11/28/04 - Honey has been adopted

11/16/04 - It was about 4:30 pm and Mom was vacuuming the living room. She had just come to the area in front of the door when something caught her attention. She looked up and there were the sweetest brown eyes peering in at her through the screen door. Behind the eyes, was a tail wagging steadily in a silent, hopeful greeting......
We named this sweet older girl "Honey". It seemed fitting both because of her light amber coloring and her docile, loving personality. Honey was sporting a collar that day, but, unfortunately no tags. It was quite a conundrum at first, because we had our dogs plus a foster for Rescue. Having only one crate for the rescue foster, we had no choice but to give Honey the run of our living room. We certainly couldn't leave her out running around to possibly get hit by a car and one look at her muzzle told us that to take her to a shelter would be a death sentence. The older dogs are some of the first to be euthanized at a shelter because of their low adoptability. Honey did wonderfully that evening and we awoke to find her curled up on the dog bed next to the loveseat.
We placed an ad on the radio and one in the paper, walked her around our neighborhood to see if anyone recognized her and made the local shelter and ACO aware of her. Though we received a couple of calls, neither was Honey's owner. :o(
Honey checked out healthy at our vet, negative for intestinal parasites, Heart Worm and in general good health overall. The vet placed her age somewhere between 6 and 10 and guesses her to be a mix of yellow lab and possibly beagle. As you can see in the photos, Honey was obviously not underweight and had been cared for by someone at sometime.
The fact that Honey stays close to us outside, and doesn't wander off kind of shoots down the idea that she ran away. She has even been on trail hikes with us and our other dogs, off leash, and not wandered. We can only surmise that Honey has been abandoned, though we have yet to see any bad habits...... She is housetrained, doesn't chew, garbage pick, counter surf, or drink from the toilet. She rides wonderfully in the car, is very mellow, loving and calm. She will emit a protective (rather deep, surprisingly!) bark at the sound of a knock or the doorbell. She is docile around other dogs and does not want any trouble with anyone---canine or human. She LOVES attention and will cuddle right on your lap if you're inclined to let her. She's tolerant of ear cleaning, tooth brushing, coat brushing, foot wiping, nail clipping and bathing.
Some of her favorite things are nature walks, rolling in the grass, a good ear rub and cuddling by the fire.......oh, and any type of human food that she can get for a treat! LOL
Honey has been with us for a couple of months, now, as we had every intention of keeping her. However, we are a raucous, bouncing, household of 3 Boxers and, quite honestly, Honey is literally knocked down and bowled over on a daily basis. She doesn't play "Boxer" and really is the worse for wear at the end of any play sessions.
We can see Honey thriving in a different household, with or without fellow canine housemates. She gets along with every dog she's ever met with us (quite a few!) and doesn't even hold grudges against our romping bunch. I have never before met such a docile dog. She's wonderful with visitors to the house, meeting strangers at Petsmart and our local barn and extremely tolerant with children.
Honey would make a wonderful companion animal for someone that is lonely, or a pet that has recently lost it's housemate. Once you meet Honey, you can't help but fall in love with her.
