TRANSPORTERS TESTIMONIALS
You can help BAR by volunteering to transport Boxers to their Foster Homes. Every weekend, BAR volunteers drive countless miles to get scared shelter dogs and confused owner surrenders to their waiting foster homes. Without our transporters we could not provide the kind of foster care that we are so well known for. Please consider giving just a few hours every once in a while when you see a transport posted in your geographical area. We're sure that you will find it a VERY REWARDING experience.
WARNING: Transporting Boxers can be Habit Forming!!
Following are some comments from our wonderful transporters that you will enjoy reading.
From Kristi 9/13/03:
Today was my first-ever transport. I do a lot of phone interviews and
letter/article-writing and some home visits, but today I was
venturing into new territory on two fronts -- transporting and visting
Middletown, NY for the first time all in the same day!
I was pretty worried about three things...the weather (stupid Hurricane
Isabelle), my car (an 11-year-young, 122,000 mile-er), and
the traffic on the Cross Bronx Expressway.
I think some of our friends at the Rainbow Bridge were with me today, because I
made it to Bayside in 29 minutes (it should have taken at least 45), my car did
just fine, and the weather held out.
And I got the pleasure of bringing 'shelter girl' to the next leg of her
journey. What a sweetie! Skinny as anything, with the saddest
look on her adorable face, but I'm sure Mary will fix that right up!
Four hours and 160 miles later, I'm hooked. If there are any new members of the
group who haven't yet transported, please try it --
it's very rewarding.
And like Michele said, what else would you be doing? All those fun and
ever-so-rewarding household chores will still be waiting when you get home
(Michele -- I'm paraphrasing!).

I have to tell you all my
experience doing my first transport today was great and almost strange. I
had mentioned how I wanted to do this with my Dad in mind. Well my brother
decided to come with me as he knew I was nervous going it alone the first time.
On the way home we decided to stop in Bayside, Queens where we lived before
moving out on the island and where my mom met and married my dad (who was not my
bio dad). So going there we go past this area that has a pond and it was
so strange like an instant flashback in my head. There was this place when
I was younger that my dad took me to a couple of times. As young as I was
I still remember what we spoke about the two times we were there, but I could
never remember where the place was but I could totally envision it in my mind.
As weird as this sounds part of one of the conversations was him teaching me
about water rats!! LOL, that was my dad for ya. Over the years
I recalled the outings there but had no idea where it was. When I drove
past this pond I realized this was the spot that was a blank to me for so long!
It was so strange and yet comforting cause I finally now knew where this was
that we had some step-father/daughter : ) talks. Then we go to the actual
area where our apartments were and we're driving around looking at everything
and then I pull up into the back where the parking lot is and just happened to
stop to take one last look at everything in the back and my brother says to me,
Debbie do you realize you just stopped at the exact parking spot that Dad used
to park his old Falcon?? I had no idea, but he remembered the number of
the spot and the location. Then some of you might know my first encounter
with a boxer was in Queens when my girlfriend and I used to walk this huge
beauty of a boxer (back in the days when they were taller - or maybe just seemed
so tall cause I was so little) for this elderly woman in our building. I
remember begging her to keep her dog, lol!!! So I'm driving and took
a different road out of the neighborhood and and I stop and straight ahead is
the exact spot we used to enter the woods to walk this boxer! At first I'm
thinking why am I so drawn to looking at that spot and then I remembered.
The trees were so much bigger now, but it was the spot and I could tell.
This might all sound crazy to you, but I had a great trip down memory lane today
and I swear we weren't alone. I also have to say, not sure how great I'll
be at transporting cause honestly I just wanted to cancel the rest of the legs
and bring him home!
From Michele 6/15/03:
Well
my husband Doug joined me on the transport yesterday. And let me
tell you it was GREAT!!! Tyson was such a doll!! There is just no
other way to describe him!!!! We really enjoyed the time we spent on
the transport!! If you haven't done one yet -- do it!! You'll feel
great! Besides what else would you be doing? Laundry,
housework, yard work, chores???? That'll all still be there waiting
for you to get it done eventually. And you can't beat the great
feeling you get knowing you helped a Boxer in need! And it was great
having the opportunity to meet fellow volunteers! We're looking
forward to having the opportunity to help out again!!
From Andy & Susan 6/15/03:
This was our
first transport and it was so exciting and fun to do! He was a GREAT
dog and he will make someone or some family very happy. What a
LOVE!! I felt so bad because I could see and actually feel his sadness, so
halfway to his next drop off I sat in back with him, gave him scratches
and love. He was such a happy boy when we met up with Nancy!
We look forward to doing this as often as we can. Thank you for the
opportunity and the GREAT feeling it gives you!
