10/18/03 - Reggie, dear Reggie, we will never understand how you could be so wonderful in your foster home, and them have some difficulties when we tried to place you in your forever home. I worked with Reggie so much to help him move on to a home of his own. He was just one of the best fosters here, and moved very deeply into my heart. Unfortunately, the times that your behavior was a bit unpredicable when you went to your forever home made this decision very difficult. Reggie, I wish things could have been different for you, as i could not have loved you any more then I did. I will never understand what went on in your head, but you must have had some troubles you could not get past. For that i am terribly sorry, but you are at rest now, and at peace. I will always love you, my sweet Reggie boy.

9/15/03 - Wow, the time has flown, and we need to tell you how Reggie is doing. In a word....WONDERFUL!!!! We got Reggie back on a regiment and schedule, and he has gotten quite used to it. This boy does very well with a schedule and letting him know what your expectations are. We let Reggie out to do his business at 6am, and after he does his business, i show him a treat, and he goes right in the crate without anything being said by me. He just knows. He goes back to sleep until about 11ish, when foster mommy lets him out for a late breakfast. He stays out of his crate till bed time, which is around midnight. He gets his dinner at around 7pm every day. During the day, he is either outside with all the other dogs (all 7 of them) or hanging out downstairs. Reggie continues to be very submissive to the whole gang. He takes any opportunity to lick the jowls of the boxers in the house, which is a submissive activity.
He has gotten very comfortable in the house. He now takes the rope toys and tosses them, takes stuffed animals and gentle chews on them, and also tosses them. It has taken him a long time to get to this point, but he is really starting to shine, and has definitely found a spot in my heart. I really love this guy!!
We have gone on walks, and he is just super. He does not pull on the leash at all, and whenever we encounter others on our walk, he ignores them. When he is in the yard, and he hears people on the other side of the fence, he usually starts barking. But all it takes is a "Reggie, knock it off", and he stops, immediately. When I call him to come in the house, he responds immediately. This boy is very obedient, but you do need to teach him early that you are the boss. Once that is settled, he excels.
We had admittedly taken our time with Reggie, as I was very disappointed that his 1st home did not work out, and I want to make sure we learn as much about him as possible, so that his new family will be the beneficiary of everything we have learned. He at times seems to have some mannerisms that make him appear slightly skittish, but I am not totally sure that that is what is going on.
He does give some kisses, but he is certainly not a big kisser by any stretch of the imagination. He does not go on the furniture, and has had no accidents in the house. When I come down to visit him, he now does a kidney bean dance, and starts a playful boxer swiping his paw at me. Like I said, I love this guy, but my home is totally full. Is yours, if not, ask for this boy, he really will be a wonderful addition to your home.

8/18/03 - Reggie has been back with his foster family for 2 weeks now. We have taken Reggie for some professional evaluation, to try to determine why he did not "match" with his adopting family. The behavioralist has some interesting observations on Reggie. One thing he noticed was that upon meeting Reggie for the 1st time, Reggie avoided making eye contact, and even avoided physical contact with him. For a boxer he felt that this is strange. He feels that Reggie has not had lots of socialization. Reggie was absolutely fine with him, no problems at all, but preferred to keep his distance. He also made another interesting observation. Although Reggie knows "sit", "stay", "paw" and "down", he was not very attentive to Bob when Bob gave him those commands. They were not "crisply" followed, as you would expect them to be. He suggested that Reggie definitely attend obedience training again. I found all of this to be very interesting observations. We now feel that Reggie was given much to much freedom in a very short period of time in his new home. Back at my home, he is now back to being crated during parts of the day, and has had no issues with it. He is not allowed to greet people at the door, as he has had a tendency to be a bit protective in that situation. He needs to be brought along slowly, as we suggest with all of our dogs.
He is doing fine with the dogs in the home, although he does tend to keep to himself when outside. He does not actively seek out the dogs outside, but while inside, he has started playing very nicely with Beasly, our 1 yr old foster pug. So i must agree, Reggie will continue to get more socialization to help him overcome his timid ness.
He continues to be a pleasure in our home. He is very well behaved, and deserves a forever home of his own. Are you ready to provide a stable, loving environment that has some basic rules for this super boy? If you are, this boy will be quite the prize. Come and get him.

8/3/03 -Unfortunately Reggie was not a match for the family that adopted him and has been returned to rescue to find his forever home.

7/20/03 - Reggie has been adopted.

7/19/03 - Reggie is Pending Adoption

7/6/03 - Reggie had a very nice day today, and I have learned more about this very even tempered guy. Reggie did his 1st home visit, and he was just super. We went out east to do a home visit for a soon to be adopting lady, and Reggie was on his best behavior. For starters, he was wonderful during the 1/2 hr drive, settling down nicely in the car. When we arrived, he walked into the home, and sniffed around. I noticed there was a paraket in the home, so I brought it to Reggie's attention, he looked at it for a brief moment, and then went on to his business of exploring. During our home visit, i talked a lot about training and it's importance, and demonstrated a bunch of things with Reggie. He did everything that I asked him to. He settled down quickly in the home as I spoke to the owner. She was very impressed with him, and I was very proud of his behavior.

After the home visit, as since I was out east, I went to visit a friend who had just had hip replacement surgery. Of course, Reggie went with me. When we arrived, we went out into the yard and waited for my friend to come out. She was a bit nervous, as she has 2 labs, and didn't know how they would be with Reggie. I told her to relax, we'll put leashes on all the dogs, and see how they would do. And just as i expected, when the 2 labs (both females) came out, they all got along like lifelong friends. My friend, who is a lab person, really was taken with Reggie. She kept saying "wow, what a nice boy he is. Who would let a dog like this go?" She offered to keep Reggie with her until he found a home, but I couldn't let my Reggie guy do that. Reggie also met her uncle and aunt who came all the way from England to help her during her recouperation, and he was fine with all of them.
We stayed a bit over 1 hour, and when we were leaving, there were several cats outside the gate. (The next door neighbor is called the "cat lady", and there are quite a few cats around my friends property). I took Reggie over to see one of the cats lounging in the stoop, and he went to sniff it, nose to nose. The cat didn't care for the closeness, and decided to get up and find another spot. Reggie showed some interest, but there was nothing that indicated he wanted to hurt the cat. Then, when we walked to the car, there was another cat laying by the tire. Again, Reggie looked at it, and when this cat made a fast move to get out of our way, Reggie followed it and wanted to chase it, but not in a threatening way. I think this guy will be fine in a home with cats. He might chase them if they run (most dogs will initially), but i have no doubt he will not hurt them, and that when corrected, he will stop doing this, and live nicely with them.
Reggie's cough is getting a little bit better, but is still there. I am sure it will be gone by the weekend, as i am afraid so will Reggie. This is a very nice dog, who will do very will in lots of situations. Whether as an only dog, or in a multiple dog home, Reggie will adapt. He is not high activity, but if you want to pick up the pace, he will happily accomodate you. He will do fine with younger children, as he does not jump or get wild. Like i said, just a great dog, both in looks and in temperment. Can you see this guy in your home?

7/3/03 - Reggie is having a wonderful stay at the Haven. He has learned his manners around Miss Shotzie girl, and now he is allowed to "hang" with her. She has even played with him a bit, although with Shotzie, it is ALWAYS her rules and her game. Reggie has learned this, and is doing fine.
Reggie has not had one accident in the house, and is totally trustworthy. He does not get crated during the day at all, although I do crate him at night, because Teddy the bratty Shih Tzu foster has not been crated, and I don't want him to bother Reggie, so it is safer for Reggie to be in his crate. He doesn't mind one bit, goes in with a slight nudge, and settles down immediately.

Reggie and I went for a walk tonight, just he and I, and it was a very nice walk. As I said before, someone who had Reggie before put some work into this guy. He walked like a real pro. Healed, sat, stayed, kept pace with me, whatever I did, he picked up on it quickly. When I started walking briskly, he stayed by my side, Then, I slowed it down to a crawl, and he stayed by my side. Yup, I was very impressed with him. It was a quiet night on long island, and we didn't bump into anyone during our walk, which I really wanted to to see how he would do. Oh well, guess that's what you get at 10pm on a Thursday night on long island :o)))
Reggie appears to have kennel cough, so we have started him on antibiotics. His appetite is still very good, although he has been leaving a bit over, so we started cutting back his portions a bit. He has gotten spaghetti with his dinner, and he LOVES that. He will eat all the pasta, and then start looking at the other bowls to see if he can steal theirs, but I keep an eye on that and tell him "Reggie, go eat your food". He understands, and goes back to his bowl.
As you can probably tell, I am very pleased with my foster boy Reggie. And believe me, you are gonna love this guy!

6/29/03 - We have a new guy visiting us at the Wings and Halo Haven, and as you can see, he is a very regal looking young guy. We have named him Reginald, and are calling him Reggie for short. A great big thank you once again to Rebecca, who went to our favorite shelter on a Sunday, when dogs are not usually released, and picked up Reggie and met me so he would not have to spend any more time there. Thanks again Rebecca, and Reggie says so too!!

Reggie was great on the ride home, just hung out in the back seat. I had an almost instant feeling about this guy, and decided to let him meet my guys (and there are quite a few of them :o)). Of course, with leashes, he met big Chancy man, my 105 lb sweet and mellow boxer boy. No problems, although having been recently neutered, Reg did try to hump the big guy. Chance quickly turned the tables, and started humping Reggie. Neither really had any issues. He then met my anything but sweet dominatrix girl Shotzie. She has actually improved immensely when she meets new dogs, and now tries to get them to play chase with her. She is a bit on the rough side when she plays, and Reggie really didn't know what to make of her growling and barking in his face. He was backing way from her. When she got tired of trying to get him to play, she turned her back on him. Well, Reggie took this as an opportunity to try humping her......BIG MISTAKE :o))). She NEVER puts up with that, and quickly turned on him and got right in his face. Well, Reggie wanted no part of that, and got involved in other stuff. He didn't totally learn his lesson, and tried a few other times, all with the same results. Nothing serious, just lots of scary noise. Reggie then met my other boxer boy Rocky, and then my 9 yr old pug, and a few other fosters hanging out at the Haven, a 5 yr old pug female and 6 yr old Shih Tzu. Within a few hours here, Reggie was co-existing with all of these guys, and hung outside as it was a totally beautiful day here on Long Island. He hasn't met our Shar Pei yet, as she is usually very shy and not really tolerant of new fosters, and the last to meet the fosters. I don't anticipate any problems when we do the intro's in a few days.

Reggie ate beautifully, had 2 1/2 cups of food mixed with vanilla yogurt when he arrived, and 3 cups at 7pm. He is a bit on the thin side, and could use about 10 lbs or so. We'll begin working on that. Reggie also impressed me with what he already knows. Someone has worked with this boy, for sure. He immediately sits on command and give paw happily. He also does an excellent "down", so yes,I am very impressed. He goes in his crate with just a nudge, and is quiet once in there. So, a very busy 1st day for Reggie, stay tuned for further updates on this very regal guy.
