PerfectHome: A perfect home for Sara would be a home where someone is there most of the day. Sara NEEDS to be the only dog or with a very submissive dog(s).,A home with NO cats would be best.

2/2/12 - Sara has no major medical problems other than those caused by her age. She has been to the vet - her kennel cough is all better, she is heartworm negative, her fecal is negative and her blood tests were all in the normal range. The vet did not think X-rays of her jaw and hips/legs were really needed because - at Sara's age - not a lot could be done. She is getting an antibiotic for her teeth and gums and Rimadyl for her arthritic back legs. Sara does not have any problem eating - although she is a little messy about it. She loves her treats and gets very excited about them. However, I have found it safer to drop them into her mouth. Her aim is a bit off so she is likely to get fingers as well as the treat if I am holding it., She is a wonderful sweet girl. Her favorite activities are sleeping and eating. She has spurts of energy and playfulness but overall is a very low energy dog. She loves attention and petting but most of all she loves to be with her people. Long walks, climbing onto a bed, couch or lap, climbing up or down stairs, slippery floors - are difficult for Sara because of her back legs. She has some separation distress if she can't see someone or is confined to a crate. She is not destructive but does a lot of barking and panting. I have not been crating her and she has been better about this. Unfortunately, she is still having occasional bathroom accidents in the house. She is much better than when she first arrived, when she was having 2 or 3 accidents a day. We have learned each other schedules and signals so now it only happens a couple times a week and is easily cleaned up with my Spot-Lifter. Have to give her some lee-way - She is an older gal after all. She can usually wait about 6 hours - at night or if no one is home - before needing to go outside. During the day I try to get her outside every 3 or 4 hours. For these reasons, I would recommend a forever home where someone is home most of the time. At her age Sara does not need a lot of stress., Sara is proving to be a very feisty older lady at times. She doesn't play a lot with toys and is quite unsteady on her feet but she has NO problem chasing after my cats. She can be a little unpredictable when she is overly excited, so I do not trust her with my cats. A home with NO cats would be best for Sara. Also a home with very submissive dog(s) or where Sara could be an only dog would also be best. Sara will NOT back down when my boxer, Star, attacks her. Sara NEVER starts the fight - it is always Star. They a wonderful together 99% of the time but Star has a few resource guarding issues and will attack Sara (mostly noise, power, snaps and nips) and Sara just defends herself. We try to keep Star's prized items out of site and step in to keep the fight from escalating into anything more serious. Sara, however, has a difficult time giving up and calming down afterwards. This is not a good situation for Sara. ,I am also concerned about having young children around when the fights happen., Sara is wonderful with my young grandchildren, ages 5, 2 and 6 months. She does not try to jump on them. However, I try to closely supervise the kids when they are with any of my foster boxers., Sara is an older lady with several problems that come with her age. She does the best she can. She doesn't like being attacked and will defend herself. The best solution is to not put her in that situation. She still remains a super sweet, calm, cute lovebug. She may not have many years left but each one will be precious - filled with devotion and love. You will never regret having Sara in your lives. 12/21/11 -Thank you Boxer Angels Rescue for rescuing Sara,, 'm so glad I get to be her foster mom!,
This poem reminds why seniors are so GREAT!!!,

One by one, they pass my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past her time, she can't run and play.
They shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old woman, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore,
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
Those younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond the cage,
You took me home, gave me food and a bed.
And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To You, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the angel who made my last days so dear.

12/19/11 - Sara arrived about 2 weeks ago from a shelter in Maryland with a very bad case of kennel cough. She is feeling much better now and is one of the sweetest boxer girls ever. Her first week here, we had 6" of snow. My husband took her outside in it and when they returned - he said that Sara had decided she wanted to go back to Maryland. Fortunately she has gotten used to the snow and cold and is very happy here. Sara has some weakness in her back legs that makes it difficult for her to sit and go down stairs. She will sit - sort of - for a treat. If she actually gets her bottom on the floor, her back legs are so splayed out she can't stand up. So we settle for an "all most" sit. She does love her treats. We are feeding her soft treats and soft food because her teeth and jaw are misaligned. We are waiting to get Sara settled in here before we get these medical problems evaluated. Sara is a very low energy girl and is content to curl up and sleep most of the day - as long as she can be near you. She is not a big fan of the crate and will bark for a while if she can't see anyone. However, if I stay near the crate until she settles down, she will lay down and go to sleep. Then she is fine. Sara is not ready for adoption just yet. But if you are looking for a cute, calm, low energy, patient, sweet senior boxer, then keep Sara on your list.
