12/6/06  -Just wanted to send an update out since its been awhile.  Jack continues to do great with us.  He is playful and silly now and I can't even see his timid side anymore.  He did have his echocardiogram done by our vet because he has a heart murmur but we were thrilled to here that it is not a problem.  He does not have any symptoms at all and does not require any medication.  His heart murmur should just be kept in mind so it can be watched in the future.  Jack loves to play with my kids and run around the yard.  He also is doing well with walks.  I do have to mention that we were out on a stroll and a stray dog came up to Jack and I and started growling.  "Timid" Jack puffed himself right up and stood tall right in front of me and must have sent the other dog a message to back off because he went running.  I was impressed.  He has come a long way from cowering under my desk to protecting me.  He is really a good boy.  I have been trying to get him used to a crate since his forever family may need to put him in one.  He goes right inside and lays down.  No bucking or fighting me at all.  I have been putting him in the crate when I will be gone for more than and hour.  He is fine out of the crate for short periods thus far.  His forever family will fall fast and hard for him.  He is such a sweetie.

11/19/06 - Jack is pending adoption

11/16/06 - I've sent some new pictures to show everyone how great my Jack looks.  He is absolutely perfect now.  He is a great boxer because he is not overly exuberant like most of the breed.  He is pretty laid back and would do well in a home with elderly or young children.  He adores my daughter Kristina who is in the pictures.  You can see how tiny she is.  Jack is a gentle soul.  He does have some playful moments but he is not running all day long.  He really enjoys his walks and does not pull at all.  He does not require constant attention either.  Don't get me wrong, he loves to be by his humans but he isn't always climbing all over us.  He lies on the floor at our feet except at night when he usually persuades us to let him in our bed.  I haven't crated Jack at all and he does very well when I go out to do an errand.  He loves to chew on smoked pigs ears and this keeps him occupied.  He is not a barker at all.  Jack has come along way and he is making positive steps everyday.  The fearfullness is virtually gone and you can tell that he is a happy dog now.  Let's get Jack in his forever home soon.

11/8/06 - Jack visited the vet yesterday and did great.  He didn't even act timid which I was very impressed with.  He had his final skin scraping done and it was negative so no more yucky medicine.  He is putting on weight nicely.  Jack is playing more everyday.  He did laps around my house today which was a first.  He still likes to put the death shake on his toy skunk and then lay down with it for a nap.  Still hasn't damaged anything inside and he hasn't had an accident in the house all week.  I am so proud of the progress he is making.  He follows me all over the place.  I take him with me for rides in the car and he seems to enjoy looking out the window.  Walks are easier and he looks forward to going now.  I'm praying that someone will take this boy into their home and love him like I do.  I want his next move to be the final one.  Its time Jack learns what its like to live the good life of a loved dog.  Get those apps in.  I will get some new pictures forwarded soon.

11/4/06 - Jack is doing great.  We woke up yesterday morning to a different dog.  His little stub was wagging like crazy.  He went right outside to do his business and proceeded to play with a ball for a while.  He has been coming to my husband now for affection without bribery.  His skin is looking fantastic.  He has a vet appointment on Monday and I will let all know how he is doing.  Jack loves a good brushing.  I sat and brushed him for about 30 minutes and it must have felt good cause he fell asleep.  He has been introduced to my friends dogs and cats and really doesn't care that they are there.  He seems to be enjoying his walks more----his tail is up and he looks so proud.  He likes to snuggle like all boxers but will only come up on the furniture if he is called.  It amazes me how well he is coming along.  He really did take baby steps but has learned to trust my family.  He is really adorable and will make a nice companion for someone.  He has been crated while I was out for more than 2 hours and did well.  I also left him out of the crate while I was out and he did just as well.  He really is a good boy.  Of course he takes the occasional peak in the garbage can like my 2 dogs but he is not destructive at all.  Get those apps in.  Jack needs to be placed permanently.  He deserves a forever home and a loving, understanding family.  Sure he has a past but ----dogs move on.  Jack is a heartbreaker.

10/30/06 - Jack is finally showing me the boxer in him.  He's been playing with my 2 dogs like crazy.  I bought him a stuffed skunk and he loves to give it the death shake.  He's also been wagging that stubby tail more often.  The focused walks have been working to build trust with my husband and he is finally coming over to him looking for a nice scratchin.  Jack's been coming up near me on the couch for a little nap and some snuggle time.  I even got him to lay on his back so I could rub his polka dot belly.  This is a huge step for him.  He has had no accidents in the house and has not chewed or damaged anything.  He is great with my kids and with any other animal that comes his way.  Jack's skin is improving everyday.  He had a bath with his special shampoo and was actually falling asleep in the tub while I was rubbing it on his skin.  He loved it.  He spreads out on our bed with us at night and tries to snuggle up as close to us as possible.  IF I tell him "off" he will go and lie on the dog bed without any objections--(It does get a bit crowded sometimes with 3 of them in my bed).  Jack has a vet appointment on the 6th and I will update all on his progress.  I am just thrilled with the advances he's made in so little time.  I am determined to make him forget all about his neglectful past and make him a perfect companion and he is well on his way.  Get those apps in.  He will steal your heart with those sad eyes.

10/25/06 - Jack continues to take baby steps toward becoming a balanced dog everyday.  I have noticed that he has been spooking a lot less with loud noises.  My husband still makes him nervous and Jack will try to avoid walking near him.  My husband has begun taking him for focused walks to help build trust and the pack leader mentality.  Jack is a submissive dog and needs strong leadership to make him feel safe.  I've noticed that he is playing a little now with some of his dog toys and he will run around the yard with my female boxer.  Jack follows me around the house all the time.  He is always right under my feet.  He sleeps in the bed with us at night and seems to really enjoy it although he is quite the snorer.  I have taken Jack for a few rides in the car and he sits very well.  I try to get him out as often as I can to get him socialized more.  I know that he has been neglected in the past and he needs to build trust in humans.  I also have to mention that I came home from an appointment the other day and noticed that Jack wagged his little stubby tail.  I was thrilled.  Yesterday, I think I may have caught a bit of wiggle butt too.  He is making progress and we will continue to work with him and make him feel safe and secure.  I think he will be a great companion for anyone very soon

10/21/06 - Jack has safely arrived at his new foster home today.  First impressions of Jack are---he is a submissive, sweet boy.  He is still a bit timid from the move but I will get him out and socialized and I'm sure he will come out of his shell.  He had no problems being introduced to my 2 fur babies.  There were no fights for alpha dog.  They all just sniffed each other and began to hang out.
Jack even enjoyed a little frolicking around my yard with my female boxer.  Jack has followed me everywhere so far.  He is always right on my heels.  He was introduced to my 2 children without any problems.  Jack still has some pink, dry areas of skin from his Demadex, although is appears to be clearing up nicely.  He will continue his medication and I'm sure he will be even more beautiful than he already is.  He has the deepest brown eyes and I swear you can see his gentle soul through them.  Not an ounce of aggression or dominance behavior is noted.  I will keep everyone posted on his progress as the days go on but I encourage you to get apps in on this boy.  My heart aches for him because of his history and I really want him to have a forever home.

9/15/06 - Hello!  Jack has been home from the vet since Tuesday.  So I wanted to let you guys know how things are going.  His neuter on Monday went well.  He has been on home rest for the past 2 days.  He was very happy to be home- he would not stop wagging his tail.  He has been acting normal, just a little tired.  Today he is back to his normal self.  He is actually playing with Haley more than pre-neuter.  I heard him bark for the first time last night.  He decided to initiate play with Haley.  He has this deep, short bark.  He'd bark, Haley would run, then he'd chase her and bark again.  I heard him bark again today too!  Dan was rough-housing with Haley on the floor, and Jack started barking at him.  I'm not sure what the barking was for.  He didn't want to join in necessarily, because when we tried he ran away.  But he would come back and bark some more.  Maybe he was wanting to protect Haley?  I don't know, he wasn't mad, just barking.  It was really cute.  He just seems so happy now, his tail is always up and often wagging.
While Jack was at the vet, The vet noticed that his Left eardrum is ruptured.  The vet thinks that this will heal itself with no permanent damage.  They did a skin test on him which came back negative.  YEAH!  They explained this to me to mean that the areas they tested have no new mites and no previous mites.  They want him to continue his mange treatment until a few negative skin tests, just to be sure the mites are definitely gone before we stop treating them.  He is scheduled to go in for a re-check/skin-test in 4 weeks.  His skin infection continues to improve.  So, I think that (medically) things are going well.
Jack is doing really well at home too.  We have been letting him sleep in our bedroom- he really enjoys it and we have not had any problems.  He is turning out to be a real sweetheart, he approaches us now for affection and looks to us for approval of what he is doing.  He doesn't like being away from us when we are home.  He whines when we go upstairs and leave him downstairs.  And waits patiently at the baby gate for us to return.  He actually slept partially in my lap on the couch the other day.  We are still having some issues with housebreaking, but we are working on it and trying to figure out his schedule.  Will keep you updated on his progress.

9/7/06 - Just wanted to let everyone know how well Jack is doing.  We were on vacation last week and when we came home Saturday night, Jack looked great.  His fur is really starting to come in.  When we first picked him up in August, we thought he might be brindle, due to all the patches of hair that were missing.  But he is growing in a beautiful fawn coat with his bright white chest and paws.  He is actually starting to look younger too as the skin infection and mange are improving.  His coat is soft and shiny!  He still has a lot of fur to come in, but he is turning into an extremely handsome boy.  I will try to get some pictures and post them to show his improvement.
While we were gone, Jack also learned to climb  onto the couch, and he loves it!!  The couch is now his favorite place to nap.  He even slept with his head and paws in my lap the other day (although I did position him there, but he stayed!).  We have been letting him sleep in our room this past week too, on a new bed that we bought for him, and we haven't had any trouble.  No accidents this week in the house, only one peeing accident last week when the dog sitter was here.  His confidence continues to grow.  He is much less timid, and much more curious about everything.  We have tried letting him off of the leash in our yard while playing with Haley.  Yesterday he saw and man walking by and decided he wanted to check it out.  He came back when I approached him, but for now he is strictly an on leash dog outside.  He discovered his first frog last night.  He sniffed and sniffed and pawed at it.  Then he and Haley found one together, and they were a team trying to figure out what the frog was and what to do with it.  Jack was wagging his tail, which only happens occasionally.  They were both so funny, I couldn't help but laugh.  He is starting to respond to his name and "come"  and has quickly learned what "no" means.  He is really doing so much better and we are really enjoying seeing the boxer in him come out.
He goes in for his neuter on Monday and I will update you guys afterwards.

8/24/06 - Jack continues to improve.  He is becoming more confident in the house.  Last weekend he decided
to see what he could get away with.  He pulled trash out of the garbage and stood on the furniture to get to the remote control and blankets to chew on.  He responded to No by stopping the behavior, without running off scared.  His nervousness had basically vanished.  He is playing with Haley more and more.  All they do at night is chew on each other, play tug of war, trade chewies.  He does take little naps though, when Haley allows him to.  Only one accident in the house in the last 2 weeks.  Yeah!
He has started doing the random Boxer run around in a circle with no direction or target.  It was so nice to finally start seeing a little bit of the boxer in him coming out.  Still no sign of the wiggle butts, but I am confident that one day soon we will see it.  He is still pretty calm, not sure if it is do to his body fighting all of his conditions or if he is going to be a more laid back dog.
His fur is starting to come in in places.  His legs are now white with patches of incoming fur.  His back is now soft and silky to the touch.  His tail and the top of his head are still bare, but overall his coat is starting to return.  The skin and eye infections are getting better too.
He is getting better with my husband.  He is still scared at times.  Tuesday we were out in the yard, and Dan pulled up in the car, and Jack actually walked up to the car to greet Dan.  Big step for him.  He doesn't run/jump every time Dan approaches him, but you can tell Jack does not completely trust him yet.  He does much better with me, but I am around him more.
Overall, we are very excited about the progress Jack has been making.  He still has a long way to go, but we are very pleased with how far he has come thus far.

8/18/06 - Just wanted to give  a quick update on Jack.  He is more comfortable in the house, no accidents since last Thursday.  However, he continues to be afraid of my husband.  We would welcome any suggestions.  Any time Dan tries to approach him, he gets spooked and either jumps away (on leash) or runs circles around the furniture.  Yesterday, Dan was eating lunch outside with Jack on his leash and Haley off leash.  The dogs were playing under some bushes and Jack chewed through his leash.  When my husband approached him, he jumped away.  It took Dan quite a while to finally get his collar.  Any suggestions to get Jack comfortable with Dan would be great.  It is frustrating for Dan for Jack not to trust him.
Suggestions from Gary:  I would suggest that Dan take him on controlled, focused walks, to help build the "pack leader" mentality with Jack.  Walk with a check collar and have the collar way up near his ears, for the most effective walk.
Who knows what Jack experienced in his old home, maybe they were not very nice to Jack.   We know he was definitely neglected, who knows if he wasn't abused too.
Trust needs to be built up, so have Dan do lots of things with him. Let him feed him, walk him and I believe over time Jack will come to respect and trust Dan.

8/6/06 - Jack continues to do well.  His personality develops more everyday.  He is really beginning to play more.  He and our female romp around every night.  They share chew toys.  They both roll around on the ground and chew each other.  We have let him loose in some of our friends yards with their dogs and he does great.  He will explore a bit, but does not try to run off.  He also responded to me calling him by coming back towards me. He is getting confident enough to join in when there are multiple dogs present.  Like I said before, he especially likes the male black lab in our neighborhood.  He will join in with our dog, Haley, running and chasing the lab.  We even saw him wagging his tail today, which was a first.  He walked with a slight limp when we got him- an old injury that was probably never treated.  He is doing quite well with the leg now.  It does not seem to affect his ability to run.  He is tolerating longer walks now.  We go on a mile walk in the morning, and he has been tolerating about 2-2.5 miles at night.  I think this boy was never really exercised, so it took him a little while to build up his endurance.  Like I said before, he is great on a leash.  Never pulls, stays right behind you to the left, although he does like to stop occasionally and sniff.
He is still having a few accidents in the house.  Three Peeing accidents in the past week only.
He does seem to be learning to pee as soon as we take him outside.  He still does fine in the crate.
The nervousness is much better as well.  He is completely comfortable in the downstairs of our house.  We spend most of our time there and baby gate the upstairs off.  He is still curious when he is upstairs and somewhat nervous- mainly on guard to make sure he is not doing anything wrong.  He seems very comfortable with us.  He is more comfortable with me than my husband, but I think that is because I am around him more.  He is approaching us for head scratches occasionally.  But does enjoy receiving the attention whenever we give it.
He is still being treated for the skin infection, mange, and eye infection.  The skin infection is looking much better.  The skin on his neck is white now (versus pink) and his feet have improved to a pale pink.  We think some of his hair is growing back in, though it is hard to tell when we see him everyday.
All of our neighbors that meet him say how handsome he is, and the one's that know him continue to comment on how much better he looks every time they see him.
So, as you can read, Jack is doing really well.  We continue to watch him improve everyday and we will continue to keep you posted.

8/2/06 - My husband took Jack to the vet today, so I wanted to update everyone following this boy's journey.  The vet heard a heart murmur today, not sure how serious it is.  Jack received his Rabies and Distemper vaccinations today, so he is up to date.  The vet thinks that Jack is older than originally predicted; he puts him at 4-5 years old.  Jack is scheduled for his neuter- the first week of September.  The vet thinks he is doing well and progressing as planned with the mange.  He also said that his feet and his eyes are looking much better. Also, We have some better pictures of Jack that we will post as soon as we figure out how.

7/31/06 - Just wanted to give everyone an update on Jack.  He continues to improve every day.  He is starting to walk through doors much better.  All he needs is a gentle pull on his leash and he will walk through.  He continues to walk well on the leash.  He noticed a squirrel for the first time the other day- he seemed very interested, until it ran up the tree and he lost sight of it.
He is beginning to approach us for affection.  He doesn't do this often, but it is a good start.  He will walk up to us, usually when we are sitting, and allow some scratching all over his head and body.
He met another dog this weekend, a Sheltie, and again there were no problems.  He shares toys and chewies very well.  Our dog, Haley, is always more interested in what he is chewing on, so they trade quite often.  The two of them are beginning to play a little more.  He will box with her a few times a day for short periods of time.
He is coming along on his house training too.  Only one accident this past week, which I suspect is marking, rather than peeing.  He is starting to pee immediately when we take him outside.
He nervousness has improved tremendously.  I would characterize him now as shy, rather than nervous.  He still spooks a bit when he hears loud or unfamiliar noises, but other than that he is much more relaxed.  We go back to the Vet on Wednesday, I'll update again afterwards.

7/25/06 Jack is the male boxer that was rescued from the neglected home in Binghamton.  He has been with us for a little over a week now.  When he came to us he was extremely nervous and shy.  Every day we have noticed progress with him.  He is beginning to come out of his shell a little bit.  He played with our one year old female boxer today, chewing on her and romping with her on the floor.  We also introduced him to one of our friend's dogs, a male lab, that he was very interested in.  He is still mainly observing what goes on in our house, building his trust.  He does well in his crate during the day.  He also goes into his crate whenever he gets nervous or scared.  He still jumps at loud noises and unexpected moves.  He is slowly starting to approach us, and seems to enjoy a little affection.
He currently has demodectic mange, a skin infection, and an eye infection, all of which he is taking medication for.  It really breaks our hearts that someone could let this boy get into this kind of shape.  He is really handsome, despite the mange, and is going to be beautiful once his hair grows back in.  He takes his medications well.  His eyes look much better than they did when we first got him.
He is having accidents in the house here and there, but not often.  He walks really well on the leash and seems to really enjoy the walks.  His tail is always in the "up" position.  Will keep you updated on his progress.
