that the secret is
out, I don’t expect Rocky to be here long :o))
